LIVE from the saddle 2023

Wasn’t sure where to post this so I thought here might be good.

Had my first “oh crap” moment in a few years of mobile hunting.

As I climbing onto my stand (while Tethrd in) I reached down to tighter the bottom cam strap of my stand. No clue how but my knee hit the release for the first cam strap. My stand started falling away from the tree and it took my a second to realize why. No big deal as I had the second strap on. Once I hang my stand I tether in before stepping onto my stand. I leave my second cam buckle loose but there to catch the stand. Then I toe cam the top one. Then reach down and cinch the bottom strap tight.

Anyways not the end of the world but this is why secondary redundant safety needs to be in your system as well.

Thank you Lord for coming through with the safety I pray for.
My first serious sit on a ROS, without 1-stick, had an issue. The OCB came loose, and I stsrted sliding down the tree. Luckily I included a treble hook on my pulldown rope and was able to catch it, and slowly, gradually, pull it back up the tree. When I got it back up I was able to re-set the OCB and continued my hunt without incident, suggesting my issue was operator error. I had instslled it originally by feel, on the backside of the tree, and never confirmed all was as it should have been. Not nearly a consequental an issue as yours, but another reminder to be sure of your straps and buckles.

FINALLY just saw another shooter. Looked like a nice 9. He was bedded in some saplings about 100 yards away. I was watching that entire spot and never saw him come in. He just appeared. Took off an a mission the other way. I friggin knew he was in this corner somewhere. I put a lot of pressure on top so he came below. He didn't see me. I know where I'm going tomorrow

Beautiful morning in Western KS. 38° and calm. I killed a good buck out of this tree a year ago today.

Gun opener on michigan, went to a historically good spot. Just shot at a nice buck, he took off into the thickets to the right of the bigger tree in the middle. Didn't sound like he went far, but that's also toward private land. Giving him an hour then going to look.

Just had a really nice 8 pt out at about 80. I grunted to him, stopped and looked for a sec, then kept it moving.
It's been an interesting year with the grunt tube. I've killed my bucks in 19 and 20 with the grunt tube. Bucks were going away and it brought them back in. This year I've had zero success getting bucks to investigate this year. Interesting.

One of my best spotd here on my ground in Southeast Iowa. Yep...that's the county road 55 yards from my tree. The deer crosd the road from the bean field right at this spot. There is a long ridge that flattens out and ends right at the base of my tree. There is thick cedar bedding right behind me. There are 7 scrapes in sight. This young 8 following a doe came through right at daylight.

Dude, have you tried door dash from there? Cool set up.

This should be interesting. Just shot at an 8 pter. Literally moved positions and he walked by 10 minutes after. I honestly have no idea what happened. Sounded like a solid hit but I didn't see it. Sun was in my eyes. I'm waiting on this one. No idea how I even got a shot it's so thick

Aight we got broken fletchings, blood and unfortunately stomach on the arrow. Backing out. I didn't take up the trail the shot was only 15 yards away. He was pretty hard quartering away. Time to go get me a Carmel brulee Latte
Patience and optimism. Sucks for the deer but not for you yet. Keep everyone posted. This thread is great for recovery assistance.
I’m not an expert but that sounds like a dying deer.

Is it straight stomach or lung(s), liver, guts? or uncertain
No clue. I didn't see the impact. I listened and he definitely didn't crash. The angle he was at tho I have to imagine some liver/lung was hit as well. We'll see when I get back up there. Only thing I'm worried about is at the impact site is didn't see any blood at all on the leaves.

assuming entry is high lungs, exit is low guts blood trail will likely be sparse to non-existent. How long are you planning on waiting before taking up the trail?
