Figure of 8 progress capture???

phatkaw, In your video you are using the rubber washer on your rappel line. Doesn't that prevent you from pulling the rappel rope down once you are on the ground?

Nope, it'll pull through on its own.
When I first started using them I stuffed them through my delta link or quick links but after a little while I realized that I didn't need to. A lot of times it actually helps to leave it 'outside' the link because it takes a little bit of a tug to get it through, but then when it 'pops' it sends the link towards you with some extra momentum...
When you do go get some, get a handful because they do wear out after a bazillion times of being ripped down outta trees...

Thanks, I didnt think about it pulling through the delta link.

Ok, yesterday I really put my method to the test...
I just got another new to me saddle in the mail. (Lattitude Method) I did some searching and found out what knot they use for the buckless model and watched a couple videos on tying a Blake’s Hitch. So, with my 'new' saddle and some climbing & rappelling gear swiped from some of my saddle pouches hanging on the wall i take off for the woods...
A good ways from the house i find a decent tree in a good spot to climb. "$h|t" I didn't grab a tether!!!
Now what??? I know, ill try climbing with my Figure Eight and 'my hands free rappelling method'.
It worked just fine.
I was very adamant about makeing sure that both of my wraps stayed around the 8 while advancing my rope up the tree! I did have to keep a close watch because with my rope still stuffed in my 'Step Satchel' it didn't have the weight pulling down on the tag end like it does starting high in the tree and dropping the rope does... (I hope that makes sense)

Anyways, I am not recommending trying this. I just wanted to let yins know it worked...

The hardest thing for me is that if there's an emergency to completely let go of everything. You have to trust your safety to stop you. If you do what comes naturally and start grabbing at things, you'll either get a glove/finger sucked into some place it shouldn't be or you'll grab and defeat the very thing saving you.

^^^This is so important to think about. If you start descending more rapidly than expected, your innate reaction is to grab and squeeze. This will absolutely defeat your backup hitch and you could hit the ground before you know it.

I have changed my rappel method such that I now:

1: move my backup hitch (Klemheist) down about 18” while not touching the handle on my Safeguard.

2: take my hand off of the Klemheist

3: open the handle on Safeguard and rappel until the Klemheist starts to catch

Repeat steps 1-3 to the ground. It takes about 30 seconds longer than a ‘normal’ rappel and doesn’t have the fun factor, but I feel absolutely safe doing this. I got too cavalier last year and had a free fall. Not doing that again.

I tried this also. Take the second wrap and flip the tag end under the loop like you would a rope on a boat cleat. I totally agree with you that it works, but not sure I'm going to use it at heights yet.

@mtsrunner - what are you using for Klemheist, rope or webbing (like a sling type).
- and can you post a pick, not visualizing the 18" down.

Here is my setup.
First pic is with the Beal Jammy Klemheist slid down to allow me to open the Safeguard and rappel.

Second pic is when Klemheist has started to catch. At this point, I release the lever on the Safeguard, take my left hand completely off of the lever and slide the Klemheist back down the rope with my right hand.

The Klemheist will lock up before it gets too close to the Safeguard, so I’m not worried about it getting caught and leaving me stuck.

I have been trying this out in the backyard today. My rope is Teufelberger 8mm, with Grivel Figure 8.
This rope doesn’t want to slide with the single soft lock? I ended up just using the 8 like a typical rappel.
Anyone else is experiencing this?

That's due to the design of the Grivel! I know this because I have one.
Get yerself a normal Figure 8.
I'll get you a picture of where I keep my Grivel...

Are you asking that question ^^^ to the guy promoting his Mad Rock on this thread ?

If he is, I’m wouldn’t say I’m ‘promoting’ the MadRock. It’s just what I do. Anyway, my Klemheist autoblock would stop me, but I wait until the Klemheist starts to get tight and then I let the lever of the MadRock down. So, the MadRock stops me and the Klemheist is a backup to the MadRock.
This is against the advise of the manufacturer. Proceed at your own risk.
