How long does it take you to set up?

It usually takes me longer to pick a tree than to hang . As long as it’s not a giant tree I’m around 10 min up and standing without hurrying. That’s being very diligent with sound. Few extra to hang my gear

Never timed effectively going up but I timed coming down once with all my gear bagged up and stepping off it was a strong 10 min that was coming down a split tree with a few other limbs .I usually dont remember my stopwatch on the way up until about an hour past lol it took me 4 times to remember on the way down

Heres my video...Its sped up 6x time, original video was 18 minutes.

Really the worst part about that hunt was I accidentally left my grigri+ in the woods, fell out of pack, the night before's hunt and didnt notice till I got there in the morning so I had to run back home, grab my DRT kit

.

My first year using sticks and saddle. Four sticks to bow hanging in the tree, I was constantly under 20 from the start. I know I’ll get a little faster just based on becoming more familiar with what I’m doing.

Have to agree with many of the posts. I find that whatever your climbing method, if you want to be quicker, you need to focus on improving your technique, movements and fine tuning. Refined technique and repetition will unconsciously improve your speed.

There are many variables that affect every hunt and your climbing time. Since I have been mostly one sticking lately, I’m less focused on getting up the tree so fast, to more importantly climbing smooth, safe and as silent as possible. I haven’t timed lately, but I know early on I was about 12-15 mins. I am confident that has improved, but variables such as limbs, trimming needed, weather and clothes all can impact your climb. Heck even the type of bark on the tree can affect your time.

I walk quietly and but sofy at a steady pace til the las 150 yards or so of the spot i plan on hunting. Might take me 30 minutes to an hour to actually walk 100 yards and sometimes more. At the tree might take 15 minutes to 30 minutes depending the scenerio, depends on what the wind is doing.
If its windy day. Ill wait for gusts to hide my movement sounds.
Calm days will be the longest im like a snail setting up.
imho speed is bad and guys really think they must hurry to the tree and setup asap.
this is a huge mistake i did fir years snd i tell guys all the time. when entering an area or setting up in tree.
if your are sweating or even breathing heavy. Thats too fast

15-20 minutes to get unpacked, up, and settled in. But I'm mostly focused on stealth, not speed. I could do it much faster if I didn't care about banging, clanking and scraping!

I was out taking video this spring for the alternative platform attachment video and I recalled a video I had seen from the Wild Edge guys where they did a climb with their stepps blindfolded. On a whim I decided to see if I could do it with my one stick method. I set up the video camera so if it went horribly wrong there would at least be documentation of my demise. :tearsofjoy: I set it up exactly like my timed climb video, standing in front of tree with my pack on and all my gear (except my stick) still packed. I put on a kerchief as a blindfold and went about my climb. Now keep in mind this was June and I hadn't climbed a tree since January so I was definitely out of practice but I wanted to know if I could perform a climb in the absolute dark. I also had never tried anything like this before, my first attempt was my only attempt.

Remarkably the blindfolded climb to the same 20 feet took me just under five minutes compared to just under 4 minutes without the blindfold in January when I was in full practice. I was actually remarkably surprised how simple the process was. I didn't struggle with any portion of the climb. Even though I was completely sightless I was able to easily repeat the process strictly by feel.

For the record I do not recommend doing this. I didn't post the video because I didn't want to encourage anyone else to try it (or to take the heat from the youtube comments). I'm posting the end results of my trial now because I wanted to demonstrate that if you do the same thing, the same way, each time every time you will develop a system that's repeatable and easy to use without needing to think about it. Speed isn't important, a repeatable process is what counts. IMO you'll be safer with a process that's simple and repeatable for you so you don't need to think about it when its cold, blowing or raining. I've practiced this system to the point that I find I even check carabiners for closure without thinking about it anymore. It's all about practice, practice , perfection. Stay safe and pay more attention to perfecting the process than worrying about how long it takes.

To get everything settled and ready to shoot, using three full length heliums with fixed aiders and a podium platform, it takes me about 20 minutes if I'm rushing. It takes me about 20 minutes if I take my time...

In North GA we have a ton of straight limbless trees and since I use the LWHC as my climbing method and platform my setup time is fairly short at around 10 - 15 min depending on hunting height. I am hunting exclusively public ground right now, and many spots for the first time. Honestly, I spend way more time trying to figure out which tree to climb than I do actually climbing. I really need to speed up that decision process.

Same here. With so many straight trees to pick from, I spend more time on picking a tree than climbing one with the LWHC.

However, I always allocate about 30-45 minutes for picking a tree and climbing it. Personally, I feel slowing down starts at parking the car, if not even on the drive. The more I’m able to slow down, the more I relax and be quiet in the tree.

I admit, there are days where I wish I’d have a box blind with office chair so I could drive up, climb the ladder and sit down... is that still called hunting then? Lol

I seem to average 10-12 minutes platform climbing. Now using the lwhc it is less.

Tonight I timed my climb and setup. From base of tree to hunt was 22 minutes. Now this was heavy clothing, and trying to be very quiet. I also implemented a new screamer into my rappel rope climb. Not that the screamer took a lot of time, but this new piece of equipment did add to my setup and I had to remove it at height. That required me to use my linemans rope to disconnect my tether to remove the screamer. As I mentioned before, there are variables that affect every climb.

are your times with the saddle on or off...i.e. do you wear your saddle in or put that on at the base of the tree also?
