Now the next question, ratchet strap or OCB?

Tried the OCB, never liked it. It was quiet but not totally, I know it was secured, felt safe on it. But, I was always worried about it.

Ratchet strap is old school, been playing with them all my life. If you touch the noisy parts they make almost no noise, and if you space out that noise I never alert anything that didn't already get alerted by me taking my fat behind up a tree. I know they are secure, and I can make it so over secured if the bark is giving me fits. Feel safe on it, partly because if I feel like it is slipping I can go down and tighten it more by just running the ratchet instead of opening, readjusting and the reattaching to the tree. So, I don't worry about it as lol as I put it up.

I am the same way about our preset ladder and hang on stands. We all go up and make sure we are comfortable with the stands may or may not have to hunt in the next 4 months. This includes everyone having to run the ratchets, examine the straps and ropes, and feel the nuts and bolts to make sure they are good. Otherwise you are not allowed on that location.

ROS is where it’s at. Put them about even with the top of your sticks. It’s money. Why anyone wants to carry a platform is beyond me. The only advantage a platform has over a ROS is relieving one’s self of their morning coffee. A little dribble on my knee pad never hurt a thing.

This was my first year in a saddle (mostly run and gun), and I hunted exclusively with a one stick with a monarch on top and four squirrel steps. I have already found myself in a couple situations where I could walk around the tree but could not get a shot off because of surrounding trees. If I had a platform, I could have spun around and had a better angle with no brush in the way

Comfort isn’t an issue. If I’m going to use a platform I want a bigger one. There is a learning curve/ adjustment period when switching to a ros. I would definitely say elevated practice from a ros is more important than when using a larger platform. I have to use a ros with those smaller platforms just to be comfortable so why even bother with the platform.

I switch from an ocb to a ratchet. You can make a ratchet quiet, you can also lose focus and create alot of noise with a ratchet.
Like someone else already said, I have been using ratchet straps most of my life. I am very comfortable with them.
I also have switched to a ROS only for my half day sits. I used a partial ROS with my platform so not a big deal for me.

Possibly a dumb question, but do you add the steps to the platform strap or keep them completely separate? Do they still work with an amsteel daisy chain attachment?
I didn't like adding steps to my platform strap, too much fiddle factor. I found it easier to use a separate set up.

I’ve done it both ways - put the steps on the same strap as the platform, and had the steps on a completely different strap. Some pros and cons to each.

something that helped me use ROS more was using a WE Stepp at height when I’d use WE to climb. They let you stand easily, and increase surface area if wearing a rubber / softer sole hiking boot . I can set a WE smoother than a OCB with tree hopper set, but no issue if I use a dump pouch I put away at height.
