Day one of two for a state park reduction hunt. Ended up sitting on the ground but probably bringing a saddle tomorrow. Area was thick and covered in deer sign. Scrapes, rubs, tracks, poop, etc. Actually pulled up on a doe but she didn’t give me a good shot angle. Had a smaller doe behind her but she didn’t comply either. Would have been chip shots. So sitting in the same area tomorrow unless someone else has also found it. Just need some elevation. Hopefully get us some points.

Was windy this past saturday morning. Stayed on teh ground, hiding behind an uprooted tree. There was less sign visible than when i scouted this spot in the summer, so i threw a desperation grunt, waited 15 minutes, then decided to get up and leave, scout to a preset tree since the wind died down. So i gathered stuff, put my pack on, and a nice 8 point appeared 10 yards in front of me, have no idea where he came from, staring at me as i stood up (Loud wind). We did a stare down for 10 minutes, then he relaxed, walked on the other side of the root, which was exactly what I hoped. I had popped a hole in the soil on the root as a sneaky blind peep hole, so i took a peak, with a plan to draw behind the cover, step out, and shoot. Well, that damn buck somehow busted me peeping through the hole!! Definitely not winded, saw the movement. Was pissed, but it’s good for yinz all, since i would have filled my tag on the ground, and we really need the points! going to try and shoot something saturday, doe or buck, we need points!!

Well guys - I went out this morning for firearm opener in Illinois and it was brutal. I saw a group of does and had a little 8 pt come in. I was so cold I had to get down after an hour and a half. I'm going to pick up some more layers and head back out this afternoon, though I may be stand hunting with my dad.

Good luck to everyone.

Went out this morning 25 degrees w/ 12-15 mph winds. 1st cold morning I’ve gotten to hunt. I debated stands before I went to sleep & got up early to go to a place close by that’s been good to me this time of year. But wind was a little different than what was forecasted last night. So I decided to go behind the house in the river bottom ( also meant another 40mins of sleep). Got up headed out & enough moon to slip to the tree without my headlamp. Climbed up & got settled. Was plenty warm even with the wind, first time this season wearing my IWOM. Beautiful morning, no deer! I questioned my sanity I stayed put. At 745 I heard crashing & caught movement, a doe shot between me & the riverbank. I saw the second deer & hear a grunt as he stopped behind a tree at 50yds. I was able to grab my bow & saw tines as he closed to 25yds, I stopped him & shot. He stepped as I released & it’s about 4-6” further back than I’d like. He walked slowly away tail tucked & bedded about 75-80yds across the river. I watched him for an hour through binos & he finally rebedded a few yards away in deadfall facing away so I slipped out about 3 hours after the shot. I’m going to wait until about 3oclock & see if he’s dead in that last bed. The highs & lows of bow hunting!!!!!
