I think safety is being taken too seriously in this community

Alex Honnold is a beast. The man literally has an un-measurable grip. He honestly has more strength in his fingers than most people do in whole arms, or even legs. I have been following his career since he was a novice, and he has just simply defied what people though was possible at every step of the way. Unfortunately, he WILL die on a wall at some point. He lives his life on the very edge, and at some point it will finally cut him. His recent injuries are a testament to how far he has pushed his body to the limit of human capabilities. Continuous performance at peak level leads to injury. There is no question.

And he will be happy with it. There are things that people are ok to die doing and this is his.
I personally can think of better ways to go! Lol

If you are going to be stupid you better be tough and ready to die.

Yup. My wife's uncle and second cousin died last month on a mullet skiff after a storm popped up outta nowhere. Her cousin probably had 60 years experience out on the water. Died at a ripe, old age doing what he knew and loved.

Me, I'd rather go in my sleep, wrapped in a hammock where the swamp lillies bloom. If it has to be violent, maybe the authorities will find me and a 400lb hog dead. ;)

I wouldn’t mind going on a mountain hike in southern Colorado. I hope it’s far enough away to see my son grown with a family of his own, but aside from that... I am not too concerned with passing.

I figure I’ll just live like I’m going soon anyways. That way I make sure what time I have left is worth it.

Good to see our brothers across the pond practicing safety too!

This guy seems just fine without all the bulk and weight of safety gear...

Did you catch the part in the movie about how he fell about 12 feet and broke his back?

I'll be connecting my lineman's belt before my feet leave the ground thank you very much...

At least in this movie Tommy Caldwell climbs safely

Alex Honnold is a rock star! He is an elite athlete at the top of his game. He is on par with Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Jim Thorpe, etc. in their prime. Acceptable risk is such a personal thing. I ride a motorcycle. Some would consider that way too risky. I've gone into burning buildings and jumped out of helicopters and some people think I'm crazy for doing that. Alex Honnold just did what no one else has ever done. Would I do it? NO! But that doesn't make him crazy. He calculated the risk and decided that it was acceptable.

Yes, yes that makes him crazy

Many Climbers have more respect for Tommy Caldwell's achievements than Alex's.
Tommy's was a more difficult route done in a safer manner. He did what was considered impossible.
Alex's achievement was in many climbers minds crazy but he is an incredible athlete. He was fortunate but he prepared well and managed to live to tell about it. Maybe not next time. He is an incredible athlete. Many free solo climbers die.

I liked both stories... incredible preparation and perseverance but I respect the way Tommy climbed more.

Guys let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Sure he's as good as Jordan etc, but let's pump the brakes on the Gretzky comparison. No athlete in any sport, all time, is even close to the great one - period.

This guy is nuts! Bonker

Except that Mario was better.

Let's not forget Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe. Gretzky and Lemieux had no problem saying that he was the best, we shouldn't either :)

"'The NHL is announcing its top 100 players in league history without ranking them. But Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux had no reluctance to say No. 9 is No. 1. They agree that Gordie Howe is the best to ever play. ... “We all had so much respect for what Gordie did and what he accomplished,” Gretzky said.Jan 27, 2017'"

Sorry guys, but Alex Honnold is THE peak of human athleticism. There hasn’t been a comparable feat since Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens.

All climbing methods, platforms, saddle designs, and/or use of materials possibly mentioned in the post above are not peer reviewed for safety, and should only be used as an example of my own method. Do your own research and testing before becoming confident in any DIY solution to support your life.

Meh
Honnold's outstanding achievements aren't really athleticism driven. They're primarily a triumph of amazing mental control (in a manner that requires a lot of athleticism).
