Thinking about building a one stick...

After talking to a couple people on here and watching some videos, I’ve been thinking about trying one sticking.

I was curious what features some of you like and must have on your one stick.

cam cleat? Cam strap? Stick length? Single or double step aider? Do you rappel? If so, what do you prefer to use to do so?

I hope everyone has a great new year.

Do it.

I cut an API to 16”. There on DanO standoffs and a scout and a cam cleat off Amazon. Had the rope laying around. Bought the aider on here. It’s nice!

I’ve used this one all season and I really like it. API drilled out and DanO parts. I was planning to run a couple squirrel steps on each side but I haven’t felt the need.

Cam cleat is really convenient. I prefer my platform on the bottom and the short stick. Made the 2 step aider out of amsteel.

I do rappel and really like it. Easiest way to get started is just buy the kit from DanO. I’ll likely be using this same setup next year.

I like a longer stick (20" stick with 18" between steps). I also prefer a one-step, nylon webbing aider. I've tried the two-step aider, but don't like the wobbly feeling I get when I put my weight on the bottom step. With a one-step aider, I feel much more solid and not nearly as likely to kick out. Also, a cam cleat is a must. I wouldn't one stick without it. I have a Barton "K Cam Midi" cam cleat. It is one inch wide, so it fits on my stick perfectly. It has a 230 kg (507 lb) holding weight (compare to 300 lbs for the mid size Schaefer and standard Harken cam cleats). I also climb using a Kong KISA energy absorber on my tether in case of a fall with slack in the tether. I started this thread on the KISA a while back.

I haven't tried rappelling yet, but I'm considering it. Almost forgot, I just started using a straight OOAL Scout platform on the top of the stick. It's great for hunting, and I love the feel of standing on it while I'm moving my tether up. However, it adds a good bit of weight to the stick and makes it a bit more unwieldy when moving the stick.

Im not sure I understand how the Kisa works? I’ve always been attached with a friction hitch of some sort, or now, a roll n lock backed by a friction hitch. Does this Kisa play all these rolls some how?

The KISA replaces the friction hitch. It holds your weight even if you bounce around, but in a fall, it allows around 20" of rope to slide through to absorb the shock of your fall. This video shows the KISA being tested. It's not in English, but at about the 1:05 mark, you can see the KISA in action in slow motion.

@Boog thanks! Great post, lots of good info in that post. Will be looking into the KISA

What size rope for rappel is preferred? And what gadget do you prefer to rappel with?

A lot of people run 40 foot of Oplux and a Safeguard. Note: the safeguard is rated for 9mm like Canyon C-IV, but plenty are running with 8mm Oplux.

8mm ropes include: Oplux, Resc Tec, Canyonlux.

Rappel devices include: safeguard, lifeguard, grigri, birdie. Good thread on a few of these.

Of course you can also run ATC + autoblock as well for just rappelling.

Mschmeiske I have both oplux and cIV. To be honest I prefer the CIV more. It is in spec of the safegaurd, it’s better in wet/icy conditions, it seems to hold up to abrasion better and for me it doesn’t seem to snag on bark as often. Only downside is it doesn’t pack up as small. 40’ still fits in one of those cheap military dump pouches so it’s not bad.

If I didn’t pick up a safegaurd for SRTing then I would have just stick to my grivel 2x8 and an autoblock. Quieter, lighter, and more compact.

FYI looks like OOAL might be coming out with a “pre-built” 1-stick.

Right now the shikars are on sale. Both fixed and regular. Like $83. I wish the scout was too. Probably will be eventually. He always has sales.

Why would you prefer a shorter or longer stick? I was considering 20” total and 18” step spacing, but I see some use 12-15” sticks often it seems.

I cut down a Lone Wolf stick during the summer and have used it for one-sticking all season.

Cut down LW stick - 15” end to end

Replaced the top step with an angled scout from @DanO

Replaced the bottom step with a double step with a 3 step webbing Aider from@DanO

Replaced the LW brackets with a set of @DanO standoffs (this is a great combo with the Scout on a stick)

Stealth Stripped the stick

Added an aluminum Versa Button from @DanO

Was using a 6’ daisy chain webbing until recently. For me, since I wasn’t using a cam cleat it was easier to set/reset using the original strap with the buckle.

41’ foot of Resc Tech Rope
MadRock Safeguard

I use a diy 12" stick with a cam cleat and 3 step amsteel aider. It has LW standoffs and I used 1" aluminum flat stock as the double steps. Wrapped it in camo vet tape, it's a small light weight package.

I just made another and used Dan-O s standoffs and his slotted doublestep with a 2 step aider as a bottom step and welded up an aluminum "scout" platform for the top. It's a touch heavier and more cumbersome than my first so I'll have to test it out and see if I like the platform more than I dislike the weight/packability penalty.

I strictly rappelled the last two years with Oplux and an ATC/autoblock combination but am going to try a Safeguard this year, preferably with 9mm Canyon IV just to simplify the end of the hunt procedure to get down.

That was my next question, if y’all could share rappel set ups with me! I’m trying to add up cost on things. Any videos on the stuff are welcome too.

I used both the atc with autoblock and now have a safeguard. I like the safeguard but honestly I liked the atc with autoblock. The autoblock takes another few minutes to set up and rappel but it’s not a big deal at all.
I now use my safeguard as a distel hitch from my rappel line. I don’t use a tether.my 35’ rappel line is my tether. I just coil up and shove the excess in my pack hanging as I’m hunting.
