So you’re saying federal land it’s fair game? Where are those regulations? I just assumed the DNR regulations went for all public land in the state.

I didn't say its fair game. Just different regulations. Federal land would be under a federal website. So if its the nicolet national forest, it would be here https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd479752.pdf

I hunt public in wisconsin where its legal to use screw in steps. Specifically says "...except that one-piece, heat-treated, tapered, commercially manufactured tree steps are permitted".

Very interesting. Thanks for the info! Although my wife doesn’t thank you because now I’m possibly in the market for bolts.

Hey guys, would the same go for using spurs

There are no general regulations that prohibit "puncturing" or "damaging" the tree that I have found. I assume that in the areas tree steps are allowed, spurs would be also. I plan on using spurs this coming year. But, with that said, quoting this post won't hold up in a court of law. :)

WV does not specifically prohibit them or gaffs. I have spoken directly to my land manager and as far as damages to trees which is prohibited it is at the land managers discretion for each different unit/region. Regulations allow for portable stands and personal property that can be left UP TO but not exceeding 48hrs on WMA and 24hrs on national forest unattended. Essentially if you desire to leave it up all season you just have to hunt there every other day however if you show up and someone is hunting in the location you cannot claim it as your hunting area and you can choose to hunt with them or find a new spot.

Georgia is a no go for screw in tree steps.

Bumping an old thread but I just moved here and can’t find anything saying they aren’t allowed.

in west virginia, screw in steps are illegal on public land

on the wmas, the law is written so that it is illegal to even reach out and snap a living briar branch in your way or purposefully break them over with your foot

I wonder what the fine or loss of privileges is for using stuff that screws into the tree or trimming limbs where prohibited? It was very difficult to find what punishment was applicable last time I searched it. Has anyone hear been fined for one or both of these things?

Just do it. Steps don't hurt the tree, and the odds of you getting caught are extremely low
