If it fits it ships

Meh. I’d change it to “I don’t know why any country boy in his 20s wouldn’t want a truck.” I have 4 kids and my job requires I entertain clients regularly so I’ve always had full-size SUVs but now I’m driving an XC90 that I had no trouble carrying my last 3 deer inside; I’ve brought home 40 4x4x8s in it in one trip(all doors closed), and another time 15 bags of concrete… it’s got almost 9” ground clearance- more than a lot of trucks. I’ve never had a need to test it’s limits but it does everything I need it to. 90% of the guys I know with trucks have never put anything in the back that wouldn’t fit in the trunk of a Ford Focus. Granted my father in law has a beater truck I’ve borrowed a few times for dirt and mulch but generally if I need to move more than I can fit in my grocery-getter I’ll rent a uhaul or have it delivered. I’ve thought about getting a truck but why have a third vehicle I use once every 2-3 years. Driving a truck is about image not practicality. I’d like one for that reason but I’d rather spend the 80k on a new piece of hunting property.
I am seriously considering getting a Thule Hullavator and loading the next one on the roof instead of inside in a jet sled.
And this is by far my favorite thread I’ve seen here :tearsofjoy:

There’s a suburban (whatever GMC calls theirs), a Tacoma, an F150 and Chevy Traverse sitting in my yard. All 4x4 except the Traverse. The F150 gets 22.5 MPG and has WAY more room and comfort that anything else AND has more cargo room in the bed and a hard bed cover.

The Tacoma is my killing machine that will get me to and from anywhere.

The suburban is know as the “Survey Buggy”. I hate it, but it serves it’s purpose well.

The Traverse has a lot of room behind the back captains chairs and drives good, but I’m not small and the dash digs into my right knee. The Tacoma is more comfortable to drive for me.

Drive whatever you want, but if you don’t have a truck you probably shoot a crossbow,

P.S. I have 3 boats, a camper and anywhere from 4-6 trailers in my yard at any given time so there’ll never NOT be a truck around. My son has 2 F150’s and a Dodge 5500…..must be genetic, lol.

The only vehicle that i'd willingly give up my Tacoma for right now would be a 4runner or a 70's IH scout II.

But I can personally attest that the trunk of a Honda Civic has plenty of room for a Maryland deer. Particularly the yearling I put in mine, coulda fit like 5 of em lol

And a Prius can haul a surprising amount, including 8' lumber with the hatch closed

Back in the 2008-2012 depression, my company told me they wouldn’t pay for my gas anymore, and gave me a Chevy Impala. Not long after it was in a hail storm, and got l roughly 8-9k in damage don’t to it. Corporate told me I had to drive it like it was, so I did…I drove it to MS every weekend duck hunting. I drove it through rice fields like it was an ATV. I toyed dogs in it, one in the truck, and one in the back seat. I ruined that car. After duck season was over they let me drive my truck again, and finally totaled it out. We were self insured so they got to make the decision.

I don’t care what anyone drives…to each there own. I’m just saying after owning cars, SUV’s and trucks both 1/2 ton, and 3/4 ton, I don’t see how a man would rather have a car or then a truck. I have also lived in the city. I lived in Atlanta for 4 yrs while attending GA Tech. I drove a Chevy 1500 long bed. I now drive a 3/4 ton diesel into the same city on a daily basis. I never said a truck was safer then an SUV, I said car. I’d be in an SUV on road trips too if I had 5 kids, but I don’t see how you can get more stuff in an Explorer trunk then you can a bed of a truck with a Tonneau cover on it. I didn’t do the math but I believe a truck bed’s volume is much greater than the room behind the back seat in most SUV’s.

Since the age of 24 never not owned an old truck and a motorcycle. I've never owned a car. That said... I live in a semi-rural area. I hardly ever use the bed of my truck. For as often as I use it to haul anything besides pinecones and random crap, I could get by with a utility trailer. I've actually been contemplating replacing my F150 with a Honda Pilot when its time finally comes. If I lived or commuted in a city I'd almost certainly get an econobox for the commute. With what I save on gas I could rent a 4x4 for 2 weeks of deer season. Yeah, I can fit more in the bed of a pickup truck, but rarely need to drive anywhere with a bed full of anything. If we're going on a family road trip, we can fit enough stuff in a crossover SUV to sustain us for weeks at a time.

But we're talking about fitting deer into small cars. Never done that, but I have gone small-game hunting on a motorcycle. That was fun, if minimally productive. A lot easier to fit a couple of bunnies in a topcase than wrestle a deer into a car trunk.

I know this is mainly about people showing off shoving critters into cars but what about coolers and packs? What is the minimum size cooler a deer or hog fit into? You guys that pack ur critters out what is the minimum liters a pack needs to be to fit a deer or hog?

I fit a medium 100-150 pound hog inside a 36can soft sided cooler with 1 large bag of ice. It was a tight fit and the shoulder strap wasnt rated for that weight but it fit.

An Alice pack is way overkill and I could probably fit 2 or 3 more deer inside. I don't even know how many "liters" an alice pack is but it's big
Pack wise an 1800 cu in pack will hold a 125-130 pound deer broken down properly. A legit frame pack with an 1800-2000 cu in pack and load shelf will haul more meat than you want to try to walk with but you should be able to bring out any critter around 200# live weight in one trip without much trouble. A 300# hog will prolly take 2 trips due to weight more than the packs ability and room to haul it.

Per square mile, MD has some of the biggest deer in the country. Md and Delaware always hover around #9 or 10 for booners. Eastern shore and southern md grow em big.

I'm always impressed at how much crap can fit in a prius.

All these guys talkin about they don't understand how a man cannot own a truck...please lend me 60 or 70 grand. Truck prices are outrageous. I'm not spending 50,000 on a truck with 80,000 miles already. I was lookin in april and it's outta control. Had to buy a hyundai.

Nice.....whatever liter the Alice is, is way too much. The 100 pounders I think I could fit 3 pigs inside. It's still gonna be a couple years before these kids are grown enough I can start making outta state trips that will allow me to pack out deer off public land...but that give me plenty of time to put together a different system than I currently use. The rules at the places I hunt usually don't allow that option so my current saddle system is lean and mean with putting on miles in the woods as the top priority. Things will change if I can legally pack them out 100% of the time. I have grown to hate wearing a pack thou.

This here the 80-120 pounder in the Alice....tons of space for another 1 maybe 2Screenshot_20230911-170737~2.png

Yeah those Alice packs are big. I think 5 or 6k cu in. I am pretty sure I remember @WHW packing a couple deer out in one trip in his Alice pack. Prolly happened more than once knowing him.

Shhh! We aren't supposed to let people know... about the Prius of course!

I should have said "the MD deer I've shot" lol they... haven't been booners.
