Team 10

Got out this morning. Way windier than it was supposed to be but it was a good wind for this public spot. Pulled a camera on the way in that had very little activity so I decided I’d go to a different spot. Took longer than I wanted but I got up in a tree with a ton of limbs in between a couple fields and a stream. Great pinch point I figure bucks would travel. Couldn’t see very far and with the wind I knew I wasn’t gonna hear squat. Around 7:50 I had what would have been a nice 8 show up broadside in front of me at 35 yards. He had every tine on his left beam broken off. He kept lookin behind him so I’m not sure if he had just gotten his butt kicked or he was just skittish because of the wind. Their was a scrape 20 yards up wind of me between me and him that he took a couple steps towards and I thought I was gonna have a rough decision to make but then for whatever reason he turned around and went the other way. Cool encounter that got the knees knocking. I hung a cell cam close to that spot and plan to be back there next Monday if there’s anything good showing up.

I’ll be out again Friday for what should be an all day sit at what’s been my most productive public land spot.

Congrats to everyone putting deer down still and enjoy your time on stand!

Alright boys... this wouldn’t have counted for the standings.... but thought I’d share this story from yesterday.
Got off shift at 8am and went to my side job, landscaping. Was about to start mowing when a guy I work with was waving me down like crazy, when I get over he says there’s a big deer over there!! I look and see a big doe and two smaller fawn by our grass dump, which is about 50 yards from one of my after work spots. As I’m watching them I see a head to the right swing over with a big ol rack on him. So I tell my buddy to watch them, I went and grabbed my bow and did a big loop around and above the deer. I’ve got the wind in my face and I’m crawling over the top of the hill to look down on them. I get about 25 yards away and can see the big doe, I creep a little farther and see the buck at 20 yards from me quartering away. The doe is quartering towards me and I’m in her line of sight so I’m moving real real slow but scared I’m going to jump her. I draw on my knees and stand up, line the buck up and hit him about 2 inches too far forward, the arrow doesn’t pass threw, he does a big kick and takes off about 50 yards and slows down And I eventually lose sight. I go back to cutting grass for 2 hours and then go look. Blood trail doesn’t start for 30 yards from where I shot him and it’s light, he makes his way into a thick bedding area where it’s good blood and I was expecting to find him in there, but the trail lead out of the brush and about a mile through these ridges, until it was tapering out and he made it to a creek crossing. Lost the blood trail and couldn’t pick it up anywhere, there were tracks everywhere so I couldn’t differentiate which way he went. I find blood 100 yards past that but it’s really small drops and very few. That was the last sign I saw. I spent another few hours looking with some buddies and couldn’t find anything. Went back this morning and checked along all the creek bottoms and bedding areas I could find and nothing to be found. That was the first deer that’s gotten away from me and I was beating myself up pretty good about it last night.
Sorry for the long post but had to share it. I’ve been getting good bucks moving in day light on the cameras around here so hopefully I line one up for us soon!
Good luck boys!

Losing one sucks. At that point, all you can do is all you can do, and it sounds like you did that. I've lost a few and it still wracks my brain as to what happened. If you use the experiences from this blunder to help on your next go around, then it was not a waste. Keep getting after it!

Got back out there this morning, was an ice cold windy sit with no movement, felt it was a fitting punishment haha

Live update from the saddle

Saturday was like a hurricane with 45+ MPH winds saw a 4 point and was shocked I saw that.

Yesterday had 9 does and a buck at 70 yards, guess I picked the wrong tree.

Today I moved to a tree closer to where is saw the deer yesterday. Had a doe being pushed by a buck right at first light. Came by at 7 yards. 15 minutes later had the same 4 point following them on the scent trail she left behind. Wind is perfect for it today I’ll be sitting as long as my stomach lets me.

Sounds like a normal day in Kansas... :)

So still beating my self up over not getting that buck. But it's been 70deg. Here is Michigan, and just seems to warm. Can't imagine there moving a lot during the after noon. Plus I have tons of leaves in my yard to clean up, and the wife is after me to spend time with everyone while it's still so nice out.
But I did take We'd, and thrusday off coming up. Weather is suppose to get back down into the 50s. Plan on sitting all day those days. May even push for Friday off if I have some close encounters. If not the 15th is gun season. Hopefully I'll get some points on the board for is here soon.

Well my story with this buck ends today. Been and after him since he showed up last October. Last year I got in on him two different times and had him stand up in his bed and not make it to me before last light. All of my encounters with him were in the first part of November last year then he moved off of public and I ended up shooting the buck that moved in after he left.

He showed up again on camera on the 5th of November(slightly smaller than last year. Hunted close to the the bedding area he was in last year the first morning after he showed back up. That bedding area was deserted no does or buck sign. Friday evening I got out late and sat an observation spot. Had four does work there way out of a known bedding area but didn't lay eyes on Mr. big. Wasn't able to hunt at all yesterday.

This morning I almost didn't go out because of the temps and the crazy winds, but I had a hunch I knew were he was going to be and needed the wind for cover to get into the thick stuff. Last night I did my normal scent prep, ozonics in my cloths closet and in my pickup cab overnight. Changed all my cloths at the back of the truck and rubbed the bar of deer heard scent all over my lower half. Then about half a bottle of doe pee on my pants and boots (never done the doe pee idea before, probably not smart?) but I knew I was going all in. Got in early around 6:15 and was waiting for first light. Turned the brightness down on my phone and was reading through the recon sling post on here.

6;24 10 minutes before legal light I hear crunching downwind, sounds about 20 yards away. Put the phone away and pick up the binos and try to glass the thick stuff, no luck, to dark. I sit there in the dark for a little thinking maybe it moved off and then more crunching. I was finally able to pick out a deer with binos, I figured it was a doe, can't see real well yet. Sit there a couple more minutes the deer is just standing there, right on the trail I walked in on. It finally gets light enough to see antlers. I cant see well but it looks the the 9 that is on the hit list but not the deer I'm hunting.

Okay now it go time... slowly get my bow over my bridge twist my body for a weak side shot but its just to thick and a little to dark to tell how many twigs are in the way. The crazy deer is still just standing scanning the surrounding area, been there for what feels like an hour(somewhere around ten minutes), I'm stuck twisted onto one leg ready to draw my bow and he's just standing there looking my direction. He is downwind and I'm just sure he is going to wind me and run.

As it slowly gets light I can't move he's looking in my direction and has even looked up at me once wondering what kind of blobs grow on trees here. I'm stuck twisted weak side and Mr. big decides its time to make a nice big scrape because hey! There was a hot doe here a bit ago....

This is when I get excited. As he's making the scrape and peeing in it its getting light enough to see who is visiting my tree this morning. Its him!!!
But he's still down wind no shooting lanes that direction. Over the next couple minutes he manages to take about another whole 5 steps into a small opening and I just cant decide if I can get an arrow through the brush or not... Finally he take another step bringing his vitals into a small opening... Draw my bow weak side, lean into the tree, aim for the opening... Perfect shot!!!

He takes a couple casual bounds away and goes down in seconds, in sight!!!

Check the time 6:47 Mature buck downwind for 20 minutes...

My right leg is screaming at me from holding a twisted weakside position for way to long.... But I don't care!!! I GOT HIM!!!
