Sewing Resources and Information

I got my Singer 4452 for Christmas so now all I need to do is by some thread and material. Any recommendations for beginner projects?

I just sewed my first saddle. I definitely learned a lot. What I haven't been able to find so far though is the recommended stitches per inch in the webbing. After getting mine together, I started wondering if too many stitches will reduce strength in webbing.

I've done some online searching and searching the forum. No luck yet... Does anyone have a reference they can point me to?

Thanks in advance.

I don't recall seeing anything definitive on that subject. I recall seeing an emphasis on the type of needle to ensure you aren't damaging the threads of the webbing. This is what I could locate....and it's not overly helpful. The book "On Rope" (Padgett and Smith) is still the best info I have found

@ckossuth any insight on this??

So my mom just sent me pics of a Singer 221-1 featherweight. Its a portable model. It was manufactured in 1951. Could someone tell me if this machine will handle the types of needles and threads y'all use for DIY stuff? Its actually a beautiful machine and it appears to be in excellent condition. Im sort of assuming that if its a portable and lightweight it may not work for the heavier materials. It will good for learning I would imagine. And its free. Thanks for any help..

Yes that machine will work fine. It's a good solid machine with all metal parts. The featherweight designation only indicates its portability.

Just FYI, if you don’t have the manual for that machine, they are readily available online.

Ok cool.. I think she has done that already. She had it "tuned up" at a local shop, used it few more times and put it away. Thank you for taking the time to respond. As soon as the sting from the mantis/predator purchase wears off I need to buy some versa straps from you. I certainly won't be making those any time soon...

My mom is giving me this machine. Fully functional. Looking forward to going the rabbit hole of sewing..IMG_4258.jpgIMG_4251.jpg

That's a sweet machine! Looks like the plug has been replaced already...which is good. That time-frame, they are know to crack and fall apart (which is what mine is doing). I didn't realize how much smaller the featherweights are. Enjoy it!

Thanks... When I was just a "yute" I used to watch my mom work on this machine. I remember being some what fascinated by the mechanics of the whole process. I was thrilled to find out it was the same machine.

She recently had it "tuned up" at a local shop. Not sure what that entails.

Does anyone have any experience with a 50s model necchi nova? Good, bad?

Soooooo....diy sticks built, platform painted, amsteel spliced...maybe it's time I tried some stiching. What type of machine would I need to stitch webbing? Like tubular nylon to rock harness, modify a sit drag, etc? Without breaking the bank? Thanks. Oh yeah, this site sucks (the money right out of your wallet). Lol

Sounds like your ready to remodel your sticks, repaint you platform, change to straps for Amsteel only to switch back. Then you might be ready to start stitching! Lol Rookie!

Lots of options out there. If you are looking to pick up a machine on the cheap, I would look for an early 60's or older Kenmore. Or a Singer 15 clone. Or pre-60's Singer. I see Singer 15 clones around here all the time for $30 and under in perfect condition. One thing to think about is if you want to be able to zigzag stitch. Many of the mentioned machines are straight stitch only. The Kenmore machines are good and able to zigzag. The one I have looks new and put me out $30. I had to do some work to get it to zigzag (was gummed up), but its a great machine.

Here's some info on the clones if you are wondering what I'm talking about...
