What's the easiest way to read a book in a tree in a saddle?

I personally don't carry anything that would temp me to do anything other than pay attention to my surroundings. It is so easy for a deer to slip in and be right on top of your position even when you are paying attention. The only reason I carry a cell phone with me is as a safety device that doubles as a camera. I mute it and it stays in my pocket.

I see both sides of this one. Reading is a good thing, and passing long stretches of hang time is helped by using my Kindle. I think it also helps keep me more still and less fidgety.

That said, the awareness point is a good one. I also think my middle aged eyes struggle to adjust from long stretches of reading close up text, to further and more complex images of the deer woods. Not really a focus issue, but rather a general awareness or responsiveness. When I don't read I notice the slightest movement immediately.

I just do not understand and honestly feel sorry for folks that need to carry alternate entertainment into the woods while they hunt. There is so much to see and learn all around us in creation and have never left the woods bored.

I've got to give you props. Your brain is wired differently than mine if you can sit sun up to sun down without ever looking at your phone or reading anything. I love being in the woods and hunting, and for me the ability to relax and read a few pages here and there keeps me out longer and helps keep me still and not fidgeting. And I definitely love nature watching with my binos while I'm out there too. :)

I think a Kindle is the best option and is what I do the majority of my reading on day to day.

I picked up this case for use while hunting so I can clip it to my tether or gear strap:

Sounds like you don't read in the woods. Thanks for your input.

It's the way I was taught to hunt. Of course that was pre smart phone, kindle or table. Actually just shortly after we moved away from stone tablets. LOL

Glad OP asked the question. Not interested for me because I always try to be heads up in the woods. However, I am interested for my children. Thought bringing a book might help my daughter sit still when we went out the other day. She ended up accidentally forgetting it when we left the house, but it got me thinking about an alternative to movement associated with flipping pages. Kindle is a good suggestion. Thank you.

This was my daughter during last weekend's youth hunt. Minimal motion, keeps her engaged with something instead of looking around constantly (she moves her head way too quickly!). We had a doe come in at the last minute, it was simple for her to set her kindle down slowly in her lap and get on the gun. She didn't get a shot unfortunately due to brush and trees, but next year I'll have her in a tree! Would have been a dead deer from a tree.

Didn't consider this, but great thought though!

Sounds like a way to let deer walk by to me, I already feel like I look down at the phone too much instead of scanning the woods, but the kindle/e-reader with one of those "paper" screens is likely the best option for actual reading/stealth

Speaking of "didnt consider" I just had a thought that might kill 2 birds with 1 stone. If you have the inatuaralist app or similar where you can take a pic for plant ID, snap pics of stuff on the way in that you notice browse sign on or around that you arent sure what it is and once in the tree, run the id and read up on those things. Obviously wouldnt work going in before daylight but otherwise might have some benefit, esp when deer arent heavily focused on mast. I usually snap the pic and/or look that stuff up later once I am out of the woods but could be done in the tree if you have service.
