Louisiana Saddle Hunter's Thread

Ayyyy lesséz les bôn temps roulerz!!! N. LA off grid here. Been wondering about having a meet up or somtin like dat. Lol

I'm originally from BTR, but spent the last 5 years in West Monroe. Moved down here just in time for the record heat wave. I'd love to do a meet up somewhere when the weather gets more pleasant.

I wish lol never had before though
They were not at all apparent for 3 months around Lafayette, however this morning whilst partaking in my 5:30 am piss, two mosquitoes were on me right as the flow started. I finished however, barely. There's been virtually no dew until the deridder fires around my "parts".

That said seems like wherever water is so to will existing deer raccoon rabbit and mosquitoes....

I’m off grid in the woods in N. LA, maringouin don’t mess with me but the wife and kids have no shortage of gripes of being tore up by them.

It’s fortuitous that this thread popped up today. I was just talking to my cousin last night. We grew up together hunting in MD and then he moved to and spent the next twenty couple years in NM. He just moved to LA a few months ago. He has three boys that love to hunt and he is looking for some public land to get his boys into whitetail hunting. He grew up hunting them in MD but his boys have spent their whole lives out west.

I knew we had several LA members so told him I’d ask the collective and see what you guys had to say. You guys have any recommendations for some public land around Charenton LA? Any places to avoid?

Not close to charenton but I grew up down that way and would gladly drive up north every year and every hunt it’s worth it. Tensas, Kisatchie, Thistlewait, Indian Creek, Lake Ophelia, Dewey Wills. Those are the best hunting in the state I put Kisatchie #1 hands down, the northern section not the Ft. Polk section. Closer to him there’s Sherburne but I haven’t hunted there since mid 2000’s so idk how good it is nowadays but the hogs there are tick tick.

Sherburne is full of pigs and mosquitoes, so get thermocells for the whole family. There's some deer but drag outs can be brutal.

for those of you who have hunted public elsewhere or lived elsewhere:

Is LA public like crazy pressured??? Almost everywhere I hunt, once gun opens, it's the orange army out there.

I hunted a lot at Tunica Hills WMA and Darbonne NWR and didn’t see hardly anyone out there. The only time I saw an influx of hunters, was during the brief gun seasons (2 weeks).

Any public land with an extended gun season is going to have much higher traffic. I am targeting ones that are archery-only most of the year.

During bow season not at all, during gun it’s a bit more but still no problem the problem is is like when you go to Tensas for the 2nd split, you’ll see all the trucks parked on the same spot like guys it’s 97k acres pick a diff spot, a lot of people complaint about pressure are literally hunting with everyone else. I’ve never come across another hunter in the woods when I’m hunting, but I stay away from everyone else I don’t park at the J hook and get on a 4wheeler like everyone else hence is why I’m always wondering why people say it’s over pressured, I’ve never felt as though anywhere I hunt is pressured much less over pressured and all I hunt is public land and always have.

gun season turns any and every WMA around here into the orange army...worse one i experienced was when i was hunting sherburne, that place gets absolutley hammered during gun season....Illiniois public land wasnt bad but their gun seasons are also different (i forget what it is exactly)

I've heard countless horror stories of friends who have experienced the wrath of the orange army out at Russel Sage and Sherburne WMA during gun season.
