Whats up fellas?! I know I haven’t posted since the season, but it’s been a rough year to say the least.
I finally got in deer mode a few weeks ago, and started thinking about trying something new this season. I decided to try out the .5 in combo with the Phantom. My thought process was; the ability to sit down and stand up when I wanted, would be worth the money after those long walks, and on the long sits.
I’ll preface this with saying that I’m 6’2”, 220lbs, so not a small guy.
I went with the .5, and the 20” single sticks for a few reasons. I hunt public half the time, with several bonus buck hunts on places pretty far from home. I want the smallest profile possible on my walk. Nothing is more irritating than clanging and bangin on the way in. That being said, I was pretty worried about the size, never having seen the thing in person.
First impressions out of the box were, “holy crap, this thing is small!” But when I put the sticks on the stand, and cinched them down, I loved the way it all went together.
Ease up the tree was crazy. The last hang on stand I had was the alpha II, and it was a pain getting in the tree. That was the sole reason I jumped to the saddle to begin with. So being able to throw this thing on in 10 seconds was awesome.
I’m in my second practice sit right this second, and I’ve been here for about an hour. It is super nice being able to sit down on a seat for the first time in a while. Nice change of pace to say the least. Being able to stand up and lean against the tree is also very nice (I’m used to being on the original predator). Hanging in the saddle is also different with the way I have room to move around. I’ve seen the side pressure debate and honestly, I cannot see a scenario where I would have to put side pressure on it. I can literally lean over with my feet planted, or just stand straight up and lean over the same way. Now that is probably going to be an issue when it comes to stand placement when I’m actually trying to kill deer and get a good shot.
The one thing i can already tell, is that I like sitting down in it, but the platform is really short. To be 100% comfortable sitting down, i would need another 12” on the platform. But I don’t think I’m willing to give up the small profile of this thing.
Being as I gave a kidney for this thing, I’m gonna give it an entire season, and then see how I feel about it. I usually get around 65-75 sits a year, most here around the house, a quota hunt or two, and a couple bonus buck hunts. So I’ll get plenty of time in it to really see how I feel!!
Less than 4 weeks and we’re hunting here in GA. Can’t freaking wait!
