Team 9 Thread

Yeah, I plan on taking it just in case. Have you hunted that region? From what I can see by YouTube videos it hardly looks like big enough trees or open enough timber to suit stand-style hunting.
I've hunted the northwest corner, and I have some close friends who do a camp in the speculator area.

Not much sign in here yet. I found this spot mid November last year and it was pretty torn up. No rubs that I’ve seen from my tree. Right on the edge of some thick overgrowth and these oaks so we’ll see. Not in love with the tree I set up in and am second guessing my choice now that I’m up here. Got pretty sweaty climbing up the ridge but it’s shaded and I’m comfortable now.

Saw 3 does. One circled all around me for about an hour. Had plenty of shots if it wasn’t 80 degrees. Rappelled down and didn’t die. Packing up all the ropes wasn’t annoying. Good night overall.

All I saw tonight was a really jumpy button buck. Came out of where I expected a big one to come from deep in the swamp. It was windy and every time a dead ash branch would break off the deer would drop and do a 360 and wouldn't move for a few minutes. Poor guy isn't going to like Wi gun season if he's already that scared.

This weekend I saw two nice size does and a really tall basket 6, all just out of range. I have a 14pt pretty regularly on one of my cams though. All of his tines are split. Hopefully I can connect this weekend!

Looking good, weather cooling off here in Michigan and I had 2 shooters on camera this morning.

I went out Tuesday night, I saw 8 doe, nothing close enough to shoot.

My son killed a nice 10pt yesterday. The buck was 170lb, 2.5 year old, his first compound bow kill. He put a great shot on him quartering away, right through the top of the heart and anchored in the off side shoulder. He made it about 50 yards.

Got in a number of hunts in upstate NY. Many opportunities for everyone in the whole camp but couldn’t seal the deal. Pouring rain didn’t help! I did accomplish my first actual deer hunt from the saddle, so that was valuable experience.

What's your honest opinion after your first saddle hunt? Do you love it, is it going to take some getting use too?

Love it? Yes. Take time getting used to it? Yes. To me it is a significant advantage to achieve hunting from a tree for little weight gain (and speaking as a guy who never did treestands before). I was busted on the ground Sunday night by two deer who saw me move trying to scope them. I wished that hunt that I’d been in my saddle. I know stealth is important at height too but I think the ability to get out of their sightline is huge. That said, I also know I spooked one in the dark climbing when I got into my saddle the next morning. So it’ll take fine tuning.

Weather is starting to turn favorable here in WV. Looking forward to the start of November. Only working 8 days the whole month and just worked out a plan to head to southern WV for a short trip the day after Thanksgiving for a little private land rifle hunting to finish off the month.
