Spring 2020 Gobbler Season

Strictly recurve for me until I kill one. Run and gun (bow) with no blind, self filming. Using a short Browning Backpacker #55 lbs with 195 grain 3 blade heads and the game tracker string. My plan is to locate, set up a decoy and get between the bird and decoy facing away from the bird.Hoping for the texas heart shot. Slim chance it will work, but I'm not picking up the scatter gun till it does.
I've already set the bow up and tore apart an old vest to make a small side bag for minimal gear. Will wear a leafy suite. Been practicing all sorts of crazy shooting positions with ssslllloooooowwwww movements.

You picked the perfect broadhead. They make a hole to look through.

11 year old daughter shot her first turkey today. 24.9 lbs with two 10” beards and 1 1/8 and 1 1/16 spurs. She was thrilled. So was I.
Awesome! That's a great first bird but better yet a memory that will last a lifetime for both of you.

I started my daughter turkey hunting early and I think she likes it more than deer hunting. She's in her mid twenties now and has been bugging me about doing more scouting for our upcoming season (starts on Saturday). Had her on the phone yesterday and she was telling me spots to go look where we hunted last year that I couldn't even remember :tearsofjoy:

My daughter likes turkey hunting better too. She is in her twenties now too. Hope you both get one Saturday

That’ll be a whole project in itself. I have no clue how to do any of that yet.
Meat turned out pretty well. Tastes like roast beef. I was surprised at how good it taste after being told by a couple folks that it’s awful. View attachment 26887View attachment 26888
I pluck my birds and deep fry them . It takes sometime but it's delicious.

First year going out and will be on both public and private land.

Archery Only
My setup at the moment is a rhino 150 ground blind decoys are by flambeau (strutting tom, 2 feeding hens and one additional upright hen) doubt I'll use them all but got them new and for s killer deal. My broadheads are a decapitating style Bullhead by Magnus.(bow is dialed in out to 30+ yards with this head idk if I'd shoot further)

Calls I'm lacking on I have some push box calls tried the mouth calls but yeah not having the best time learning them and hope to get a pot call and work that in as well.

Wish me luck lol

Good luck . I have used Magnus Bullheads for years great heads . I shoot the 100 grain out of my bow and crossbow. When you hit them right they go right down.

Nice harvests of some beautiful Gobblers Ladies and Gentlemen!!!! My oldest daughter loved spring Turkey hunting too. She's in her early 20's and out of state doing the college thing (virtually). My middle daughter turned 12 in early February and I was hoping to have her in one of my classes so we could do the youth hunt.... then this blasted COVID-19 thing and the state shut everything down. I'm hoping we can get a class going in late June or early July. Well done Dad's and Mentors! Well done!!!

I’m going to need more details than that. Wow! Awesome.

After missing a good bit of the deer season last year due to surgery, I approach this turkey season with some renewed vigor. I only got to go out a couple of times during the first two weeks of the season, but didn't have much luck. On Thursday, 04/02/20, i decided to change it up a little and decided on doing a midday hunt hoping to lure a love seeking tom my way, Well that paid off in a big way. I kind of cheated, in that i used a ground blind to set up. I've been busted too many times trying to go "blindless" (maybe later in the season).

Well, after setting up a little after 11 am, i gave a couple clucks and immediately got a gooble that sounded off about 50 yds away. Having learned from experience, I decided to shut up and play hard to get. Well I believed, I didn't sound inviting enough and he wonder off still gobbling. When he was about 100+ yards away, I committed to giving him a couple soulful and lonely yelps. Well that ultimately works and he came in to meet a "Jezeble Hen" and her boyfriend "Jake". Mister Tom came in a little to close and wasn't practicing proper "social distancing" techniques, so I had to teach him a lesson.

60" JD Berry Tiapan II 50# and 26' , Surewood Shaft with Simmons Interceptor.

I exclusively run and gun for turkey. I hate all the sitting around and waiting that comes with deer season. My strategy for turkey is.....hike call hike call hike call hike call hike call hike callhike call hike call hike call hike call hike call hike call hike call hike call hike call hike call hike call v hike callv v v hike call vhike callhike call v hike call v vv v v v hike call v vvv v vhike callhike callvhike callhike callhike callhike callhike callhike callhike callvvhike callvvvvhike callhike callhike callhike callhike callhike callhike callhike callvvhike callhike call...

I have a ton of public land around me so I have room to roam. Sure I pass by some quiet birds but my goal during turkey is to enjoy the woods, cover a lot of ground and see a lot of scenery, and call in Tom to 20 yards. I would rather not get a bird than sit around waiting for one lol.

I’m in between that strategy & setting up. I let the gobbling type of day dictate how quickly I move on & how long my loops are..... some days your just better off hitting good spots where there’s usually a ton of scratching or good strut zones & just setup. But if I had my preference I’d walk farther to fight the “right bird” shoot him in the face & hike out.

Nice gobbler I shot a couple of years ago: Ithaca Model 37 TurkeySlayer using 3" Winchester No. 6's with a Kick's "Dead Coyote" Choke. I can shoot most anything out of this choke and it patterns it well, from 00Buck for Coyote's to 6's. The original choke this gun came with liked the old Active 5's but sadly they don't make them anymore!!!View attachment 26471View attachment 26472

Man I do miss those activ shells, all plastic red casing.... I found one in my vest a year or two ago.... killed all of my turkeys in high school with those!

You mean these :)

My dad found part of a box of 6's a couple years ago. I shot both of my birds the last two years with them. These are the only two I have left. I still haven't found a shell that shoots as well out of my gun as these do.

Ifyou want to learn how to kill turkey watch The Pinhotiproject and The Hunting public. them boys run and gun on public land. Calling is not near as important as woodsmanship.

That's the way to kill turkey

Wish I could've christened with a turkey, but took out the jx3 for the first time. 2 kids, an essential job, and a wife that works weekends as an OR nurse fri- sun didn't leave much for chances, but i'll take my opportunity to social distance. And couldn't resist not using the new toy. Works great on the ground too.
