Linesman's Belt gadget....

After reading through the description, I think the Ropeman 2 is the way to go. It's $10 more expensive but it can be used on a wider variety of rope and it has a more aggressive rope arresting design. Justsomedude, any thoughts since you seem to be the only one with any actual experience with these things?

Bought a ropeman 1, thought it would be helpful climbing with my hand climber seat. It is awesome! I like it WAY better than a blakes hitch. It is super light. I would even consider switching over to a rope tree strap because of it. Hoping to give it a try at some point this weekend.

Ropeman 2 weighs an ounce more.
Yes, it can be used on a wider range of Rope, but I knew I didn't need that.
For our application, the aggressive teeth design thing won't matter.
Ropeman 1 grabs hard.
No slipping at all for me.

I haven't had time to try it in the Tree Strap use because I rely on it so much as a linesman's belt.
I have been meaning to call them and see what they think.
I wonder if it would wear out your Rope if you tended to park it in the same general area a lot.

I'll let you know how it works. It is definitely a high quality piece of equipment! Good find! I love how light it is.

Hey Red
I'm thinking of the tee strap app as well. I think I'll wait until you've run it for a while to see if wear is an issue

I also emailed Wild Country and asked their opinion.
My rope is REALLY stout....it's the Assault Line Bluewater 11mm Static.
I know it won't just fall apart, but I am pretty sure that the Ropeman will wear rope more than a Blake's Hitch/Prusik.

Something to keep in mind.
A Blake's Hitch can be used as a descender.
With the Ropeman, I think you will need to get most of your weight off of it before you pull the switch to let it out.

Another thing about the setup...

You would leave the Carabiner/Ropeman attached to the end of your Tree Strap.
You would need a Fig 8 loop big enough to feed that whole assembly through when setting the strap on the tree.
You CAN attach the Ropeman to your strap on the fly, but it would be much easier to already have it rigged before you climb.

I just tried it inside my house (raining today).
It couldn't get much easier.
You just 'hip up' and EASILY slide it up to shorten.
To let it out, you need to pull on the Tail to unweight it and flip the switch.
When you put weight back on it, it locks right up and doesn't move much past where you were.
Easy to get it right where you want it.

I really like to keep a Fig 8 knot at the tail end of my strap CLIPPED to the Carabiner as a backup instead of just a stopper knot. That set up makes it harder to pull the tail to unweight it though.
It is much easier when the Tail isn't attached. You can wrap the tail around your wrist to get a good stable pull.

Here is a photo.

Ropeman clamps around the rope.
Carabiner clips through the Ropeman.
Bridge clips to carabiner, and the tail of the tree strap clips to the carabiner as a backup.
Really clean setup.

Think I am going to get another Ropeman.

One more 'fyi'...
The Ropeman 2 is $44.95 with free shipping if you have Amazon Prime.
The Ropeman 1 is $40.90 shipped from www.backcountry.com

I just ordered a Ropeman 2 so I will be able to compare the two next week.
At 1oz heavier, and $5 more I didn't mind having one of each

I'd like to see a video of how the rope man 1 works as well if you can do that it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Roger

So I got my Ropeman 2 in and it's not going to work. I'm using muddy rope as my lineman belt and those little teeth make it REALLY difficult to loosen it. I think I'm going to return it and go with the Ropeman 1 and a different line.

If your Muddy rope is anything like my old (THREW IT IN THE TRASH) Hunter Safety Rope, it is 'mushy'.
I am now using Bluewater Assault Line 11mm Rappel rope.
The opposite of mushy.

I'll get my Ropeman 2 tomorrow.
Will try it out asap on the Rappel Rope and see how it works.

After giving it a fair go in the back yard I think it just might work. I'm going to try it out tomorrow morning for the first time. However, I already cut off the old straps on my TS-9 and sewed new permanent loops using redsquirrels speedy stitch sewing awl. It has to work now...

I already got a response from Wild Country about the Ropeman.

He said he thinks this is a good application for the Ropeman (Linesman's Belt and Tree Strap).
But to keep two things in mind:
1: It is an Ascender. It doesn't adjust down under weight.
2: It won't cause excessive wear to the rope, but it works by "Crushing" the rope.
It will soften the core of the rope over time.

It definitely worked great for the tree strap. I like it way better than the blakes hitch. I noticed that it does crush the rope. I am going to make a little cloth skirt to cover it so it covers all the shiny parts rather than stealth stripping. I am also using a lighter carabiner than the one new tribe sent.

I tried the Ropeman 2 this morning in the tree and it was a total fail for me. It is nearly impossible to loosen the lineman belt after you've applied weight to it. I'm thinking this would only be a problem with the Ropeman 2 since the teeth are more aggressive and actually bite into the rope as opposed to "crushing" the rope. I think I'm going to return it and get the Ropeman 1 and just buy the appropriate rope as well.

I just tried the Ropeman 2.
It is much harder to disengage than the Ropeman 1.
It also immediately snagged my Rope a little.

Because it is made to accommodate smaller rope diameter, it is squeezing the rope more.
That in combination, with the smaller teeth AND the switch is lower profile makes it stick harder.

What you have to remember again is that they WANT it to be hard to disengage.
It is used as an Ascender and wouldn't be used to adjust down just a little on a regular basis.
