I seem to get the general felling from a couple of people I know that the most important thing for them is having some picture to post on Farcebook, Instawhatever, etc and that actually hunting is something they want to do as little of as possible. They want people to think if them as successful hunters and they have all the trappings (sometimes a little too much) such as a giant 4x4 truck covered in stickers, a big trailer with a side by side on it and all the clothes to boot but if you look at how much time they actually spend hunting it is really weird. I feel like if they could dress up, run out for 1 hour and bag a 150 inch buck and spend 2 hours taking photos that this would be their ideal season.
Part of the lack of actual hunting time may be the fact that they have to work so much to pay for the $100,000 in "hunting" equipment they are on the hook for. A prime example of this was a friend of a friend in that hunting club I belong too. My buddy told me that the guy just bought a brand-new Ford F150 4x4 so he could hunt. He said, "Man he's crazy to buy that. Think about the payments and insurance." I agreed I would not do it.
A couple of weeks rock by and I ask if so and so has been out any hunting. My buddy smiled and said "No, he had to take on a Saturday shift to help pay for the truck, so he's working and can't hunt.", then he added, "The one time he did come hunt with me he asked if we could take my truck since he didn't want to scratch up his new truck taking it in the woods". The guy hunted maybe 3 or 4 times that season.
I'm just imagining that there is a real temptation to copy and paste others photos to claim some success for yourself when you feel such a strong desire to publicly show your hunting skill but don't want to put in the effort or can't hunt because you have boxed yourself in to having no time due to having to have all the trappings that advertising tells you that you need to be a successful hunter.
Of course, to me, when someone says stolen valor, what comes to mind is people who pretend to the world like they were Navy Seals, or Rangers, etc and never served a day in their lives. Those folks are despicable.
