Double steps for DIY sticks are here!

Original test stick he used a Grade8 2” long bolt to get thru step-stick-stand-off

LW stock bolt is 1/4”-20 x ??Length

Someone else said they needed a shorter than stock length bolt but not sure if he meant for middle step without a standoff or top step with standoff

I used 1/4” - 2” bolt and it worked fine

Testing done! I grabbed some scrap 1" aluminum tube, drilled the steps out to 5/16" so I could use my XOP brackets, and threw my first climbing stick together. Took it out back and mounted it up on an oak at ground level. Rock solid with the amsteel and DIY versa button. I bounced as much as I could on both feet and alternating single feet. Bounced on top step, bottom step, and everything is rock solid. I guarantee these steps will support 5# without a problem. Beyond that, use at your own risk. :)

Again, I'm 225# and I gave it as much stress as I could. Under normal use I'd expect someone much heavier than me could use these without any issues.
Asking for another build. I was thinking the XOP brackets fit a 1.25" but they worked on a 1" ?

$10 is a really good price. I made a set of 8 for a guy at $10/ea way back in the beginning and said never again lol. Wasn't worth my time. Looked into getting them made but the insurance cost was a non-starter for me.

Just read this subject now;
What kind of price were you quoted for ?

XOP makes two brackets. One is 1” and is a v-bracket for sticks. It gets the sticks out farther from the tree for climbing. The other is 1.25” and is used by us for our platforms.

Is it the six point bracket that fits the DIY platform?

These steps are great. but have a silly question. What bolt size did you have to switch to. The bolt threads on my lw's are too short to tighten down have to replace them.

I moded my LW by cutting them down and swapping the steps out. I did not have the problem you are speaking of. Are you talking about the middle step bolt? The top and bottom step bolts on mine were long enough, however over the years several of them were bent (not sure how or when, must be wear and tare?), so I replaced them with grade 8 hardware of the same size/length, I don't remember what they were though... Hope that helps..

I didn't even get that far. My plan was to price insurance then see how many I'd need to order from various vendors to get down to $6 or $7 a piece to sell for $10. But the insurance was going to be in the thousands of dollars so I didn't bother. Being able to get them for $10ea at 100 steps is a steal though. I know that.

yes that did the trick as cass via mentioned -- 1/4” - 2” bolt

They work great on the Lone Wolfs. Thanks again.

Have you tried stacking the sticks with these steps installed? Did you use the same bolts? I’m guessing they’ll stack the same way form what I can see. I like that.

They stacked the same for me. The original bolts were long enough to work on mine, but I replaced them with grade 8's because I had a few originals that were bent.

@DanO, I just PM’d you with a request for purchase. I am looking to purchase a set of 8.

Thanks!

Replied.

I'd like to see more pics of all the DIY sticks out there. Post 'em up! I sold someone my extras since my season doesn't start for a few more weeks so I don't have anything to post yet.

Is the general idea to mount the step with the same bolt that is on the standoff?

I plan on making some steps that are around 23" step to step and want to make sure that's fine before I do it.

FWIW, I'm using some 1/8" 6061 1" tubing and LW standoffs.

Not recessed - I put a nylon washer behind them and the washer curled up when I tightened them down.
5/16"-18 x 2" Grade 8 for steps/standoffs
1/4"-20 x 1 3/4" Grade 8 for diy versa button
