Sewing Resources and Information

I just got my first sewing machine. THe lady I bought it from said she has a name. She said, “Grandma named her jezebel because she is a bad girl. If you don’t pay attention, she can put a hurtin on ya.” This was in reference to the power of the machine, I hope she still has it in her, because I’ll need that power! That's quite a machine for your first one. I look forward to hearing about your experience with it.

Anyone have a resource for service manuals? I can’t imagine why someone would be selling a manual that is 80years old. Someone must have them for download free. I found a place to buy spare parts but I’d like to give this thing a once through before using her.

I just bought some Tex 80 Kevlar thread. It is listed as V92 thread. Polyester Tex 90 is listed as V92 thread. Checking on the density of Kevlar and Polyester they are about the same. Maybe the Kevlar is spun looser.
I received the thread today I bought on ebay. It broke at 8 lbs, clearly not Kevlar. It feels like cotton. The label says 100% Kevlar. Trying to get a refund.

Nylon thread is stronger than poly isn’t it?

The same as far as I read on the internet. Nylon stretches more than polyester.

Nylon is stronger but it doesn’t have the same weather resistant properties as polyester blend thread

I agree with that but saddles don’t really fall into the category of gear that needs weather resistant thread. Heck, seasonal tents don’t either. Prolonged weather exposure, as in day and night for weeks or months at a time, are the the things that require weather resistant threads. That’s why I opt for stronger, tougher nylon. Even on the couple sil-nylon shelters I’ve belt I used nylon thread.

From what have read from diy follow saddle build threads and from sailrite it also has higher abrasion resistance.
I just got a mixed box of v92 bonded poly thread from the thread exchange that I am pretty excited about to try

I was refunded. The listing said 100% Kevlar. The seller said this is spun Kevlar not bonded Kevlar and breaks at 11 lbs not 30 lbs. The label says Kevlar but I think it was mis-spooled cotton at the factory. I will buy some from the Thread Exchange.

My stash from the thread exchange, this is from the “grab bag box”. Pretty happy with the colors

So I remember seeing in @ckossuth diy kestrel clone thread he was using and recommending gutterman Tera 40. You fellas with industrial machines, what size thread and needle are you using? I’m semi restoring an old machine so I’m reading and trying to pick out hardware. I have to see what size needle and plate it has right now then see what it will he able to run.

Do y’all recommend doing the servicing myself or paying the local guy $50 to come give it a once over timing cleaning and oiling. Decisions decisions.

Rockywoods.com is good place to get the gutermann thread
Depending what size thread and what material you are sewing determines the size of the needle, sailrite.com is a good resource for that.
Restoring the machine isn’t very hard, there are couple different sewing machine channels that go over cleaning. Look up Alexander dier and vintage sewing machine repair garage

I’m running a size 23 needle and 138 thread for saddles, packs, and life supporting webbing applications. A 19 and 92 thread for accessories.
