Live from the tree 2017 version

Quiet afternoon hunt. Had two doe come in and browse behind me at last light. Had to wait a solid fifteen minutes for them to leave and by then it was full dark, though we had an exceptionally bright 3/4 moon. Made my way through the woods and got to the edge of the beam field and could clearly see 3 deer feeding 30-40 yards off. Went back into the woods a few feet and rattled some brush and stomped some leaves which got them moving, but only a little ways away. Snapped some twigs and threw them into the field to get them out. I hate doing that, but couldn’t wait around for them to leave. On the plus side I don’t think they knew what I was or winded me.

Although I always try not to spook deer on a departure I have needed to do it once and awhile. I'd rather scare them naturally then having them know it's a human, so I carry a small coyote call and do a short call.

That’s a good idea. I’ve got an open reed yote call I could carry with me.

I've barked. I've also blew at them like they do and sometimes it will clear the field and other times they will look up and start back eating. I've also sat there in the stand for another hour waiting for them to leave.

Morning sit, spooked at least one walking in, nothing after :(

Quick hunt at the end of the road. Sitting in the Y of a hickory tree.

Had 2 small bucks sparring in the slough behind me for about 30 min. That was fun to watch.

One of them tried to walk out in it and buried up to his knees.

Had a little Y walk under me tonight. First buck sighting of the season. He came out and hit a scrape and was checking out some other rubs as well. Then I hard a barred owl land 10 yards from me checking me out. And he was making some noise at me too which was quite a hoot at that distance! :D

Really cool. We don’t see them too often in where I hunt but “up north” in Michigan you hear them all the time. If you break out and call to them at night you’ll get them hooting and calling like crazy. I hunted up there a few years ago and as day broke I had a great barred owl staring at me from a topped tree about 15 yards away.

My first year in a tree stand, two screech owls circled me a few times. They landed about 6 feet away and watched me for 5 min. When they left, they screeched all the way.

On my second hunt ( no tree) I was walking back just before dark through a field, when something large flew 3 feet over my head. It was an owl flying a grid ove the field. I stood and watched while he worked the field. He didn't mind me there.

Plenty of them in the swamps. They fly so silent. It's amazing. Watched them eat crawfish from the water for hours. Dip down and pounce on one. Fly back to perch and eat then repeat.
Had a crow squawking one time right at dark and out of no where like a stealth bomber, an own knocked him off his perch. Also had many swoop at top water baits while bass fishing.

I enjoy watching Hawks and cats hunt. I've had owls close but I've never seen them actually getting anything yet. Watching Hawks dive and swoop up moles and mice I have a real respect for them. I'm glad they aren't big enough to come after people. Watching bobcats stalk is amazing. I wish I had the patience they do. I watched one two years ago hide in cattails and wait over two hours without any movement that I could see for a rabbit. When one happened by they both took off in a case that lead out of sight. I'm not sure if the cat got it but it was really amazing to watch.

A few years ago when my oldest son was about 12 or 13 we were hunting in a stand together and had some corn scattered on the ground. There were several birds hopping around on the ground eating the corn. Out of nowhere a bobcat pounced on one. The area where the corn was scattered was a 20-30 yard open area with no brush. We were both watching the birds when it pounced on one. How it stalked across that area without us or the birds seeing it I have no idea. It moved back into the brush and we watched it eat the bird, then the next thing we both new it was gone. We never saw it leave. It was a really cool experience that still amazes me when I think about it.

YES! They are thick in the swamps.

When I was hunting last week I was totally surrounded by them and they were LOUD. First time I had that many around me. It was very cool.
