Gear you liked/disliked 2023

If I remember right you’re the expensive sock guy? If not either way, I’d recommend Mystery Ranch. Mainly when they’re on sale. I have 500$ in a frame and two bags. If not I’d only have mid 300$. I’m usually not afraid to spend money on stuff but I personally don’t see the point in a some of these crazy expensive packs. Unless you would use it every hunt and not just for packing out. If money wasn’t an option I’d look hard at Exo Mountain gear. Even then I love my mystery ranch packs.

let me know how u end up liking them. I’ve heard some people say they arnt as warm as the first series but idk how true that is. I’d definitely like something to pack down better than my fanatic series. They look sweet!

Just double tapping on Mystery Ranch packs. They really are a better designed pack, from a sure-enough pack company. Yes, you pay for them but they well designed and well built.

Light frame pack. frame, gide lid, and grabber. Hold my bow going in, and hopefully packing going out

Switched from Sitka and first lite to all wool and won’t go back. (At least anytime soon) cheaper wool military issue pants and older button downs to sleeping Indian and Filson pieces for late season.

Same here! I had a bunch of Sitka and first lite stuff but was always cold! I am definitely cold natured but I had always read that Sitka was the best. I ended up doing research and found other people like me that tried wool and were very impressed happy. I sold all the Sitka and first lite and went to 100% wool. I wear two layers of wool thermals (top and bottom) wool sweater, king of the mountain wool overalls, Weatherwool Al’s anorak (the best!!!!), first lite wool neck gaiter, and a Filson tin cloth/wool waterfowl hat. I also have a Filson wool vest I can add. With this set up I’m super warm plus wool is silent. I’ll never go back to plastic clothing tor hunting again (besides rain gear).

Last year was my upgrade year and I liked everything so I won't go back through the list. The one piece I've really been loving is my solitude bibs. I can wear them in the 40s with light long John's and I can wear them in the teens with heavy long Johns and a pair of pants. All the right pockets, not at all bulky. Just fantastic for mid season to early late season.

How does the Weather wool compare in weight to Filson?

I would say they are comparable. I had a Filson double mackinaw cruiser that was definitely heavier than my weather wool anorak. I will say that Weatherwool is superior in every way though (besides maybe fashion to some). Weatherwool is 100% USA made and sourced plus their wool and components are also better in every single way compared to modern filson. Weatherwool’s wool is also completely comfortable against skin, unlike itchier filson.

LIKES
-Scentlok saddle jack and pant with base layers. Good down to 40 without anything else. Very comfortable and the pockets are in the right place.
-Worksharp. Great for my hunting knives and two blade broad heads.
-Halo range finger. I've used it for years now and it works great.
-Rocky Boots 200g. They fit the bill and I've walked miles in them as well as pheasant hunted in them.
-Military assault pack, load bearing vest, medium pack, and large ruck. I use all of them for all different types of hunts.
-ColdAvenger masks! game changer for the colder days.
-NOTCH Saddle with a back strap. Did a couple all day hunts no problem.
-Sellstrom Ultra Flex III KneePro knee pads. I put them on over my base layer, under my pants. They are awesome. In the summer I put them right on my knees. The trick is to keep the bottom strap tight, the top loose.
-Minivan. Seriously I purchased a used minivan and I love it for hunting.
-basemap. Always has worked well for me.
-HHA sights. with my eyes seeing starbursts I can move the scope to let more or less light in to get rid of the starburst.

DISLIKES
-Tethrd platform. Used it for three months and it started to make noises. Tightened everything down, lubed it up, only lasted for a little while.
-Latitude method 2. After one full season it looks like it's already done. Latitude would not put a new bridge on for me either. That's too much money to be worn out 2nd season.
-My health. My health sucks. I'm sucking air all day long and the diabetes is kicking my ass. Shoulder pain, arthritis kicking in. I eat nothing but can't lose weight.
-Public land. need I say more? Asking to hunt private is about as rude as asking to sleep with the owners wife lol.

Likes:

LWCG .75 - rock solid and easy to set. At times I wish I had gotten the 1.0 for the addition platform size, but not enough to actually warrant swapping stands.

Uomo H1 flannel - thing is crazy versatile and the torso is definitely windproof. There isn’t a liner in the arms but I never noticed that being an issue.

Asio compact mobile hunter pack. It is loud at first but once I got it broke in I loved it. Finally done searching for a pack

Dryad killdeer. Love being able to tether (like a saddle) and then set my stand.

Hate:

LWCG doubles. I had beast sticks. Sold them to get these. Regretted that quickly. The standoffs suck - specifically the fact that you are limited to four fixed points that have to be in contact, as opposed most other standoffs that have multiple points on each side of the standoffs. I had several trees with deep/crooked bark (walnuts and a few burr oaks) that I could not get the dang things to set. I have since sold them and bought beast sticks again.

Regret selling:

BWMG hitchhiker pack. Was perfect for early season.
