I will say that it has to be a super stiff steel wire that won't just bend on you or you lose half the benefit. Meaning, if the wire inside bends where you are girth hitched it'll be alit harder to open up the tether to advance up the tree.
If I didn't use footloops but just kept it basic and minimalist like gcr0003 and his gang I'd still put a wire in the tree hugging part to speed things up and make it less work to open and move the tether up.

I cant find your video right now, but you used spring steel in the end right? Do you remember what gauge?

I think I remembered from the video it was a wire from a flexible dryer vent or similar. But I could be wrong.

The only time I use a Linesman rope/belt is if I'm on spikes.

Currently running 9 mm C-IV for top tether and 9.5 mm Canyon tech foot tether, Longhorn Agile hitches tied with 6.8mm RIT 900. Performance has been pretty solid. Thinking about tying a soft sticht hitch out of this cord to see how I like that though.

I do a lot of rock/ice climbing, and like this concept, but really like the ease of getting down via rapping vs. downclimbing.

Yes. Reverse the process when coming down.

Do you think steel cable would work? Fairly stiff for its diameter and has low memory. A small piece of heat shrink on the ends of the cable might help prevent poking through the sheath. Maybe the vinyl coated cable would be better for not poking through?
