Help me pick a different arrow

Ive been shooting FMJs (which im sure plenty of you will dump on) but ive never had any issues...other than they just get too expensive to shoot so im looking at other options that are most cost effective and still allow me to go a bit heavier. I like TAW to be around 450gr and shoot 60lbs at 27.5in. What you guys like? Im eyeing some black eagle and maybe even gold tips.

I missed my target the other day(oops!) and shot through a piece of plywood(to the fletchings) with gold tip hunter xt 340, shaft unharmed.

Mind you, I’m only a year into compound bow life, but it seems like the gold tip hunter xt would accomplish what you’re after.

@Dmathews87 I don't think I mentioned my own arrows. 5mm Easton Axis with Ethics components. I built an arrow saw and bought a Pine Ridge arrow spinner. I'm not unhappy with my Axis shafts but it's worth spending extra for extra straightness, then spinning and nock-tuning.

I was shooting hunter XTs 340 spine with 12gr insert and 100gr broad head but was only getting 7-8% foc. I just ordered some gold tip airstrikes with a 300 spine to try out some 125gr magnus stingers. Apparently they come with ballistic collars too. This new set up shout get me around 12% foc I think

try out the GT 100gr brass insert if you want more beef up front. also adds more durability if you hit bone or stone.

Ive shot the 5mm axis, good arrows, havent beefed them up.....i choose those FMJs for the GPI at the time before i really started digging into all the other options . Ive pretty much narrowed it down to either those or the GT hunter XTs

If you move the weight from the shaft to the point, I'd expect you'll have similar ballistics, with better FOC. Some of your existing components might work but I'm not satisfied with the stock Easton components, and much prefer Ethics. Let us know what you settle on!

yeah im thinking the same...build new arrows at same or very close weight and i shouldnt have to tune too much. Is it just me or did the axis arrows jump in price a good bit? I feel like i bought them awhile back for around the price i can get the gold tips...

Probably? I bought mine last year from a local archery shop. I don't recall what I paid for them but I think it was less than what's being charged now.

Ive been shooting black eagle X-impacts with FOCUS outserts for 3 years now. Best arrow ive ever used. Ive tried Easton, Sirius and a few others. Nothing shoots better for the price for me.

I'm actually experimenting with this setup because I wasn't sure what approach to take. I hurt my hand earlier this summer and haven't had a chance to paper-tune anything, but I've got 185gr Grizzlies, 200gr Maasais, and 300gr SteelForce broadheads with appropriate components to get me to 375gr up front. We'll see what I actually take into the woods, and how I balance broadhead vs insert weight.
Jeez, my whole arrow barely weighs more than 375gr. Mind you, I’m only as tall as a June-born fawn so my arrow length is right at 28”, but it seems like you’d need a 150-lb draw to send an arrow that heavy downrange, let alone tune the thing. But color me curious to see your results.

Easton increased MAP pretty much across the board... I personally found that the 5mm Axis was one number over-spined for what I actually wanted vs. got. They did shoot goo though, just ended up heavier than I preferred.

not gonna lie, im really intrigued with gold tips FACT system with the screw in weights and the tool you can use to install from nock end. I could glue the 12gr insert in and tweak the screw in weights as needed. What i will probably end up doing is go with the hunter xt 340 and screw in a 50gr weight...that would give me a little over 450gr which is perfect for me and i end up with a bit more FOC at 17% vs 13% in current build.

I've loved every Victory arrow I've shot. If you want a durable, inexpensive shaft the V Force are hard to beat. My favorites are the VF TKOs. I have yet to break one and they fly great. If you like smaller diameter the RIP TKOs are really good. If you want lighter weight or higher FOC the RIP XVs are good, but not as durable. If you want a super durable micro shaft the VAP SS is amazing!
