Predator Cracked

Yes. I would be willing to bet that Metolius does not have someone check every biner before it is shipped. Maybe I am wrong but I doubt it.

Could be. I watched a tour of the Petzl factory. It seems they are all checked. They also seem hand packaged.

Here's a DMM documentary.

2:30 minutes in they say every carabiner is hand inspected one last time, so if the other humans making them miss something then they have one final check. This video makes me want to buy some DMM 'biners.

I've been wrong before :tearsofjoy: He did say they don't test every one though.

No prob. This is a case where it is a good thing. I am extremely impressed with most of the climbing manufacturers. I mean, they make carabiners for $10 that can lift up my truck?!?!? This is why I've always wished they would get into the saddle hunting racket. Imagine a hot forged and heat treated aluminum platform from DMM? It would have super cool lines and probably be anodized earth tones. I'd drop $300 for it easy.

All true, but when there are design flaws or consistent manufacturing issues that should be checked (for instance, if those bolts are supposed to be centered in that aluminum cross member, then NONE should leave the factory without that being checked....it is a simple machine....how many parts are there to check?).....then people start to have a point. It moves from "there are always some bad apples" to "this is statistically predictable" and perhaps too common for something like this.

Do you think Metolius sends out carabiners that have never been looked at by a human? If the gate hinge was off center, would they catch that and not send it out? Spot checking one from every batch only works for things like wrist watch bands. I would be scandalized if Metolius didn't have one person that looked over carabiners by hand while packaging.

Tethrd is always behind in shipping. 2 to 3 weeks for an in stock item is slow. Is that because the are doing extensive checks or are they behind in general so checks are less common (or neither)?

For sure. How has tethrd been with stuff in the past? As far as handling issues? I’m under the assumption they are contracting out the manufacturing process? It seems like a mis aligned bolt hole would be easy to catch. Maybe pump the brakes on marketing and direct some of that money a QC? Just curious questions about them in general.

I have a mantis saddle and have been happy with it. I had to deal with them once on an order I placed and I was happy with the experience. My main point was to other people to look at stuff objectively. Threads like this can blow up and people can get bad/biased information from either side of it.

Had gen 1 predators break in the past... no recall, or announcement...

Hopefully it will get resolved. My issue (different from your problem) never did. I think my bad customer service experience is the exception rather than the norm.

It is very interesting that the production dates of the two platforms on this thread are exactly the same. It could be that - on that particular day - 10920 - which I would take for October 9, 2020 - there were some potential issues with the casting or machining processes for either the platform or the leveling screw.

I wonder how many predator platforms are out there that have preformed flawlessly? I don’t own one just curious. There are very few products or companies out there that make any product that you can’t find a hundred posts with issues and/or complaints about the cs. So just keep that in mind about anything. For everyone that swears off and talks crap about a company there is someone that won’t use anything else. Not defending tethrd on this just a reminder to consumers. Don’t listen to fan boys, but also don’t listen to to the anti guys. Not sure which group is worse

. Those are usually the two groups most vocal and passionate.

To the actual issue, Hopefully tetherd takes care of the problem. I think they have to for reputations sake. And hopefully they learn from it and improve. They are still a fairly young small company right? Or are they owned by a big conglomerate like hawk, muddy, and 95 percent of other companies.

Exactly. I'd rather the company have a chance to make it right before they get trashed unecessarily. Same thing has been happening to XOP stands. There's been a few that have cracked that are more than likely from user error but people go to social media with it before contacting the company. I believe in most cases XOP shipped them a new stand. This just looks like a QC issue. I'm sure it will get replaced.

These platforms should be done by cnc from billet aluminum, not cast molded. 6160 minimum or even better 7075. Also have high stress areas beefed up. Problem eliminated. Im sticking with my ridge runner and a extra support strap.

X2!! Its never the thousands of quality products but the few that break that spoil companies reputations. For some reason users go straight to social media/ forums etc before the company can even help. This thread is a great example! I am not partial to any company as the way i look at it they all compete for my hard earned cash. Some win some don’t. Just glad mine(Predator) isn’t defective.

If a company is bringing a product to the market that can cause serious death or injury upon failure, it should not fail. Im sure this problem could of been been found through analysis or extra testing. If a product fails I dont think you need to give an extra chance to the company to make it right before airing the concern on a forum. What if this post helps someone notice a crack and prevent a failure at hunting height.

They had a chance, and a chance .....with the Gen 1
Failed miserably by my assessment, I really hope they approach this one differently...

This thread was started to see if anyone else had this issue or was it a one off instance. I've never bashed the company. Stand down.

I really do not think the OP was posting this to trash a company. The fact remains that failures can and do happen in some of the highest quality stuff. Im really glad that he posted this, it helps other inspect their gear, and reminds us that we need to inspect everything before we go out each time.

I did not think about the casting number being the date of Manufacture but it makes sense.

ETA: He confirmed that above me.

I don’t think he was either.

Sorry, just a QC issue....

No can do brother. You’re missing my point. Your post was fine and i threw my two cents in on the condition of my platform to help out with stamp codes for future readers. I just think these threads can be looked from a few angles. Someone might be a potential buyer and see this and think that this product is inferior hence the one bad platform can spoil the pot. I understand the gen1 had issues, I also understand a lot of them worked great. So many ways to look at this but none of them make the product look good. My approach would’ve been to hold off for a bit. Get a hold of the company, explain to them the problem and ask them if this is a known issue?See what they’re willing to do, if anything. Then i would have posted on the forum and let everyone know the scoop. Good or bad. Now for my complete and honest opinion on the platform itself. It’s okay but am worried of the structural integrity and seeing this post makes me think how extensive their testing was. When i am up 20 or so feet I don’t need gear “grenading” on me. I also think the casting is extremely sharp and it cut my finger open today while i was merely handling it to position it on a tree. Anyways, not a fan boy By any stretch but i see things differently and would have approached it differently. Everyone is different and that’s why this forum is fantastic. Guaranteed this thread goes 10 pages.

Anyone know if cast stands (Predator and Lone Wolf) are heat treated?

Was doing some reading because I wasn't sure if you could heat treat cast aluminum or not.
