Climbing spikes

Has anybody slipped and had the lineman belt catch them? The ones I tried as a kid were for telephone poles(short spikes) and no lineman belt. I was trying to climb a big oak I couldnt get my arms around. Id get about 3 steps up and slide to the ground. My dad could run up a tree like it was nothing. He ended up getting a real tree pair with big old spikes, I never tried them.

I had a climbing stick spin on me last year, linesman belt pinned me to the tree. It took most of the skin off of my knuckles, but kept me from falling about 15 feet.

I started using my spurs this year a lot. I had just gotten them at the end of last year. Like others have said they are awesome as far as how fast you can get up a tree. I have had an occasional single spur gaff out....which was never really an issue. However, this past tuesday I went in just after it stopped raining and got in close to some bedding. I was trying to be too quiet going up the tree and not pushing in my spurs...just letting my weight set the spur. I was also in a harder bark tree then i normally climb...you can usually tell right away the type of tree such as soft or hard. Im not sure what kind of tree it was though. Any way I was about 18 feet up and went to flip my line up when both spurs let go. My hands were on the linesman belt....and I slid down the tree about 8 feet or so before the line caught the tree.

Man that got the heart rate going. I use the 11mm rope that you can get at rei by the foot. The rope did stop me from going all the way down. One thing that was interesting is since my body was held to the tree as I slid down...it was kind of a controlled fall. It didnt even hurt when I came to a stop. Popped both spurs in, harder this time, and started climbing again with no more issues. Got a few minor scrapes on my knees and knuckles...

I really think this was just my fault for trying to be a little too quiet. Ive always been a little worried if the the linesman rope would actually prevent a full fall. In this case it did. I will still use them for sure...as I believe it was user error. Just practice and become comfortable with them..but dont become complacent.

By the way, this was a pretty big tree it was larger than 20" around at the base farily rough bark. Not an oak.......but just narrow enough at 25 foot to hang my stand. One thing I do when I get to hunting height and before I set my stand is to clip into my tree tether anc then set my stand. I repel down too.

I just got my spurs the other day and I will say that practice is going to be the key here. Just saying that its not something you want to buy monday and attempt to hunt tuesday. Practice, practice!!

I hesitated too long today and someone bought the set offered in classifieds earlier.

Why not, I did! figured if I was gonna use em I might as well jump in. Climbed 5', then 10' and the third climb I was hunting haha. I don't recommend this really. Lol

There ya go!!! Try these in conjunction with your spurs and you have essentially morphed into a catlike saddle ninja!!!

Ha, I do hunt from a saddle... a lot... I have an aero hunter and guidos web. But I use them like tools...use the right one for the job at hand. :). I do tend to use a hang on when its really cold and need to wear a lot of layers or the IWOM.

Got ya. I wondered as I was hunting in 1 degree Weather yesterday how a sling would work with all the insulated clothes. (I tried an IWOM last month in 15 degree weather but found I didn't stay as warm as I do in my bibs and coat. My feet may have stayed warmer however)

What bibs and coat do you have? Ive found the IWOM to be me warmest setup so far....compared to dayone wool parka and bibs which was my 2nd warmest...still testing out the sitka incinerator suit. I actually bought the sitka set hoping it might work well with the aero hunter. I tried it once and it was ok...but It was a little noisy in the saddle. I just bought a sit drag sling to try as well. All ive done so far is sew up the sit drag ends for stiffer carabiner connections. Im guessing if the sling is comfortable it will be a better option for bulky clothing...but I will still be using a RC harness along with the sit drag

Game Hide I got from Farm and Fleet. I think it was $200 for the set. I only wish it had an integrated hood. There were a lot of things I liked about the IWOM but many I didn't. (Ever try to use the pee hole. Lol) anyway, we should start a new thread for this subject. This one is about climbing spikes, (I think. Lol)

Lol thats why your the man!!

This is true.

If you go back and read some of the threads from last summer, you'll see that I went through the complete range of emotions about spurs.

Before purchase: "Spurs look awesome, I need to try these".
After purchase: "These are so LIGHT! It's going to revolutionize my hunting!!!"
After first use: "Holy sh!t these things suck! I'm going to kill myself. People that use them are NUTS! Who wants to buy my spurs?"
After 4,5,6 uses: "Wow these are really nice and work pretty well once you get the hang of it."
Now: "I love my spurs and will ALWAYS use them unless it's illegal. And even then, I may use them if there's a low likelihood of getting caught." jknr

I'm in between 1st use an 4 uses.... but I'm going to keep trying...one minute I love them and the second minute, I'M GONNA DIE!!!!!!
