TURKEY TURKEY TURKEY

To be honest with you, unless I have a bird roosted and I’m very familiar with him I never know ahead of time where I’m going to set up.

But if the weather is warm I would be wandering those bottoms by 9:30....

Finally! He and the hen dropped quiet 3 yrds on the other side of pine the blinds tucked in. He spit and drummed nearly 20 mins. Before she cleared the tree and he followed. 24 1/2 #'s, 9 in beard, 1 in spurs. Now it's time for the bow until the end of month.

Thanks!
This has been a tough season until now. Rain every single day since May 1. A major rooky miss last week. And birds that have been pressured big time. I would bet that public land birds are less pressured than the birds on this hill of ALL hunters. I apparently don't know how to post a pic from my phone here. The tablet pics show up. One good thing about a long wait, they gain weight. Usually I'm tagged out the first week of May

Bow or crossbow only. I use Magnus Bullhead broadheads and my Radrover fat tire e-bike. I use a Double Bull blind when using the bow and run and gun using the crossbow. It's a blast hunting them with a bow or crossbow.

We!l because I took the pics of blind set with my tablet I can show you that and view when I shot..I'll have to figure out how to get his pic from my phone. Let me tell you peeking at him through this pine for 20 min. In full display pacing back and forth had me shaking by the time he finally showed up. Plus the hen came in under the branches ,making me duck down. A fun hunt

Well had one gobbling on the roost and on the ground answering me and the crows and got him to come to the field and then come 180 yards across the field to my decoys where I proceeded to MISS at 25 yards. He put on a show whole way in and ripped a good one 75 yards out but I just got too excited I guess and forgot to aim at base of neck and missed high. Rookie Bumped another with a hen a couple hours later - I had just called before I started walking and he didn’t answer but then boom there he was. Need some good mojo boys.

I feel ya. I'm still a virgin turkey shooter after six years of moderately trying. I actually shot at my first bird ever this year, but missed high also. Had two other chances that I blew with poor movement timing. Best season of talking and encounters ever though. Some day it will all come together for me.

Missing is nothing to be down about. It s about the hunt. And judging by what I read you guys are getting on birds and they are cooperating. That alone is a success!!!! Much like deer the real work begins after he hits the ground.

Also hunting field birds can be exhilarating and a punishment at the same time. You get to see him which is cool but you also see him and more times than not get overly excited and forget fundamentals like cheek on stock :)

The rookie mistake I made the week before I got my bird was a high right shot. I was in my raised blind and the first bird gobbled 20 yrds away off the roost. There were two other toms down the hill sounding off. I had my decoys, 2 hens and a jake with real turkey wings and last years tom fan half spread. The first tom dropped and stayed out of range and avoided the set. As I tried calling him in I didnt notice the other 2 toms running in on me from behind. They run under the blind as I stuck the gun out the window. About then I hear putt!, putt! I couldn't see them until the one ran out from under my barrel. Not considering how tight the pattern would be at 3 yrds I shot. He turned and flew right at the blind, barely clearing it. I didn't think they could lift that fast.
That tiny ball of pellets just missed his head.

Walked 9.5 miles today, and had a blast. I was on horse and bike trails all morning, but didn't see anyone till 10am. I talked to a group of 8 bikers, and shared that I hadn't had a gobble all day. About 100 yrds down the trail I heard the thunder! I looked around and there was a shirtless runner at the trail intersection trail map just staring at me.... I hopped off the trail 75 yrds and it hooked it's way around some thick stuff. All I had was a 4" tree to sit against in a dense poplar grove, but there was so much brush around I was good to go. With a few yelps to coax him in the last bit, I soon heard him spitting and drumming. He strutted his way into a small window in the saplings, and I laid him down. Only 1.5 miles back to the car, and the extra weight was worth it. I can't wait to cook this thing up.

This turkey season was awesome. So glad I was able to guide my buddies Justin and Ben for their first birds last weekend! Now they'll have to pass it on next year :)

Hunting seasons have been good to you recently!! congratulations! My maiden season ended up with only three hunts. I had an epic one today and certainly learned a lot in a short amount of time. I’m fortunate that I have some land with a lot of turkeys so I’m feeling optimistic for next year

That didn't take long, another tom moved in on those hen. I checked the cams again last night and they have switched to a mid/ late morning stroll past the area of the blind. I know where they roost, the nesting is on neighbors, the seasonal "pond" is 40 yards right across the plot in line with the blind. The set pretty much covers it all. I'll be out tomorrow. Today is another heavy rain and wind.
