Lone wolf handclimber/ Saddle combo Part 3

So, Im not agile enough to strap the stand to strap the stand to the tree, so I came up with a solution that works well for me. I carry a OCB strap with 2 squirrel steps. Once Im ALMOST to hunting height I throw the squirrel steps up and off to the sides of the tree. Then I continue to climb until my hand climber is about level with the steps. The hand climber strap easily maneuvers over the steps. That way, if I do have a shot that requires me to be at an odd angle, I have those steps to lean off of.

Make note of where you attach your foot strap also. I originally had my strap attached where the blue dots are in the attached photo, but I had issues with slipping and the platform folding because there was too much weight, too far forward. I moved my foot strap attachment point further back (red dots) and haven't had any issues since. Like Adrena said, you have to keep your weight out toward the rear edge of this thing since the teeth are small and it works primarily on leverage.

Good point because everybody is different. Our bodies bend different, feet are different sizes etc...Find a strap location that works best for you.
I like my feet strapped tight to the platform, no play when i lift up to climb or descend.

I just made a little video walking all around the LW Handclimber. You will see it move a little when I step on the side arms. I also twist around the tree! I love this thing!

Your having to much fun!

I’m hoping this will get me up some huge pines that are so big that I can barely use my Summit Viper on

I have an XL lone wolf belt on the platform so it might work on big trees

I also might use gloves to hopefully avoid getting sap on my hands and then spreading it to my equipment

What if you used some of the summit stirrups to climb? (I think that’s what they’re called)

They hook into the arms on the bottom of the stand. Wouldn’t that fix the problem of the arm angle?

I’ll try to find a pic.

Something like these. You could also tie a stiff rope between the platform and the arms so when you’re raising up the bottom you’re raising the arms first.

I'm trying to be cheap so I used left over webbing. I'm sure the stirrups would work. However, I'm not sure how you would mount them to the platform without extensive mods?

I was thinking about 3d printing some wedges to put under my toes on the platform so it's easier to point my toes downward with stiffer boots. I think in theory, this might work as well. I'll report back whenever I get a chance to do/try this with wood or something .

I didn’t even use those on my summit. I hooked my feet under the arms. I’ve messed with the angle and I don’t think there is a problem.

I guess I meant using these more conceptually than literally. Sure, if these would work you could use them, but you could also use s stiff rope and make your foot loop between the stand and the arm. That should accomplish the same thing.

Ok so brain storm question for the group. I really like the hand climber option as discussed in this thread and actually have one enroute to be delivered on Thursday. This brings me to my question or idea. I have an old lone wolf sit/climb or whatever the name is/was. I never liked it from the beginning and it has basically been in the attic of my shop for years. I dug it out today and started looking at it to see if there was a modification that could be done to serve the same purpose as the hand climber. So I removed the seat without cutting anything and removed the folding rail portion of the top. The pics below are what I'm left with. I like the idea of being able to secure the portion open with the screws and the opening would fit on larger trees then the hand climber would. I'm waiting until the hand climber comes in before making any real modifications as far as cutting or drilling anything. This piece pictured with the rotten strap weighs 4.16lbs according to the wife's kitchen scale. I'm not sure exactly what I would want for the actual base I'm thinking a couple pieces of aluminum square tubing that I could just bolt onto it, paint and add some skateboard grip tape. IDK what the best option would be here so I'm open to all options. If I'm wasting my time and should just stick with the hand climber let me know. I'm just thinking if the weight and bulk difference is marginal the ability to increase in tree size for where I hunt would be a bonus.

Opinions?IMG_7519.jpgIMG_7521.jpgIMG_7519.jpgIMG_7521.jpg

I keep the hand climber that's on the way and sell your complete "sit n climb". You could order new belts, one XL and one regular. Then swap that with the new HC belt. I bet you can get good $$ for it.
Lastly, you could use the LW platform you have. Cut it back to the arms and there is your smaller platform.

The hand climber I have coming is just the seat (top) portion I see everybody using. Is there something about the new belt coming with it that I'm missing? Why would I want to replace it with another new one other than the longer belt?

I'm not following you on the LW platform comment. The only LW stuff I have currently is the "sit n Climb" climber which is still all intact (Minus the belts needing to be replaced). I just unhooked the straps for the seat and belt and removed the front rail which is just 2 bolts holding it on. So you would put it back together and sell it out right rather than modify this top?

Do the "Adrena bolt mod" (that's me) to the HC you have coming and you will be good to go.

I think you should replace the belts on your existing sit n climb so it's safe and you can sell it. Should get good money for it. BUT when or if you order the two belts, get one XL. You wanted to get on bigger trees, so use the XL belt on your new handclimber. Forget what I said about cutting the platform, not worth getting into.

Ok I understand that makes sense. Thanks

Just out of curiosity when do you guys normally replace the belts on these? I've have a hand climber from 03, belts look fine but I know looks can be deceiving. Want to sell it but don't want anyone getting hurt

When using the hand climber you are in the saddle hanging from a tether so a person won’t get hurt. Second the belts are steel reenforced so unless they look bad I would say they are good to go.

I'm sure it's been asked before, but is the hand climber undoubtedly a poor choice if hunting trees with several branches?

I would say no if it just has a few limbs. You can always jump limbs with it just like the one stick method when needed. Where I hunt I can cut limbs if needed. i usually carry a small saw and take out the little limbs if I really need to but I wasn't comfortable jumping limbs in just a climber. With this set up I would be suspended while re-attaching the climber base above the limbs so its much safer.

I would bring my sticks instead if the ideal tree has a lot of limbs in it though.
