Keto - If you're a saddle hunter, I think you'll dig it.

I've loosely follow the KETO guidelines all of 2018. Dropped from 245 to 220 and leveled out. I do the bulletproof coffee every morning with eggs and bacon, salads for lunch, and not too strict on dinner (sometimes skip dinner). I tell my family its not a diet, just a different way of eating. Coffee and water are the only things I drink. Cut back on sweets, breads, pasta, etc. Gotta enjoy my dark chocolate though.

I usually have one meal a day around 7:00 and I usually start getting hungry around 6:00. One of my favorite meals is very simple. I look for a fat steak cut it into one inch chunks cut up some Bok Choy into chunks put them in a frying pan with butter and cover, cook until the steak is done add a little oyster sauce. Bok Choy is very good for you and has a high water content so the food ends up kinda steamed/boiled. I drink the juice too.

I do not follow Keto specifically, but the fasting I do achieves the same results for the same reasons. I found out several years ago that if I go vegan until 6pm (sometimes referred to as the warrior diet), I can eat anything I want after 6 and maintain my healthy weight. I lost 38 lbs and have stabilized for 3 straight years doing this in addition to mtn biking and active hunting. I always avoid processed sugars and dairy as much as possible. I have a good friend that follows keto and has had similar results to mine. If it works for you keep it up! If not, don't be afraid to try something else, we are all different and react differently. The key is you cannot treat any if these as a "diet" or you will only achieve temporary results. You must truly change your lifestyle to change your life.

Bwhana - good point - I actually do Keto and IF most of the time. IF definitely helps with healing the body as well

I would encourage you to have some before and after blood work done. We, my coworkers and I, were following the KETO lifestyle for a few months. We had our annual physicals and I believe I'm the only one who's blood work improved. The others had all kinds of cholesterol issues (to be read sky high!). I believe our DNA probably has a ton to do with how we should eat. But I refuse to have it tested because I think the government is collecting the results too. Yes, I know. Conspiracy...

That being said, I struggled with not being able to eat certain fruits and vegetables due to the sugars and carbs. I believe the good Lord designed those foods to be eaten, in moderation, without ill effects. I feel if it's natural and edible then I'm in. So, I'm subscribing to more of a paleo lifestyle rather than Keto. High protein, fats, fruits and vegetables. Low to no carbs, low to no dairy, and as little processed food as possible. Basically I stay away from the inside aisles of the grocery store.

It's not easy. It takes time to cook and my family isn't always on board with my meal prep. But then again they're teenagers and an adult wife. If you're hungry then find something else. That's where I'm at now.

Again, I encourage you to check with your doctor before and during this lifestyle change. Also, don't forget to add that exercise. Just eating fat and protein will make you fat!

Dr Berg has a video on this cholesterol part… cholesterol is not the problem people there's a lot of scientific evidence that the doctors got it wrong, it is the calcification in the veins that causes the problem.

Another HUGE factor to better overall health and well-being, as well as controlling cravings, energy fluctuations, and mood swings is SLEEP. Most of us don't get enough, or don't keep a regular schedule. Try it, you'll wonder why you've deprived yourself of sleep your entire life.
Amen.

There's a book called "Buddha in Blue Jeans." Super short, simple thing, but it's got some good, non-denominational truths in it. Highly recommended read.

One of the things that struck me the first time I read it was "learn to live gently in your body." Sleep is a big part of that for me. You wouldn't ask people working for you to go without sleep, would you? We push ourselves a lot. I consider sleep to be an easy way to be kind to my body.

I didn’t read everything but once you go on a keto diet stay on it! I lost a good bit of weight and had some energy for a 3 month span. The life style change was one that I couldn’t keep up. It’s a long story but it is what it is.

I went back to eating carbs or regular food and for every pound I lost I gained back 4! Seriously. My body went crazy storing the carbs! This was eating same calories as I did with keto just more carbs. I’m now back on another diet lol.

I’ve talked to a lot of folks who have experienced the same. Remember once u start u need to stick with it!

I’ve been on a lot of diets and that’s what it’s like. You go off the diet you gain more than when you started it’s not just Keto.

I agree with checking out Dr. Berg on Youtube...very educational. You get the understanding of why the body does what it does.
I went on the diet August 29th and was on it until November 10th. I lost 25 pounds during that time with no exercise.

I went to Florida on a volunteer clean up effort with Samaritan's Purse for a week in mid November, and did not stick with the KETO diet, returned to Thanksgiving, and have become re-addicted to sugar and carbs, and my weight has bounced back up about 5 pounds.

I found it very easy to stick to during the initial couple of months. I would usually IF until mid afternoon, then eat once or twice over the next 4 hours. Maybe a bedtime snack of mixed nuts.
Generally 7-10 cups of spinach/kale salad, I like it junky...bacon, pepperoni, cheese, olives, jalapenos, ground beef, ranch dressing. Another favorite is steamed broccoli and cauliflower with crumbled bacon and cheese on it. My wife makes up some tasty treats using stevia and other sweeteners.

I have found it easier to stock up on keto friendly foods, and eat a more individual diet, then trying to make large family meals. Too hard to regulate intake of different nutrients when it is all dumped together, in my opinion. A good carb counter program can help you track your day's intake. To lose weight you want to be under 20 carbs a day, under 50 should help you maintain.

I intend to get back to full tilt after Christmas, I want to get rid of another 20-30 pounds. Currently at 233. Plus I need to be rid of sugars for good...bad stuff!

This was an awesome thread on Keto over on The Hunting Beast

Ok folks a weight gain of 4 pounds is absolutely normal when you start eating carbs again. it has to do with your liver, kidneys and muscles storing glycogen. I am not doing strict keto right now, not even in real ketosis (been eating too many carbs from nuts and cheese over hunting season) but I still have maintained all my weight loss. When you start tossing starchy carbs back in you will store glycogen and then start triggering insulin again so if you over eat your body will of course store the excess as fat (that is what insulin is designed to do).

If you have a car with crappy gas in it, you can drain it and start using high quality gas.... but guess what will happen if you fill up again with bad gas...... exactly :)

I have a sister who is a licensed fitness instructor, and a good friend who has lost 147lbs (not a typo) on keto. I'm familiar with the information that's out there, and I'm not denying keto's effectiveness.

My only caveat is that there's more than one way to skin a cat. Controlled, healthy weight loss in general is proven to have numerous positive impacts on overall health. And if you ate 4,000 keto calories a day and never exercised, you wouldn't magically lose weight and feel better.

As OP mentioned, keto is restrictive. Humans are omnivores, and can live healthy lives on a variety of diets. Cutting out all carbs is a rather extreme way to achieve something that can arguably be done in a simpler way. It's relatively easy to drastically improve upon the average SAD diet. Eat less junk, eat more veggies, put the fork down, and move a little.

I'm always happy to see people improving their health. We all only have one body, and when it's done; game over. If keto works for somebody I dont want to stand in the way.

But I do think there's a touch of "fad" to the keto thing. Nutrition studies are notoriously inaccurate, since you can't exactly shove people in a box and feed them through a slot over a 20 year period. I don't think the official stance towards keto will change over time, I know it will.

Fat used to be "bad." My great grandmother was put on a no fat diet, and developed early-onset Alzheimer's. Now the generally accepted theorem is that the brain needs fat. Moderation could have prevented a very slow and painful death for her. I sincerely hope high protein, low carb diets do not have similar long-term affects.

Literally took the words out of my mouth but said it way better then I could have. I love seeing people find something that works for them to get healthier but if you did research I would imagine there are old fad diets that were on the very concepts that KETO is on.

Most diets start by cutting carbs/sugars and that alone would help you loose weight and feel healthier. I know its not the only thing that goes with KETO. I struggle with the love for food. I actually think my eating disorder is that I cant stop eating. I bounce diet all the time loose weight feel great and go back to eating junk food put all the weight on plus 5 pounds usually and the sad thing is I have been doing it for years.

The one thing people need to put in their head but for some reason I just cant YET, its a lifestyle cahnge. When people call it a diet or think of it as a diet when they loose the weight its hard for them to keep it off. You need to say or think of it as you are making a lifestyle change. Your mind is to powerful. You need to think powerful and be powerful to over come what the brain wants. Your brain wants the high it gets from the junk food, the quick satisfaction you get from the chips, bread, candy bar, soda.......

Congrats to all that have been loosing weight and a bigger hand to the ones that have been keeping it off.

I will never argue diets with anyone, its like politics and religion. Keto worked for me. I'm down 56 pounds in less than 6 months. I'm active and always have been. My body is healing itself now. Bloodsugar is good, cholesterol is down, and believe it or not, my Testosterone has come up from 225( on Meds) to 516 with no meds.I also spent most of my life snoring, I was diagnosed with sleep apnea coming out of the Army. Well I found out that my snoring is not a result of weight but due to lack of B1 absorption. Keto has corrected that due to paying attention to proper mineral intake. I don't snore anymore, nice side-effect. I spent as much time researching Keto as I have Saddle Hunting. It's not new, it was used to control seizures in the 1920's. Love Dr Berg, Keto Connect and Thomas DeLauer. It's simple science and it's worked for me and my wife, but it's a life style not a diet.At least for me.

I'm not on the keto train, but it's a nobrainer that a reduced carb diet would lead to weight loss. It gets results for a lot of folks. Ultimately I think it goes back to calories in vs calories out. I lost 40lbs and have experienced many of the benefits attributed to keto (better energy, less bloating, etc.)

That being said, my go-to "keto" snacks are eggs, sardines, and cheese. Definitely better for you than Snickers and a Coke, but a little harder on your trenchermates. Pickled quail eggs are particularly tasty.

No disrespect at all. I'll chime in here because this is a subject matter in which I may be able to help further understanding of a complicated subject. Calories in, calories out is an old fashioned concept that is no longer used in modern nutrition. A calorie is just a unit of heat measurement that a food produces when exposed to a source of ignition in a controlled environment. This is a standard measurement that can be used to measure the energy of a food, but not an exact measurement of how much energy a specific person would get from the food. Humans use a chemical process to derive energy from food, not combustion.

The terms calories and energy are not interchangable as humans use them. Think about this- depending on what time of day you eat a food and the metabolic state you are in when the food is ingested, the amount of energy gained from the food will be different every single time. A simple example to show this would be If you are starving hungry, you gain more energy from the exact same food than you would when tired or full.

Human digestion is a complicated chemical process that is drastically different in terms of hormonal response to different types of foods. Ie, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. 2000 calories worth if cake is not the same as 2000 calories worth of grass fed beef.

I weigh within 1 pound of where I have been for about 7-8 years. I eat 5-6 meals a day, each consisting of 700-1500 calories. Say 4000 calories for an even number. I vary from 3000 to maybe 8000 in a day. 365 days in a year, times 7 years, times 4000 calories for a whole number. How would I land within the same calorie range year to year to weigh the same? Homeostasis is a powerful biological mechanism controlled by our hormones, controlled to a degree by what foods are consumed.

Congrats on the weight loss, that is a lot of weight to lose on your own without professional help. Keto is very effective at many things, including rapid body fat loss and reduction of inflammation.
