Meet Betsy/ DIY Kestrel build

Thanks guys, yes I am too, it's bordering on being a professional job, a couple of wonky stitches here and there but strong, I have a couple of areas to stitch over to finish but it is coming along nicely, I can honestly say i will be happy to hang in this and not be concerned about it, I have almost got the lineman on now and it has stiffened the whole area up with some nice stitching, I am getting to grips with the machine now. The hardest part was the grosgrain and where i got my wonky stitches, that was real hard lol. I can see this getting addictive, I am already thinking about another to see if I can get perfection lol, regards wayne

nearly there, well pleased with how it's gone very strong indeed.

That turned out great, real nice job dude!
How much $$ did it cost for materials? I may have to get a little seamstress in me for a winter project.

For the record Betsy is a very strong name for a saddle and is usually reserved for the likes of a cant miss Rifle or Bow.....just saying.

Great job! Looks really good. What did you use for the buckle?

Impressive! You did an awesome job! I cleaned up an old singer model 66 that's been stored in my garage forever. Been trying my hand at sewing a sit drag and a diy RCH. I've got a lot of room for improvement after seeing your work.

Thanks guys I really would say for anyone to have a crack at it, loads of posts now on different ones to follow and if you go steady and follow the patterns and instructions it will turn out great. I spent $65 on materials and thread including needles, homebrew the buckle is from a climbing harness a petzl gym which I basically removed the leg loops and incorporated a new set into the saddle so the whole thing is structural and comfy, when climbing DRT the pressure was around the waist belt but now should be around the but and belt I like the idea of using the climbing loop for drt and the seperate bridge for hanging, many regards Wayne.

im in awe of you guys that are able to make your saddles especially incorporating the RCH which im tryin to do but not having much luck and btw how are you joining and stitching the 2 pieces of saddle material together to make it look seamless

thanks Razorbak, it is really comfortable and I am really pleased with it, I planned on doing another like everyone else but this is so comfy I don't need anything different, I prefer the front buckle on the RC harness to the cobra. on the stitching just put the two half moon pieces together good sides inwards, i used a double sided tape to stop it moving and stitch along this line like so.

once you have done that turn the right way round and follow your first stitch like so

it looks like this from the inside

then when both faces are done put the outer over the inner and stitch vertically then finish with a grosgrain around the outside and start on your webbing, regards wayne69401961_1653943451409825_7895986770251087872_n.jpg

Let me ask, why did you use two separate pieces of fabric instead of one? Is that to get the cupping in the butt area?

yes and it really does fit well , my first was just from one piece which worked ok to be fair I just wanted to try the kestrel style to see what that was like, when I got my industrial machine i went for it, my first machine didn't have enough umph to get through the rch webbing
here's my first attempt and you can also see how the machine struggled, regards wayne

If I was to do another one piece style I would use mesh instead of the cordura but in all honesty I find the kestrel clone all I need it really is comfortable for long sits.

A big thank you for the explanation..it makes sense now..will attempt this again after i get a new thread injecter as i just broke mine last night going thru webbing and BTW..your saddle looks great!!@!

Thats how i broke mine the plastic cog broke, in the end I went with an all metal geared singer and its great,it really is all about the machine then just sewing slowly till you get the hang of it,regards wayne
