Has anyone heard of anybody getting into trouble, riding a 1000 watt bike on game lands / parks / national forest etc.? I want to purchase an ebike with a mid drive (not the hub drive), but I can't find a 750 Watt mid drive in stock. It seems like the bike manufacturers are moving to 1000 watt hunting bikes.

New regs are coming to NF lands on EBikes. Basically motorized vehicles regardless of wattage. You will have to abide by the MVUM of the particular District/Forest you are visiting. Learn the numerical values pertaining to maintenance level of each NF road.

Are hub drives really that inferior to mid drives? I’m just starting to research e bikes.

I have talked with Quietkat and M2S, and they both say that if you are going to be pulling a deer cart, or going up hills that the mid drive is the way to go. It has virtually twice the torque.

Seems like you’re going to eventually jump through hoops to get them legal to take on state lands. Hopefully they realize the benefit of the E-bike and not make them something so hard to follow regulations they become pain staking.

@mtsrunner I have a mid drive and my brother a hub drive. Riding up a long but not steep hill I didn’t break a sweat while he was gassed at the end. He is looking at getting a mid drive.

Not legal on State Game Lands in PA (not sure where you are but as far as I know we're the only state that uses that specific term so I'm going to assume here).

DCNR land they can be used on approved bike trails and I believe they are capped at 750 watts.

As far as getting in trouble, how many wardens/rangers do you see? I know motor vehicle tickets are usually in the top 2-3 in quantity of tickets issued every year. I'm no Karen Tattle Tale but blatnant disregard of vehicle regs is one of the handful of things that whizzes me off enough to give the warden a call. I haven't seen anyone abusing ebikes yet but I've called in several dirtbike and atv dbags over the years.

At LBL in KY. & TN. they are illegal on any road that is off limits to your truck.
Only roads on the official road map are OK to drive your truck or e bike on.

There are 750 mid drives available. I don't know your price range but Bakcou ebikes can be switched from a 750 to a 1000 watt on there display. Check out Rambo's Nomad 750 watt bike on Sportman Guide. Here in PA we can not use ebikes on state game lands.

Thanks, guys. My main reason for wanting an e-bike is for land that I can hunt in Kentucky. We have a 560 acre paper company lease with really tight trails and a 1200 acre cattle farm that is vast. I shouldn’t have any issues with regulations. I do occasionally hunt national forest land in my home state of NC, so I will have to check out the regs there. It seems like a mid-drive 750 with a removable throttle (class 1 at that point ) would be a safe way to go.

I just spent several weeks on the Pisgah assisting after Tropical Storm Fred. Definitely regs coming for eBikes there. NC is actually where I heard about the new regs. Get on the official website of the Pisgah, Natahala, Uwarrie, or Croatan and download the maps onto a free app called Avenza. Anyone visiting a NF should def use Avenza in any state.

Not sure if you have heard of them or not (not a mid-drive though), but you might check out the Himiway All-Terrain cruiser. My buddy has had one for a couple years now and has put it through the ringer. I bought one this year and have been very impressed. It’s not marketed for hunting so it’s reasonably priced. To my door, I paid $1,600. I’ve added a Rambo Saddle bag, a Montana Scabbard, and a deer trailer to it since.

Thanks for your help. The folks in Haywood County really got crushed with all that water. It was terrible.
I will check out the regs.

Thanks. I got on the M2S site last night and realized that their headquarters are less than 5 miles from my house. I will definitely be paying them a visit soon. Their reviews are really good and it seems like you get a lot of great components for less $$!than other companies.

Apex 7. The only mid drives that I see available are the bafang ultra motors. That is what Bakcou uses. They are a 1000 Watts bike. You can change the modes from eco (750w) to sport (1000w), but they are still a 1000 Watt motor, and I believe would be illegal.

I can get this for $700, I'm a little hesitant because it has 500 miles already on it.
Does anyone know the life expectation of the motor/batteries?
Think it's a good deal or should I keep looking?
TIA

I did fairly extensive research on ebikes the last few years and bought the M2S Ultra HT, with the Bafang 1000watt motor. I didn’t really want to spend $3200, but it was far less than comparable offerings from Bakcou, Rambo and QuietKat. Some of those were over $5,500. I’m sure those bikes are awesome and would own one, but this is my first ebike and I thought I would give M2S a try. Getting one is another matter. Ebikes are having supply chain issues too, which is affecting price and availability. I was lucky to get mine when I did this year.
I have to say I am not disappointed with the power and couldn’t imagine settling for less motor. The hub mount motors are okay for flat terrain, but this 1000watt mid mount is a beast. We have a lot of hills in KY and if this thing couldn’t climb any hills, then I didn’t want it. I’ve taken it off road twice to set cameras and it climbs almost anything. I haven’t come close to full range mileage yet as I haven’t gotten it below 75% on any trip.

I’m pretty amazed and pleased with the purchase. I have added fenders, rear carrier and cargo bags. If you have a long walk across crop fields on logging roads or access roads, these ebikes are pretty amazing. As for legal road usage, I’m not concerned or even worrying about it at this point. Most farms I hunt are private. I do drive it on the road and on the sidewalk often and haven’t had any issues. I’m not sure how authorities could even tell it is 1000 watts without going into the configuration. And when Im using pedal assist, I’m not sure they can even tell it’s being used as an ebike.

Some key components to look for:
Bafang 1000/ watt motor 160Newton
Battery AH (mine is 48v 19.2ah)
Torque and cadence sensors
Fat tires: Maxis or Kendra
Frame: 6061 aluminum
Hydraulic Disk brakes
Shimano gear sets and derailers
Shocks: front a must, rear is nice or at least a seat post with shock absorbtion
Many other accessories can be added

Just like saddle hunting, there are too many choices!

I got my M2S Ultra HT a couple of days ago. M2S has been great to deal with (quick responses, both phone and email). I was missing two bolts for my rear rack and they sent them out the next day. I have only ridden it about 4 miles (2 highway and two off rd). So far so good. I put Mr. Tuffy liners in my tires and recommend them to anyone going off rd with their bikes. Briers will give a fat tire a flat without the liners.
