Team 11 thread

Do red oaks typically start dropping around now or do deer not eat them until later in the season? There’s a couple big ones in my works parking lot that where dropping back in September real heavy. I’m pretty new to this and have always heard people say red oaks are a late season food source but wasn’t sure if they drop now or deer/ other animals just wait to eat them till later in the season.

Red oaks trend to drop later than white oaks I believe and white oaks are more palatable than red oaks, but they germinate and rot faster also. Red oaks won't germinate til spring and will still be a viable food source until then.

Gotcha, makes sense. Haven’t seen many red oaks this year just a ton of white. Was out this morning and almost got a shot on a coyote but no deer to be seen, just a ton of other hunters. Didn’t quite get to where I wanted to cause there where headlamps everywhere in the woods.

Walk 4 miles. Lot of old sign. Fresh hunter sign. Got to the back of the public and found a ladder stand.. so went back up towards the front. Found some fresh droppings, good buck track. So set up there for the last few hours. Continued my public perfect record of not seeing a deer while hunting. Did see some eyes as I was walking out. Saw what looked like a better spot. More fresh droppings. Even closer to the truck. Maybe it hasn't been hunted to hard.

So sat in the big blind tonight trying to shoot a doe. .5 hr to go I saw at least 1 buck on the other side of the field. I think there was another. Scouted for a tree for the morning on the way out. wind may not be ideal for the tree I picked. so might have to adjust when I get there. Either way gonna give it a go in the AM. Hopefully they come cruzen back thru there. With out winding me.

Got out Tuesday and saw a doe and fawn in the morning and bumped one later in the day walking around. Found some red oaks finally and a nice little rifle spot for early season next year on top of a ridge. I’ll get out Monday to a new spot to scout/ hunt so we’ll see how that goes. Other than that, week after New Years I’ll be in Alabama looking for some pre rut action with a buddy so looking forward to that.

Well, my season has been less than stellar. Got a doe a couple of weeks ago but wasn’t in the saddle. Scouted in at first light to a new area.

Went to another new area this morning and finally had a nice 8 working my way slowly. He got to 20 yards and I put the crosshairs on him and poof…only the primer went off on the smoke pole. He had a spike with him. They both froze then settled back down.

Managed to get another primer in it and now he is at 10 YARDS!!! Dropped the hammer and poof again. Primer only. Guessing the powder got wet somehow. Had to watch him walk away. Heartbreaker. Oh well, onward!

I missed an opportunity at one of my biggest bucks the first time I ever went hunting with a muzzloader about 4 years ago. My dad let me borrow his and didn't think to send me any extra primers (I didn't know any better at the time) and I had a really nice 8 come in chasing a doe at about 20 yards and I get my cross hairs on him and it goes "click" and there was no boom. Lol. But I redeemed myself 2 days later with a different 8.

How's everyone doing?? It's been a while since I've been on here. I didn't do any saddle hunting during our muzzleload and rifle season. I enjoy ground hunt during that part of the season. But, I do plan on getting back in the saddle and doing some late season bowhunting. Hopefully put some more meat in the freezer. :grinning: BTW I am in the market for a different saddle. I currently have a tethrd menace. It gets the job done but it's definitely not made for all day comfort. I was looking at the trophyline covert lite. But I haven't read many reviews on it. If yall have any suggestions, please let me know.

I got busted Friday. Group of does. One nosie one winded me. Wind wasen't the best. Saw lots of fresh tracks. Saw a buck go through there the night before. So know they had been traveling that area. Neighbors were slowly picking the corn next door. But was messing with my old bow tonight checking the timing. String popped off the cam and smacked my thumb pretty good. Looks like it's gonna be okay, but I got one heck of a bruise on it. So might need another day to heal up before I can get back out. Last day is the 1st.

Oh, Last sit I ended up back in my kestrel. Last few hunts with my transformer I keep trying to "fine" tune it. Decided to try the ol single panel again. I was enjoying the simplicity. Needs an adjustable bridge. But gonna give it a few more sits hopefully.

Heading out in the morning to the river I’ve seen a good bit of deer at and heard there’s a couple nice bucks in. Decent wind but not very strong so hopefully it doesn’t get too swirly in there. Been waiting all season for the rut down in south Alabama to start. Still got a few weeks to go before the action starts to heat up a little but hoping to knock one down then.

Got a doe this afternoon. Almost shot a nice buck Friday morning but he came in too close for me to be able to move to get a shot. Spooked right before I got the scope on him. Rut is turning on down here, saw some chasing and the cameras are heating up. I’ll be back in a couple weeks to try and get a buck down.

Small yearling but was definitely a highlight of my season so far! Between 3 of us we took 4 on Friday! All public land.
