Wild edge stepp lovers

True story.

In all seriousness, I'd be 100% down with stepps if they didn't gouge the almighty crap out of every tree I put them on. I doubt Wild Edge wants me to send them the ticket when the river pirates debate their claim that they're "public land legal." The way our rules read here, anything that harms a tree is non-kosher, and the aftermath of a stepp climb can look pretty gruesome.

I can run away faster with a pocket full of bolts.

But they definitely pack way better than sticks if your dcnr hasn't signed the hippocratic oath

Same for me. I love them, but I can't shake the nagging feeling of harming the tree. I am sure that is a combination of my technique and the softer trees I end up climbing.

But I learned a lot of practicing and using stepps. I use short sticks with a knaider/swaider type thing. I also like having the handholds above, and the short sticks provide just enough of that to make using the swaider non-sketchy.

My primary method is a modified Cain using a knaider only. The knaider is modified as well. I also had a hard time unhooking so I cut off part of the hook. As far as them digging into the tree, I've packed the ends with JB weld so they don't core the bark. I use a kydex holster for 6 stepps which i carry in in my pack and attach to my saddle prior to accent. I don't use a linesman belt on the climb. I have a biner on the bridge that attaches to the stepp at my waist.
@boyne bowhunter has an excellent video with the carabiner portion of the above that still seems like a great method to me. No mention of knaider, but it's still worth watching. I've never tried stepps, but rewatching it today and it still seems like a valid method.

Get rid of the bag and get a kydex holster. Easy to deploy and easy to reload when your coming down. I got mine from someone on Saddlehunter. Not sure who it was.
The OG thread on it, but many videos and pictures are gone now:

Here was a guy that was selling a kydex holster, but he's not been on the site for nearly a year:

And here is a video, maybe the one in the original thread, no idea:

Definitely an easy and safe way to climb the tree. I have to admit though I haven't used them in a couple of years. For me they're a bit cumbersome, not going up but going down. Even rappelling I hated untying and storing each on the way down. I also hunt fairly high pressured public and I felt like the marks I left on the tree when using them was like sign posts for other hunters that says "this must be a good spot someone else sat here".

Tried the loop technique for installing the steps for the first time this morning. Holy cow! That’s the only way to do it!

new wild edge user. This seem so much quicker than what I have been doing. The knaider/swaider has its learning curve as well. Glad I stumbled into this.

After reading all these, there should be a surge in sales @ W.E. I've bought them twice in the past and hated them. I just got a bag of 10 and hunted this yr from them and I gotta say I'm liking them, especially for a ROS. I put 2 a little higher than my top step to the sides and have way more surface to foot area than w/steps. Even w/the noisy, hateful, bag they still beat sticks for climbing, JMO.

I think this forum coined the term “saddle hunter effect” haha

I tend to forget about that because it has become so engrained in my technique but the 2 biggest game changers in my climbing method were @boyne bowhunter's video on that knot and the invention of the knaider.

Where I am having a little trouble, is the placement of the knaider/swaider on the wild edge rung. Any advice?

I'm righty and put it on my right leg. I just raise my leg up to get it on the right side of the rung. Sometimes I'll let it settle against the right side, sometimes it settles in the middle. It depends on how straight the stepp is on. Usually I slowly put weight onto the knaider to make sure it doesn't slide and let it settle where it wants to if it does.

Do yall put any tape or JB weld on the rung to keep it from sliding? Also I have seen some replace the carabiner with a hook from a racket strap. I current have a hook on mine but may switch back to a carabiner.

I electric taped a couple big spots on the bar on a few for testing. I haven’t noticed any issues with or without the tape. I’m only climbing with a 3 step etrier. I’ve used just a hook but recently switched to a carabiner. The hook is easier to get on and off. But for the most part once the carabiner is locked there’s nothing to worry about.

I am working my way back to a something similar to 5 WE Stepps with knaider. What are folks doing for the last step where there is no handhold?

I started using wild edge stepps in 2017 in some form or another. I've tinkered with some other stuff in the meantime but nothing has replaced them. Since the knaider came out I've used them with a knaider. 7 stepps and a knaider and I'm up at least 20 feet. I don't think there is a much safer method because I always have something up above me to help pull myself up. Once you get comfortable with putting them on they go on really easy. Once in a while they may shift a little bit but they're never coming off. I think they are the best compromise between safe, packable and weight. I've tried a lot of sticks and sticks really don't compare in the packable department. I can go up the tree fast if I want, but more importantly I can sneak up the tree quietly without a ton of movement with them.

So share your love of stepps here. Whether you use the wild edge aider, knaider or just use them as they are. ( I don't support the knaider/swaider combo fyi!!!)

Red, what do you do for a platform/ROS?
I want to love my WE Stepps, but haven't quite fallen in love with them like you have. I'm getting there.

I use a set of 5 golden buck steps or squirrel steps on a strap with an OCB.

@redsquirrel are you still using the stock ropes that come with the steps or have you changed them out to something different?
Stock ropes. We got Andrew to make a set of ropes that was weaved a little tighter way back when so those on one of my sets but the rest have just the standard ropes.

Local guy selling 7 primal steps with the wild edge rope mod and 3d printed holder for $60. Are the primal gonna hold me at 200? Tempted to grab these, and play around with CAin, knaider only, or @Hall17 method, i already have a 5 step black diamond etrier and am reasonably proficient with it. Do you do the 2 zipties and carabiner, or use a hook of some sort? interested in where guys land with safety: knaider only, Cain, modified, Cain, 5 step etrier. (Sounds there is alignment that knaider/swaider or etrier is sketchiest.
