My Grivel arrived today and did a quick 25' climb and rappel.

Holy hell that is the most god awful device I've ever used. Rappelling down 11mm static using a stamped steel rack is smoother than that thing. Half way down, I even reset my platform so I could switch from the convex to concave side and it was no better. I even stopped to see what the issue was and is appears the raised edged around where they drilled the cooling holes is grabbing the rope as opposed to smoothly letting it slide through.

Next time you're running the Grivel Figure 8 try holding your right hand straight out to the right of it and let your your rope feed from out there. Not from below.
That's just about the only way to come down smoothly with that thing...

I've got an REI close by so I'll be getting a straight-8. Also getting annoyed with my ropeman1x2carabiner setup and may break down and get a Petzl.

We gotta get DanO to stock another option!

I did try that but I also run a klemheist low for my lock-off so that doesn't really work.

Made it to REI today, got a straight-8 and it worked exactly like it should. No hanging, jumping or anything else so like I said, exactly like I expected it should and very smooth.

I also had a moment of weakness and bought a Petzl ascender. There was nothing wrong with my Ropeman1 setup except that it needed 2 carabiners and took a little bit to setup correctly. When I finally picked a Petzl up, I was sold. It weighs slightly less than my Ropeman1 setup and took seconds to connect including the rope pulley.

Just switched from ATC to figure 8 for rapel and really like it. I do use an autoblock backup connected to lineman's loop even though the double lock holds as advertised, just makes sense to have a simple backup. The rapel is super smooth and easy to control w/ the autoblock---just squeeze and descend. Helps to keep bridge longer to maintain separation from 8 and the autoblock backup. Thank you @phatkaw!

Well Frank, did you try out 'the phatkaw way'?

Lol. I did try it once. Worked as advertised.

I want to like Brocky Auto Stop method with the figure 8, but it’s pretty hard to get it to release as it wants to stay locked. I’m gonna give your method another go tomorrow. I don’t think I rappelled with one turn locked between the 8 and the rappel line. I’ll make sure and try that tomorrow.

Used the @phatkaw method 2x today and it works really well. The only issue I have is getting up the gumption to really pull and pop that rope out from behind the 8 when i'm ready to descend....takes a lot of pull and just makes me nervous. I'm sure with some more practice it will become second nature.

If you can get close to tree and take some of your weight off the rappel rope it ain't very hard to pull out the second wrap...

*Also, leaving one wrap around the 8 makes the descent very manageable.

Yeah I am leaving one wrap around the 8, it’s just unnerving to yank that hard on the rope while dangling from it, tho it works fine when done. Rappelled a third time today and it is getting easier and nicer! Thanks for sharing.

I use the @phatkaw method as well. I really like it. So easy. As far as the second wrap being tight one thing I have done to overcome that issue was to let myself fall into the tree and wrap my legs around it and take some of the pressure off the rope. The I just twist the 8 a bit with my hand towards me a little using the first wrap almost like a fulcrum. It seems to pop out pretty easy . but then again I'm also using 8mm ultra-tech rope. What size rope are you using?
