Sheds and dead’s 2023

Went out to do some small game (squirrel, rabbit) hunting and let my son know we’d want to look for sheds too. Quite the find. That’s pure joy my friends. Water bottle for scale. 5 inches or so at the base.

Great find. This may be the start of the little guys interest in hunting too.
He’s been shooting his bow every day and keeps me going after anything in season, it’s just fun to have a buddy to go into the outdoors with and I’m glad he is interested. I’d probably put more in the freezer solo but I wouldn’t trade any of the times we are starting to get to have together.

My father got me started when I was about his age. He and my Mother would put me down for a nap when he was about to go hunting with the promise that he would tell me his hunting story when he got home. I remember many a time waking up to a partridge, a pheasant or rabbit on a piece of newspaper on the dining room table and him having to tell me about it. This progressed to his deer hunting in Maine for week+ periods at a time. And when he finally pulled back in the driveway him having to come in the house to tell me all his deer stories before he could unload the truck. He'd bring me home treasures of beech nuts and cranberries from the woods and rabbit furs from ClarkesTrading post. I made my first kill with a Daisy Red Rider he bought me for Christmas at 5 or 6 . Brought it to show him with tears in my eyes. Didn't carry my first real long gun with him until I was ~12. Joined him for my first big woods Maine deer hunt when I was 15. Everyone went in separate directions, and I got lost in the woods for the first time. Fired 3 evenly spaced shots into the base of a big fir tree as I was taught. Noone heard or answered me. Trusting in my compass I found my way back to camp by myself. Memories..

I regret we didn't hunt much together as I grew older. He did deer hunt with me a couple times and witnessed me take a couple decent bucks during gun season. I grew to be much more more avid as well as more successful hunter than he, but I owe the love of this great sport to him giving me its start.

Seems new hunter numbers are falling off with the new younger generation. Hope you all give your kids a start like Husker.

Found this one last weekend. Not far from road. Looks like he died with velvet on by the red stains on antlers.

Usually red stains occur from that area of the antler having been covered by the acids of wet decomposing leaves, oak leaves.

Had an interesting week, found a shed (left) to match last years find (right)… ok target buck is walking around with no horns. Buddy sends me a pic of a ten point across the road a few days ago, great deer but no I’ve never seen him. Whaddaya know next day I get a pic of that ten point… wait a second have I been watching one big buck on cameras all season, or two!? They’re so similar I probably wouldn’t notice the difference. I’m stoked about it, but also feel deceived, tricked, questioning reality.

I found this shed yesterday when I dipped my toe into a new to me area I picked on a map. It is a very dense and nasty thicket surrounding a marsh. I just went in a short way yesterday but i plan to tromp down every inch of it in a few weeks. Anyway, within 20 yards of the pin I dropped on the map was this well gnawed shed and some impressive sized deer poops that looked to be about a week old. Also, there was a scrape under a bush. The area looks to have a lot of potential for next season. I just need to get in there, walk the place out and figure out how to hunt it.
Looks like from a 2021 deer shed. Lots of wear. Squirrels n mice usually do a ton of damage to a shed by the time I find one come turkey season.

He wants to take his find but I see it’s a 60” minimum. I don’t want to have him be disappointed that it’s too small to even be entered. I know it’s not winner of the year worthy but anyone have any idea if it makes 60? I tried to take a couple measurements but am sure I’m not in the exact spots. Appreciate the input, we’re happy just to have found it so no offense will be taken.

You guys should get out and look for the other side this weekend. It won't be far. When they are that hefty, throws them off a little and they will get rid of the other one.

Thanks, new to this. We’ll try again. I/we combed the area pretty well. Found beds and good trails but couldn’t get the other half.

Sunny days tend to have too much glare and its easy to pass over them. If you get an overcast or day with light rain go back over the same area in a grid search eminating from where you picked up the first one. All the ground and leaves will have same darkness and antlers will be highlighted.

The two I show in an earlier post were literally 45yds apart but it took me almost an hour or more to find the second one. Searching only ~6acre piece. Most of the pairs I've found have been within 100yds of each other.

Good luck. Have fun.

I'm guessing it's very close to 60".
Beam length+4 circumferences+ length of 4 tines. Easy to measure that antler.
