Team 10 Thread

I really didn't want to tell y'all about last night but in the interest of brotherhood and comradery here we go. Last night I went to a spot on some public by my house that I have deemed my "honey hole." It is where all the deer get pushed to when gun seasons open here. Its not very useful at all during bow season, but man you can see 10 deer every time during gun. Was there last night and had deer pop out literally as soon as I climbed my tree. Watched 7 does feed around for 2 hours. 10 minutes of shooting light left and I finally had one walk into range for my slug gun (75 yards) so I took aim. BOOM! She stands there and looks around for 10 seconds and then continues feeding. Clean miss. Then out of the corner of my eye I see antlers charging out from right under my tree. I am pretty sure this buck had been feeding under me for several minutes but I didn't hear him because I had my hearing protection in since I knew I was about to shoot a doe. Well, this buck now stops and gives me almost the exact same 75 yard shot the doe gave me. Boom! He stands there a second and then feeds off completely unharmed. I am now out of 12 gauge ammo because I didn't want to pay $10 per round to buy more. Now it's a long 1 mile hike back to the truck empty handed and still with a buck tag in my pocket. Also I am 100% done with that stupid slug gun. It's terrible to shoot recoil wise, it loves to scope bite, it's heavy as hell and has caused me more issues than I'd like to recount. I have already sent my 45-70 barrel to a guy in Kentucky to convert it to a smokeless muzzleloader (I am only allowed to use either a MZ or slug gun at my WMA during gun seasons). He guarantees 300 yard accuracy with these barrels. I can't even get a consistent 75 out of my slug gun. Now I am just rambling. If there's one thing deer hunting teaches you (and turkey hunting for that matter) it's how to gracefully deal with failure. Better luck to the rest of the team!

I was set up like I wanted to be but then the headlamp came bobbing thru the woods and the deer in the swamp I was trying to kill all blew at him and ran off thru the water in the dark....I got down and left a steamy pile for him by his truck for later :)
Scouted around this morning and not seeing much...about to check in to the 3rd block of woods for the day....geeezzz

Man I am gutted for you. Two shots on two deer and coming home empty! I believe it’s time for an upgraded gun sir

A steamy pile that’s awesome

I checked in to a block of woods I have probably the least amount of time in....Florida desert...found more tree stands and cameras...I set up and didn't see anything until after legal shooting time....as I was finishing hooking up the rappel stuff a deer walked by in bow range... I hiked back in almost a mile through a semi frozen marsh under 6 inches of snow tonight to a trail I had scouted out last year that really needed a SE wind to hunt it. The trail showed good sign again tonight but nothing moved on it while I was there. It snowed hard enough while I was there that I had trouble finding my in bound footprints in the snow while walking back out. I didn't cut a fresh deer track until I was less than 200yds from my truck and then there were three different fresh trails. Lesson learned . . .sit closer to the truck in the morning.

Those Florida WMAs seem to get more pressure than I would've expected with all those climbers and cams you find. Y'all got your work cut out for ya.

We have a lot of hunters down here. The deer are small but we are allowed a lot of them and there is no limit on hogs. When weldabeast and I went a couple weeks ago there were 5 people in a small acre parcel.
Back in November I hunted a placethat had 6 hunters on less than 80 acres of area. It is tougher than people think

This year has been a real lesson on dealing with failure for me. And how does a deer hunter deal with failure? He buys a new gun.
Gear is the answer to disappointment!!!! Honestly I obsess over my failures and then go out and try to repeat the circumstances to practice it until I can come up with a better result…. Or as mentioned above I just buy better gear lol

Yes good point. Practice is super important. I HATE shooting my 12 gauge slug gun. It's punishing and slugs are expensive. I am really hoping to be able to practice a lot with this new smokeless muzzleloader since I can tailor loads for it, it's recoil is much more manageable and I can shoot it for much cheaper.

This year has been extra busy on public land around here....I don't know why....just 3 or 4 years ago I'd hardly find evidence of other hunters at all .... But this base specifically has been getting hammered based on the parking areas garbage and other treestands. The deer are concentrated in the really thick stuff that is impossible to penetrate into without alerting everything with 2-3 hundred yards....last night was a good example....I was set up 50yds from the super thick area I expected to be holding deer and I could hear them periodically during my sit but they didn't set foot outta there until after legal shooting hours...wind was consistent all afternoon and Im confident they didn't know I was there.. the base has 6 blocks of woods to archery hunt but they are all pretty small acreage wise..u can walk pretty much the whole block in half/three quarter of the day....
The 1 good thing about all the other peeps is I am increasing my clip on reflective trail markers collection.... :)

Yea I can’t tell you how much money we waste on ammo just to shoot skeet up the road. A smokeless muzzle loader? Is this one of the new ones with some special powder or something? Last muzzleloader I shot was probably from like 1900 lol

Sounds like NJ. I walked a swamp edge the other day where you could literally shoot from stand to stand with a bow down the entire 500+ yard stretch. Some stands 10 yards apart, ground blinds at the bases of ladder stands, cell cams, corn feeders, scent wicks, you name it. Some truly mind boggling set ups. Still some deer in there though, I bumped a doe group that was staging on the inside edge of the swamp between a couple old rusty ladder stands.

Did some still hunting/scouting this morning. Found some big fresh yote tracks along the rivers edge at low tide. Followed him to where he popped up the bank into a thicket, knocked an arrow, and started mouse squeaking (pressing my top front teeth on my bottom lip and sucking air between them) not 15 seconds into my sequence this red fox popped out and spent 5 minutes sneaking around looking for the mouse.Screenshot_20211224-100058.jpg

Dropped back down into the river bottom and moved down 150 yards, popped back up and did another squeaking sequence. This time 2 foxes came out at the same time, saw each other and immediately started going at it. First time I've seen that.Screenshot_20211224-100039.jpg
