Looking to try and film some of my shots/hunts this season.

not sure where to even start with gear. Is it worth it to go tactacam route to start, GoPro?

not Trying to carry a bunch of extra stuff

I looked into this myself, decided against it for now. Look on YouTube, a lot of people using their phone. They make light camera arms. Don’t buy the cheaper muddy arm, it’s crap. They even make lenses for your phone to zoom and what not. Then they make mounts for your phone to go onto a camera arms. Could be in it pretty cheap and not adding a ton of stuff. This is just what I saw, sorry I don’t have personal experience with this.

Go pro style camera is great for wide angle shots. I bought a Forth Arrow camera arm to do the same thing. It takes so much more time to film I relized I wanted to just hunt. May still give it a go after a while. Hiking in miles with a bad back and extra gear is not conducive for me. May end up selling the mount at some point.

Haven’t used it hunting yet but I have a GoPro mounted on the end of my stabilizer. Got some good footage shooting 3D. It seems like a better option to the Tactacam as the footage is more stable and you can just film in 4K and have the ability to crop and still get decent footage.

I’m running the tactacam 5.0 mounted to my riser and the tactacam Fish-I mounted to my tether. Have the remote in my pocket. Deer walks in, hit the remote, automatically recording. Cost is around $450 for cameras and mounts.

Camera arm, cell phone. Problem solved problem staying solved

I was looking at the 5.0z was going to clamp it to Gear strap on tree to reduce vibration at shot. Really just want to use to it film just before, at (most important) and after the shot

Here's my experience.

Best way I've found to get kill footage is a head-mounted camera. Head mount means 1 setup for wingshooting, bowhunting, muzzleloader, rifle, etc. Head mounted means you have automatic critter tracking software and hardware (You look with your eyes, Bert!) and less vibration from the shot.

Camera arms, tripods, and camcorders make for great footage, but are a drag to carry and keep nice in duck mud or deer thickets.

My phone takes good enough footage to entertain me, my friends, and (very surprisingly) thousands of Youtube viewers.

If you want to document your hunts for you and your buddies, I'd say a gopro for your noggin and a phone for b-roll, interview, hero shots, etc works fine. If you want semi-pro or pro results, you need much more gear and/or a crew, and your hunting will suffer. Those things are not in my want list.

FInally, if all you have is your cell phone, I find a lot of satisfaction watching a video of me going over my stand setup from the base of the tree, following the blood trail from first blood to the critter, and giving a short post-kill interview. 5 minutes of that can take me right back to that morning, doesn't cost much in terms of time and effort, and doesn't impede my hunting success.

I've been slow to video my hunts. I have dabbled with the youtube thing up to the point of monetizing and making dozens of dollars. That's been rewarding, but the most pleasant videos for me to watch are private videos I've uploaded of does feeding under my tree, ducks working to decoys after a limit, and post-kill interviews. For my personal amusement, a phone is really plenty.

do we know what he’s using to screw gimbal into?

* NVM it’s OOAL WayPoint

Yeah its the OOAL Waypoint. I got one on his last sale, its tiny. The only thing I have left to buy is the gimbal. Edit, just ordered the OM5 direct from DJI. I originally got into saddle hunting to free up the load to have room to carry filming gear. Finally I will actually start this season and the whole package is mere ounces.

I run three cams depending on what Im doing including my phone.... Canon M50, Samsung s22 and GoPro 10

The canon and Samsung allow better depth of field for artistic style shots or interview footage. Also yes, more zoom. However when it comes to action the 60fps rates turn off the hardcore image stabilization. GoPro will allow me to shoot 5.2k at 60fps with Hypersmooth still engaged. This means a few things. 1: Its butter smooth even on my SXS. 2: with 5.2k I can crop way in to get zoom without compromising the image quality. 3: 60fps means anything even zoomed in can be slow motion. You must also consider battery management and will you want to use your phone as a phone. If so, how long will it take for you to get it back into video mode and do you care?

Me personally I am not trying to film a TV show and I dont have a camera man. So yeah I use what makes sense for each situation. I can tell you what my phone wont be doing is recording in sub zero temps or where Im near water. Ive also recently shattered a phone camera when I dropped it off road. I can replace a gopro lens, a phone is an insurance claim.

Check out diybowhunting’s arms. They’re the lightest and most compact I could find . Perfect for a cell phone or small camera.

I have an updated video with the latest design. The intent is still the same, lightweight, easy setup and quiet. The arm is now more packable. Depending on your fluid head and camera...you should be able to fit this is a smaller pack. Enjoy! Good luck this year catching all your hunts on video.

Take a look at this video. This is the route I plan to take this season.

Thank you. This is great. I was just looking at gimbals. I may not go with the DJI, but I like that Waypoint mount for it. I do like the gimbals for auto-tracking deer to keep them in frame so you don't have to worry about it on the shot.
