Team #7

First time in that spot @hokiehunter373 , last weekend I was on familiar ground.

Yeah @krub6b , I was tethered to an apple tree. There were a few apples left on the trees, mostly a little south of that spot, like 50 yards or less maybe. Thick enough in-between you have to commit to one or 2.

I may try Sunday there. Still apples, still small clearings with open land to the west ( predominantly west wind here) and cover / water north and cover/terrain east. So the bedding seems to make sense. I also had a rub i don't think Lil Spike made. I do suspect it might be the only rub right there.

I'm still going to send it if I've got a tag so watch out doe lol. But I've got a month that's probably the most prime time to pursue a bigger buck. Our rut date is always 11-6/8 so it should be ramping up.

I actually went in to scout that terrain feature i never made it to. The deer ran to spot 1 I was planning to scout and I will go a little deeper there. I think** if there's a bigger buck around he'll be in spot 2. Thicker veg, and terrain

Whew man. Hunted public for the first time since last season. Got poured on and ate up by mosquitoes. Spooked two out of their bed on the way in but no luck in the stand.

Went back out to another public spot this morning and set up down wind of a bedding area in some steep terrain. I’ve hunted this spot over the years and know how the deer skirt this hill early season. I was lucky enough to put an arrow in a doe at 30 yards. She went about 70 yards and piled up in a ravine. It was one tough drag out. Pull up a foot, slide down six inches. IMG_3026.jpeg

That looks like a steep SOB you're in, be a good time for game bags and a pack. Congrats and nice work

Thanks. Yes it was not a fun drag. I called dnr to see the rules for doing that. They said you still have to remove the entire carcass minus the guts. Proof of gender has to be attached to one quarter. I’d still like to try it but it’ll be multiple trips. Motivation would fall off quick knowing I was packing out bones and skin at the end

Yeah removing the whole deer complicates matters

Congrats!!

I took a buddy from my apprentice class out with my on some private ground tonight. He said he has asked 5-6 people to take him out and show him the ropes and I was the first to take him. We saw a nice buck and I ended up shooting a doe. I’ll submit it tomorrow when he sends me the pics. He’s hooked and can’t wait to start hunting.

Man, way to get after them this weekend!

I ended up mostly scouting around the area I got my deer. Tons and tons of trails but honestly not a lot of sign other than that. Found at least one more bed, suspect it's a buck. Set up nearby Saturday but didn't see anything. Found a couple spots I'm going to try but I think there's crazy pressure there and I'm unlikely to see much daytime movement

Wouldn't have been saddle points but I did this silliness Friday. Nothing like crutches in the woods and a goof suit. Much needed just to get out though.

Before I crippled myself I was onto a buck leaving heavy sign. Haven't seen him but all the markings of a rowdy 3.5 year old. Fine with me and he lives close enough to a road I can gimp to get him. Actually he's left multiple rubs visible from the road which is no bueno. I cut some down a couple weeks ago but more popped back up.

Didn't see anything. Heard a few snorts <100 yards upwind of me, turns out when I left there was a truck parked the next pulloff, they must have been snorting at him.

Someone also had fresh ribbon leading into my secret little spot 60 yards off the road. Guess other guys are seeing the roadside rubs too.

I hate hunting from the ground. Made a little ground blind, and a ton of ruckus doing it. I feel like I have to sit completely statuesque off the ground, in a tree there is a lot more leeway.

Glad to see your getting out. Getting to be the right time of year where a making a ruckus may be beneficial to you, if you plan accordingly that is

Not the greatest pic of the deer but it was a double lung shot. Deer went about 50 yards and dropped. I’ve been using Magnus 2 blade fixed broadheads. The penetration issues I was having with rages finally went away. Probably helps that I’m shooting 70lbs now vs 60lb in the past. Both kills were pass throughs and the arrow was buried 10-12 inches in the ground. Unfortunately the blood trails haven’t been as good. Luckily everything has been dropping within sight.

Good on you for taking out a future hunter!

Just wanted to congratulate all you successful hunters on making it to first place this week. Hopefully I'll do my part at some point this season

Extra pics. A little under #70 solution ss @28 inches performance with a 425 gr arrow. Grim reaper micro hades pro 4 blade. Blood trail sucked, it went about 110 yards or so
Awesome brother

In to first place we go, guys! Great work. I promise I'll contribute eventually. Least I've ever been out to start a year but at least I know for sure I'll be out for a week straight in November in Ohio.

@Chad8489 great job on introducing a new hunter! Also, your results with the fixed blades are what I expect to continue. I think the blood trails vary by broadhead and by hit but are generally more sparse than mechanicals. However, put it in the right spot, and it doesn't matter because you see them drop. To me, pass throughs are the most important aspect besides shot placement.
