HELP Cracked cam cleat… one stick attachment alternatives?

How long is too short? There shouldn’t be much difference in length? We can’t help you pick the best option without more details. What are we working with?

Sounds like you need to just go to Walmart and buy a cam strap…

You mentioned having a spare tether, you can use that but just make sure you leave just a little slack so that you can pull the stick up to remove it after each move since the tether won’t be adjustable after tightened.
I hear ya. It’s a 7mm accessory cord @ 8’ but after knots it’s probably 7’. It works okay just pulling through a cam cleat but there’s not a lot left over on big diameter trees. That’s where I’m thinking for a rope mod it might be just a little too short. Maybe you’ll say otherwise. I did consider a rope mod but that’s why I didn’t list that idea in the OP.

If it was me in this situation and could not get replacement in time, I would put on a Versa button (if you have one) and use cam strap. You just have to come down lower to release it and lose a height per move but it’s doable and your not messing with knots.

Right now I think I will take what I have on hand to camp. Good chance my buddy will have a spare cam buckle strap. I’m carpooling with family and won’t have time to hit up an outdoors store on the way. Perhaps I’ll borrow it and pair with the AlumiButton. Don’t think I’ll try a rope mod since I’m doubtful my 7mm rope has sufficient length, and I’ve never practiced it.

If no cam buckle strap, then I’ll probably install the Micro cleat and climb without my backpack to minimize weight since. After I get back I’ll try to fix my Standard cleat.

I use a cam strap and versa button for one sticking. You don’t have to come down to remove it. Just tie a larger loop and I stiffen it up a bit with a little tape. Also when you hang the stick don’t crank the strap down tight. Let the stick seat itself down the tree so when you when you pull up on the stick there is slack and then you just twist the stick off the strap. You could do this with a larger prussic tied to your current rope

You don’t need a lot of rope for the rope mod, I never had more than 7 foot. 7 foot will do a 2 ft diameter tree. If you’re one sticking a two diameter tree or larger you’re not going to be having a fun time.

I know you’ve already decided to do something else but you would have had enough rope.

Where are you located( thinking a local member might have one you can borrow)? Or can you order one to be shipped to your camp address/closest Post office?

Make a diy versa button out of a washer, spacer, gr. 8 nut and bolt and use it in one of the 2 holes already drilled for your cleat or double up and figure 8 the rope like you would mooring a boat.
I'm unsure of the size of the alumi button, buying an appropriate sized bolt would save you from drilling bigger holes in your stick and having slop when going back to your cleat.
One more idea....you could attach 2 prusiks around your stick (1 may do too) and use them to attach a cinch style or ratchet strap with hooks. Leave the cam cleat on as a stopper for the prusik below the cleat on the stick.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I might look into this for the future. I don’t think I’ll try this now because I don’t have time to practice tying a rope mod and dark thirty on opening day is not the time.

Your mounting holes are not going to line up from the micro to the 150 though. They have seperate drilling templates.

Just put the button back on there and use the cam buckle or your rope. 7ft is more than enough for a rope mod. You don’t have to “tie” a rope mod. You just wrap it around the button a few times underneath itself and pull the stick down tight.

As Chrighton said, the mounting holes will be different on the micro. Stay safe.

Thanks- I passed on installing the Micro when I realized the hole alignment would be off, plus my cordage is too big for the max spec diameter the Micro can take.

Thanks for all the input everybody. I had the good fortune of finding an arborist supply shop a few miles from the location of a meeting I was attending yesterday afternoon! Picked up some affordable 8mm cordage, and then paired it with some 6mm cord I already had on hand. I think a hitch attachment on the AlumiButton will work great.

Take this opportunity to stock up on important parts for future issues. A good rule is “one is none and two is one.”
