Just sort of rambling.....
Ok...between a quota of mine and 2 opportunities as a guest I've been/will be hunting the same wma in all seasons. 2 days in archery and killed a doe and saw a couple spikes, 2 days in muzzleloader was slow but did see a couple deer, and now a gun hunt coming up. I talked to a biologist who works this particular wma and he explained things that kinda changed my thought process and I'm trying to look at this place differently than I was before.....this property is 9k acres, 9 miles from top to bottom north/south, and never wider than a mile east/west. There is a single road right up the middle with a handful of side roads shooting off not very far. The east is bordered by a brackish lake the whole length and the west is saltwater river whole length. The north border is residential homes and the south boarder is a fence with woods continuing down south into safe zone for hikers, bird watchers, etc.
What the biologist said is they monitor trail cameras pretty much year round and after the first archery hunt most all activity is after dark. Because the property is so narrow the animals can hear every single vehicle that drives down the road. There is vehicle traffic year round but not a whole herd of trucks 3 days in a row....I don't know why I never thought of that before..kinda dumb... So after the first hunt the animals are on to the fact it's that time of year.... There are really only 2 or 3 large areas that are the furthest away from the nearest parking areas. 1 is a slightly elevated sand ridge that is kinda the same habitat I hunted the 2 previous hunts... It's thick palmettos and scrub oaks with some live oak hammocks mixed in. They got plenty of food, water, cover..... The trail to get to this area is 99% of the time on the upwind side off the woods the deer are in once the sun comes up.. Being so close to the ocean u can almost always count on east/northeast wind mid day to dark and the trail is east side of the woods... To access the woods from the downwind side u would have to get thru a swamp that I really want no part off... It's too deep to walk and so much vegetation covering the surface it would be difficult to paddle a boat over...well u probably couldn't paddle...u need a push pole... Anyway... So to get in there to hunt u would have to come in from the upwind side and bust thru thick thick stuff to get onto the downwind transition edge and there is no guarantee that the edge will even be able to be walked.. It could be just a jungle.... I'm 100% confident there are bucks in there to be found
The other large area is the salt marshes and the islands of woods out in them on the west side of the property...it's a long walk to get out there thru palmettos, gallberry, sandspurs and sugar sand....and again u are walking in on the upwind side once the sun gets up I'm also 100% sure there are bucks to be found out there too...
From what I can gather it seems that the animals are spending the day out in the salt marshes and moving in and out at dawn/dusk. Early morning before the sun gets up and warms the ocean there is couple hr period the wind will be consistent out of the west...once the ocean gets warm the wind will switch to blowing inland off the water....it has been this way almost every hunt so far.
In my head it's making sense to get out on the marsh early and and try to play the crosswinds and set up to were I can see a long way north and south and hope to see something crossing the savannah to or from the islands at a longer distance. Hunt till 8-9 when the wind starts getting funky and then get down and go explore the thick stuff that is close to the marsh edge for an afternoon hunt....but then on the other hand I could use that short window of west wind to bust thru the thick stuff on the sand ridge and post up and hang out till the wind changes then continue slowly working thru there....visibility will be really limited and short shots....
u guys think that's a sound plan? Other options are the really thick stuff that is closer to the roads but they all get hunting pressure...not a whole lot of other people make it into the couple long walk areas...I know some good spots close but I feel they are more a 50/50% chance bucks will be in those areas. Or another option is park somewhere I've never been before and rarely see other vehicles parked and go explore and hope into some fresh sign in those areas that have really no terrain features at all that everybody ignores...
