Just got home from 11 days in southern Illinois. Was a humbling hunt yet learned I have to remind myself to be patient and let the deer do what they’re going to do at times.. Still managed to bring home 2 bucks and a doe. Buddy with me got a buck and doe. All diy public land.

Were you hunting public or private? Looks like you found the honey hole!

My wife texted me a few minutes later, “maybe he’ll come back”. So I waited because wifey knows best. 10:15 my fingers are so red from cold and my arthritic toe is screaming for relief, I decide to get down. Back to the truck, oh crap I meant to put that memory card back in that one camera, lemme nock an arrow and sneak back to it right quick; wouldn’t you know who popped his 12-14” tines back up over the brush within 20 yds? The same buck. He did indeed come back, conveniently 5min after I was gone. Thankfully he didn’t blow at me but his hooves sounded like a hardback dictionary slamming shut as he bounded back through the thick stuff. Heart broken twice in 3 hours.
Moral: Wifey knows best.
A good friend once told me "You can sit all day and leave 30 seconds tooo soon" yep.

How’s the hunting been in DE? I had to move to OH two years ago, haven’t hunted at home since early 2020.

Can't complain. Bucks are really cruising this week. One buck tag left and I want it by trad bow. Hitting it tonight and tomorrow. We have a little warm front and it'll be pretty comfy.

Happened to me Sunday morning. Let my bow down, took pack off the gear rope. Put right arm through the strap and reached back with the left for that strap. Doe and 2 little ones standing about 22 yards. Shockingly, they didnt bust me and just went on their merry way. It was the cherry on top of a perfectly frustrating weekend of hunting.

It’s cold as hell in MI. But I just can’t help myself. Need some more meat in my freezer. Plus I can’t let Horn kill all the deer over here.

Weapon down has always gotta be the last task before descending lol

Hunt was a bust yesterday but had a great scouting session afterwards with immediate dividends. Very possible this is the buck I shot on 11/12 but I don't see a wound. Need a daylight pic/sighting to confirm. Same curvature in his tines but he's got an extra point on his right side I don't recall and maybe not as much mass. Yeah... I'm talking myself out of it as I type this

I didn’t really learn this until like 9 seasons in. Ridiculous. And to think my momma said I was smart...Well, I felt like a damn genius when I started noticing more deer at those opening/closing times and leaving my arrow nocked until the very last second. It’s now a conscious thought I have while climbing: bow is first on the hook, last off the hook.

I get that but it is my way of being committed to getting down. That and if the bow would hang in the tree when I take the pack off the other side lol. Prolly should test that at ground level. Seriously though that has always been my routine, sending the bow down first ends the hunt. It was only the second time in 42 years that a deer came in once the bow was down.

I do the same. Dropping the pull up rope is the commitment that that hunt is over. So far, knock on wood, I have never had it come back to bite me.

I've started using my pull down cord as my bow lowering cord. It helps me not forget to clip it into the rappel rope (I don't like it dangling while I hunt) and makes it the last thing I do before I go down
