Which states dont allow screw in steps?

“Tree stands are allowed but must be a portable type and must be removed daily. Screw-in type steps are prohibited.”
Why not be helpful and link to the statute or document withthis language?

Indiana is a no on state and federal owned or leased lands. Our rules say that you can not penetrate the bark of a tree more than 1/2" . Stupid really because 1/2" is plenty deep enough to damage most tree species around here.

Where are you quoting that from? Here is a screen shot of the 2018/19 hunting regulations. I also called DNR this fall and asked that question specifically and was told they were legal as long as they were removed when you left.

Look at the regs for the WMAs

I called the DNR in regards to Frederick Watershed and Monacacy natural resource areas. They told me you can’t screw anything into the trees.

The reg does not mention treesteps in mentions treestands. Just inferring you cannot build a permanent stand.

A quick google search brought up these two:

Wmas and one specific national park are NOTgeneral public land regs.

They're regs for wmas and that park. They're not public land or state forest regs.

Lol...okay...and the two I called about then I guess. It says temporary stand. You can interpret that to mean no drilling, screwing or nailing into trees.

I will email them and post the response if I get one.

Do ya'll think this would be helpful. If so, I can finish it out. It would need to be accurate, otherwise could cause some major confusion.

My concern would be inaccurate data (see above).

Links to statute or relevant state regs would be king. At the end of the day as with all things hunting you need to do your research. I suspect most everywhere is "none" or "some" - so maybe map out where clear statewide "no penetration" statutes exist?

@mattsteg is correct. I am sure there are regulations specific to certain WMA's and park's that prohibit screw in steps for that area. However, there is no general regulation in MD that prohibits screw in steps on State owned land. The page that I posted above is the only mention of what is allowed/not allowed in the general hunting regulations and I have read every word of both the print and on line versions. Like I mentioned above, I also called MD DNR and asked this question specifically. Their answer was "screw in steps are allowed as long as they are removed when you leave".

With that said, I don't want anyone to take my word for it. Emailing DNR and keeping a copy of the response on your person would be a good idea in case a DNR officer tries to interpret the regs in a different manner.

NOT allowed in FL. So get it out of your head that you’re gonna come down here and whack one our pub land monsters

Will be on private land looking for a med size one not a monster after turkey season.I won a pig hunt at our bowhunters raffle so I'll be chasing little ones that eat better than the big one.

Illegal in Wisconsin. “It is illegal to...damage trees. Cutting shooting lanes and use of screw-in tree-stands or steps are considered damaging and are illegal on public lands;”

However, you can leave treestands up overnight north of Highway 64 if you’re into that sort of thing. :smirk:

That is only for state owned land. Does not apply to other public lands.
