The "Try Something New" Thread

What caliber is your AR? I’m looking at getting a 450 upper to swap out with my 5.56 for reduction hunts. I have a Ruger American bolt action in 450. But I think the semi auto would be nice for the reduction hunts and I already have 450 ammo.
I sold my 450 upper and went with a 350 legend. The whole family can shoot it and will kill deer and black bear effectively. Maybe slightly light for some hogs but I don’t think many.

I tried to let my kids cut the grass.... It was new and exciting for a minute but the results lack luster

Lazy little bastards

I showed my old lady how to use the riding mower yesterday for first time. Thing has a 40” deck, and cuts a half acre yard in about 15 minutes. I cut all the edging so the lesson was just about how to operate everything and get the hang of it.

After she “finished”, I showed her all the spots she missed. Later when we were on the boat she laughed about a big strip of hair she missed shaving her legs. Thought about it a second then started laughing more. “I’ve been shaving my legs for 15 years and regularly still miss big spots. And you think I’m going to learn to cut the grass well enough to not do the same? Patient enough to wait 15 years?”

We both laughed.

I’ll be cutting the grass from now on.

New things I’m trying:

Being a father.

An actual conscious effort in decluttering my life. Mostly hunting fishing and camping gear, but generally cleaning out mental and emotional junk too. House is easier to clean, keep clean, looks cleaner. I don’t know if I can say the same about how I look, but I feel better.

A casual stab at gardening this spring has me interested. Pretty sure if it didn’t coincide with baby it would’ve been more productive but it still got my attention and is yielding some results.

Living with another person. I’ve been single and living alone for 20 years. Now I have two female roommates. Life comes at ya fast!

Writing a novel. I self published a book years ago on Amazon, but that was a collection of funny and disgusting true stories from my 10 years of experience delivering appliances.

Now I'm trying to write fiction, this story that's just been boiling in my head for at least a year. It's a lot harder, and it's hard to sit and write when there's so much other stuff going on.

I went down a YouTube hole on making stop motion animation figures, so it's not impossible that I might find myself dabbling with that too someday. Be on the lookout for a stop motion saddle hunting film...

I also have an old compound I'm thinking of converting into a bow fishing setup too. Never done it, but it looks fun.

The clutter is weighing on me, with decluttering high on the to do list. After several years of trying I realize I’ll need a few days off work to get it done. I have metal shelving in the garage with good containerization but I’m lucky to keep it organized for two weeks before the whole thing falls apart and the garage is a mess. With a two year old and a four year old I simply cannot chase the clutter any more I have to get rid of some stuff.

At the risk of being a little preachy, oh well, this year any catch & release fishing / fly fishing I do I’m going barbless and to highest extent that I can, lead free. Why the heck stick double treble hooks into a farm pond largemouth that you’re going to let go? I’ve been putting the side cutters / pliers to work on hooks and encouraging others that I fish with to do the same. Also safer if that hook ends up stuck in you. Past four months or so I’ve noticed no issues keeping the fish on the hook (steelhead, largemouth, bluegill) and much easier getting the hooks out once onshore.

For those who haven’t tried, fly fishing is a lot of fun, especially reading currents in a river for trout, but fun in farm ponds too.

A place to talk about things you're giving a shot and liking. It can be new food, new books, new hobbies, new people...whatever. Starting because as I creep into my 30s I can already feel the mental ossification setting in.

I'll start.

I have gotten wrapped up in fly fishing, which I still don't quite understand since its basically the trad-bow hunting version of fishing. But I'm loving it. Tying flies, flicking flies, and trying to detect fish biting those flies is something that requires you to be present, and I'm coming to appreciate that more and more. It's a stark contrast to the way I have historically hunted and fished, placing an emphasis on results first.

Also bought my first packet of green tea this week. Trying to develop an appreciation for the world's most ubiquitous beverage. Slow going, tbh. My favorite part about it so far is the little Japanese tea cup my wife gifted me.
OMG!! A 3 pound redfish on fly tackle will make you grin for weeks!!!

I used to own 2.5 acres and cut it with a zero turn (Toro or Snappper i think). I showed my new wife how to ride it, and after a huge urn and mailbox incident, i couldn‘t get her off the dern thing. I was reduced to weed whacking the perimeter (which took the better part of the day anyway). Southern Country girl…she took to Harleys the same way!!

Fly fishing is very effective for fishing moving water, and flies are very effective catchers of fish. It's not purely a vanity thing. It's just another tool, I find it kinda bizarre how people really lean into it as an identity thing.

I don't have much cooking now, summer stays busy enough as it is. I have been reading more, drinking less, and getting more exercise. Getting too old to burn it at both ends all the time.

My kids are grown and mostly out of the house so for the past few years I’ve been trying new hobbies. Last year was archery and saddle hunting. Both have become borderline obsessions now, so this year I’m keeping it simple.

Sounds dumb, but my thing this year is stretching. I’ve been doing it twice a day and have noticed a huge change. I’m back to working out and running fairly regularly after thinking I physically couldn’t do it anymore.

Stretching is very underrated. It doesn't have to be yoga, but taking a few minutes in the morning has done wonders for me.

I've joked for a while that my main hobby is collecting hobbies, so am trying new stuff all the time, some of it sticks, some of it doesn't. The latest has been pickleball. After hating on it for years as an old people/bourgeoisie activity, I gave it a try with my dad a month or two ago, and then played again recently with a neighbor. It's surprisingly fun and you get a pretty good workout too, neither of which I had expected.

I've also been recently dabbling a bit in knifemaking and sewing and gardening as well as shooting both guns and recurve bows, and don't consider exercising regularly a hobby but have returned to it after quite a long hiatus.

I’ve considered that option as well due to reduced recoil and cheaper/more available ammo. I looked at a Bear Creek uppers and the reviews were mixed. Lots of people with feed issues.

My wife helped talk me in to finally buying a DSLR camera last year (only been looking at them for years). I picked up a used one and dabbled throughout the year taking pictures of my boys doing sports. I've been trying to learn how to manually control and manipulate exposure. And then, edit the photo. A step complicated by my partial colorblindness.

I keep reading and learning and I've got to say it is a blast and an art form. Here is a one I managed to snap early yesterday.

How far into the knifemaking rabbit hole are you? i got into that for a little while too. havent had time lately.

I think thats probably a lot to do with BCA, more than the cartridge size
