Keto - If you're a saddle hunter, I think you'll dig it.

Tell me more about the crack chicken...gotta recipe??? Sounds like good "Super Bowl" snackin

It's pretty simple. I do it in a Instant Pot but it can also be done in a crock pot.

3 or 4 chicken breasts, inch or so of water, block of cream cheese and a packet of ranch dressing mix. Cook till done and then shred with a kitchen mixer and add Franks to your taste. In the Instant Pot it takes about 15 minutes from frozen chicken till it done. I imagine in a crock pot it would be 3 or 4 hours.

I started on the Beast Forum- Taking the KETO plunge
I listened to Dr. Berg podcast as well as Two KETO dudes. and on youtube there's a couple called Keto connect.
I keep the essentials at the house for when my wife cooks non keto food. Easy is burgers, eggs, hard boiled eggs, bacon, spinach and broccoli I stock up on frozen.
Always have blue cheese dressing, butter, mayo, avocado oil around.
I find it easy when I eat out although I drive the waitress and my family crazy with all the questions I ask.
I do intermittent fasting now too and only eat once a day at dinner 8PM. My wife says it's expensive to cook dinner for me, but eating once a day isn't expensive. Restaurants always do free butter/ mayo and blue cheese but the extra bacon veggies etc can get expensive.
Mcdonalds you can buy a round egg only with bacon at the drive thru.
Wendys I do a baconator no bun extra lettuce.
Dropped from 275 down to 220...I am coasting at 225 now. started July 9th.

Interesting fast food options. I'd never thought of that.

Can that be eaten cold?

On keto since April. I lost 60 lbs.

Eat a lot of venison burgers with cheese and ranch dressing.

Snacks I make pecans and walnuts with dill, powdered garlic, salt and ranch seasoning mixed with melted butter. Bake for 5 minutes. Delicious. Also eat a lot of eggs. I don’t feel any different mainly cause I didn’t feel bad before. I just wasn’t gonna buy bigger pants.

Nothing like being frugal to motivate a diet. I am getting to that point now where I have no desire to buy more clothes. So I am looking for options.

I have been getting a very salty taste in my mouth lately. I assume its ketosis, but most describe it as a metallic taste. If I had to describe it, its as if I took one of those little packets of salt you get at a drive through and put in right in front like dip. Anyone else?

Been on it for a little over a month, I get the same salty then other times very metallic, mouth full of nails.... Strange but guess it is part of it.

I’m about sold on the Keto diet. It was time to lose some weight anyway. I’m sure I’ll do ok on the Keto diet. I’ve always been good at losing weight once I set my mind to it. I’m equally as good at gaining weight to though as it’s always been feast or famine for me. Haven’t had any high carb stuff since Monday. Felt like junk Wednesday. Frequent urination all day yesterday. Feel back to normal today with exception of still peeing a little more than normal but not like the 15 or more times yesterday. I’ve been trying to stay around the 20g of carbs every day and around 1800 calories. I have to say without just guzzling oil it’s tough to get that many calories with no startches and moderate amounts of protein. I was going to add intermittent fasting by skipping breakfast in a couple weeks but woke up this morning and wasn’t hungry so I skipped today. Still not hungry but will have to cram it in at lunch to get even close to the calories I want to eat today.

My wife and I tried it but I only weighed about 160-165 at my heaviest. I'm 6 foot and have never struggled with weight, just being out of shape. I started it and got immediate results but honestly I got off of it because I lost too much weight. I got down to about 145 which is way too skinny for me. I'm back up to about 150 but I'm hitting the gym harder and eating WAY more calories and trying to bulk up. It's the first time I've had at least a resemblance of a 4 pack or 6 pack since high school. I definitely recommend it for people that are way heavier than me and also coupling the diet with exercise as well(cardio for weight loss). I do NOT recommend it for fellow skinny dudes like me. Lift weights and eat tons of meat! Venison being one of them ;) I think the overall enemy we're fighting is sugar and carbs(which turns into sugar).

Carbohydrates cause systemic inflammation. Excess urination during the first week or so of a keto type diet is just the body adjusting to less inflammation. An example would be if you banged your elbow on your desk hard. Your elbow would swell. That is inflammation. It's water weight sent to protect that area. Carbohydrates cause this same function, but systemically over your whole body. Remove the carbs from the diet, and the stored carbs in the body get used (carbs are the body's first choice of fuels, and will always be used first to exhaustion if present before using fat for fuel), leaving no need for the water weight associated with those carbs.
Many people also notice whats called the "low carb flu". I think this happens for 2 reasons. First, your body is used to sugar ( all carbs are sugars) for fuel, so it is inefficient using fat for fuel. The process to change energy substrates takes some time, and during this time the body is in a slight energy deficit. Secondly, our bodies store some toxins in our fat. Fat isnt "burned" off the body like many people think. There isn't combustion. Fat loss is just the body consuming fat for fuel. Many times, this makes people feel sick, as they are reingesting those toxins, and all at the same time. This will pass.
A big benefit of using fat for fuel vs carbs (sugar) for fuel is that carbs produce lactic acid when digested in the body, which is what makes your muscles burn when they are used more than normal. Fat does not have this biological mechanism, and causes much less buildup of lactic acids in the muscles. Sugars generally are good for "burst" type strength, such as 1 set of lifting weights, something like 10-20 seconds. Fats are very good for long term, "slow" energy.

I switched to a very high fat diet once, and on top of losing most of my bodyfat and looking shredded, my endurance and performance skyrocketed in the martial arts gym. I was more clear mentally, and did not have any issues with endurance.

Hope this helps.

For those of you who have been doing Keto diets for a while what is your favorite method of checking ketone levels. Blood or breath?

Still haven’t bought a meter. As of last Friday down 15lbs in 17 days. Most of that water I’m sure. Did my first 24hr fast yesterday. Surprisingly never got hungry. I could see that being nice hunting for an all day sit. I’m just not sure how y’all are staying hydrated while hunting. Especially like a high elevation elk hunt. It seemed tough to drink enough on a regular carb diet.

Congratulations @EricS! Keep it up, you've got a great start!! I'm getting ready to start back on Keto myself. I'm very inconsistent and have a lot of ups & downs with my weight, all by choice. Sometimes the motivation just isn't there. Last summer was my first attempt at Keto, and I lost 35 lbs within about 2 months. I gained it back over the winter. @EricS you mentioned fasting. Intermittent fasting works really well, and will definitely speed up your weight loss, even if you just do 16 hrs or so at a time. Keep loading up on the water!

@KelvinM12 I have always been pretty good at losing weight. Almost as good as gaining it. It’s keeping it off that is tough for me. This is the first time I have tried a Keto diet. Once I’m down 50lbs or so I plan to switch to paleo. I really like my fruits and veggies. I’ve done a lot of IF with 16hr fasting which is basically skipping breakfast for me. The 24hr sounds tougher than it is. Just skipping breakfast and lunch isn’t that bad.
