Just finished packing for my first long weekend at deer camp. All I have to do when I get out of work tomorrow is hook up the camper and head to camp. Looks like a wet weekend but I'll try make the best of it. Have umbrella will hunt! :D

Wandered around the area a bit last Saturday and there was a bunch of buck sign in familiar places. It seems like I've been doing this forever but I still get all jacked up about bow season. I feel like a kid on Christmas eve, can't wait.

Well it almost happened for me 2 nights ago. Found a community scrape while shed hunting in the spring. Went in and the sign looked great, found some rubs and the scrape was still active. So i set up. A hour and half before dark a nice 8 pt gets up from his bed on side of ridge and makes his way right to the scrape, while feeding on acorns the whole way. He stopped at 20 yards and I could have shot easily, but I knew he was going to that scrape. He walked over to it at 18 yards and stands in it and looks directly up at me then does the minute of head bobs. He doesn't like what he sees so he blows and takes off back up to his bed. Then stands up there and blows about 20 times. It's was a great encounter and really got the blood flowing!

I will back out on friday, going to a different buck bed.

Got another doe....from my ladder stand. Sorry. My Excalibur Grizzly did the trick: 42 yards and a 10 foot tracking job. Notice the trail cam on the tree ? She was standing next to it when I shot. A great hunt with my 2 buddies...Snoopy and Blu.

Great job Chuck!

I will be back at it this week. I'm out of deer burger and resorted to grinding up my steaks. So I need a deer bad! Hopefully tomorrow night I will have a deer down.

Spent the weekend with my umbrella and my Mantis. Rained every sit except this morning but at least it wasn't windy so I stayed relatively dry. Passed a few does but the woods are still really green and thick. This morning I moved out into a year old select cut and finally saw antlers. A nice shooter walked by about 100yds away headed into some old clearcut slash. Hopefully I can tune him in and get a closer opportunity.

Quick story:

I hunted this past weekend on some public land near my house. Late winter I scouted it and found a couple of good buck beds but, I didn't take the time to set up a tree or even figure out an approach. I planned on coming back another weekend but, then never made it. So this weekend I thought I would try to sneak in below the point the buck bed was on and hope I got lucky on his exit route, assuming he was there. I was going in kind of blind and was just going to use a combination of the my phone (which I had marked the bed on), the topography and my memory of the bed to try to sneak in underneath him without being seen. Long story short as I got within a couple hundred yards of the bed, I realized the woods was a lot more open underneath it than I expected. I was standing there assessing the situation and trying to decide if I could get under him without spooking him when a doe started blowing right below me. I took that as a sign and decided to back out and try a different approach another day.

I decided to scout out the ridge in the other direction which was a little closer to where my son was hunting, pick a tree and hope I got lucky, and to be a little closer to my son if he got something. I picked a tree on the ridge line where a field edge and the ridge pinched down a couple of trails and started my climb. I was about 10' of the ground when I caught movement off to my right and a doe stood up 50 yard away and started browsing towards me. She got to within 40 yards and laid back down facing away from me. So, I very slowly continued with my climb until another doe stands up 60 yards away and started feeding towards me. I waited until she laid back down and started climbing again. This continued for almost an hour, I would tie a wild edge step on when they weren't looking and then stand still when one of them got up to browse around. I finally got up the tree and got completely set up with both of these deer being less than 50 yards away, one being less than 40 yards, and this was wide open woods. Twenty minutes after I got set up they both stood up and fed out the hill away from me. I didn't see anymore deer that evening but, I had an absolute blast climbing that tree within site of two deer and getting set up completely unnoticed. There is no way I could have done that in my climber.

Luckily for both does they fed off without giving me a shot. I haven't shot a doe or young buck in years because my kids keep the freezer full but, this is my second year in a saddle and I haven't killed anything yet, so I had already decided one of these does was getting an arrow if the opportunity presented itself. Plus, it would have been a cool story to set up within sight of a deer and then kill it.

Good luck today! I will be in the saddle this afternoon. Great cold front just blew in today and can't wait to get out there!

Thanks. I had high hopes for this morning but so far nothing. Good
luck tonight.

Non-saddle sit behind my house this morning. Cold front finally made the apples in my apple tree drop. Looked like someone had dumped a 50lb bag of apples under it! Unfortunately the deer haven’t taken notice yet...

Be out again this evening hoping they finally get hip to them.

Public land hunt Sunday PM with a friend. Going to access a bedding area by wading across a river. Should be good!

Nice! I going on my first public land hunt for whitetail this evening. I'm taking a buddy I hunted with a couple years ago. I have been scouting this property for 4 years, so feel I got a good feel where the deer are, so hopefully it all comes together tonight! Mostly just buck hunting tonight, but will take a doe if I get a easy shot.

Haven't even seen a buck.....yet???
Finally cooled off a little. 70 out tonight. 56 in morning. Acorns are almost all on the ground. This is a good funnel area with a fresh scrape right at 40 yards. Just need a little luck !

Saw 5 does. 2 of them right under my stand. If you are seeing does eventually the bucks will show up. Not tonight....

I am back from my moose hunt up north (~Nakina Ontario). I worked super hard, but couldn't connect. Believe it or not, we had a full on snow storm up there. I wanted to take a moose with my saddle to cause all kinds of controversy in this contest, but...

Anyhow, now I am back on the case for some deer around here...

There is a peice of public close to my house that I wanted to scout this spring but never did. There is an area in the back that has always looked like good bedding just judging from the the aerial image and topo. So last night I went in blind, when I got to the area that I had picked out on the aerial I was looking around for a tree and decided to push in just a little bit closer. I went 30 more yards and jumped two shooter bucks. If i would have set up in the spot I picked out on the aerial I would have been 40 yards from these bucks with them having no idea I was there. :sob:

They didn't smell me so I don't think I spooked them too bad. My son and I are going back in tomorrow to try to connect. Hopefully they are still in the area.

6 deer walking in the woods...5 walked away and the 6th one is rolling over laughing about the bad shot I made
Sorry guys. Finally see a BIG buck and I used my 30 yard pin for a 25 yard shot at an alert deer. Don't know if it picked up in the picture but there are 3 hairs by the broadhead....all I have for hours and hours of sitting...and I would do it all again.
Just picked up a beer and am ready to make a plan for my next hunt. Don't you love this stuff?!

That is rough! It's no fun when that happen, and the worst part is you ruin a perfectly good broadhead.

Already got 3 more coming from Bass Pro...lazer strike 3 blade 100 grain. $19.99 and $5 shipping. Can't wait for one to connect with a big buck! The hard part for me is this was a target buck that I have on camera...big non-typical. Lets hope I get another chance.

That is hard to get over. It happen to me last year, but a week later I put a arrow thru the same deer at 5 yards, from the same tree. So just stick with it, you never know what will happen! I have been using the slick trick heads the last couple years and really liking them.

Public land sit #3 for me yesterday. Met up with a buddy and got on the downwind side of an oxbow with tons of fresh sign. Hunted a couple hundred yards from each other over some heavy trails with lots of fresh rubs and some scrapes all within security cover. I’d have put money on seeing a deer last night. Sadly we saw everything but - wood ducks, turkey, squirrels, and coons. Oh well still a beautiful evening to be out.

Not sure I’ll get out again before I head up to the UP this weekend for a scouting trip.
