Live from the tree!

I wasn't able to get out for our bear hunt, but in one week they killed almost 600 bears. All 6 days were archery and the last 3 included muzzleloader.

We have a serious bear problem.
How much are out-of-state tags for Black Bear up there?

You would have to buy a non res bow or firearm license which will run you about $130. But the actual bear tag is $2 because its a management hunt.

Bear-a-palooza?!?!?!
LOL. We can definitely do that! We'd have to find a campground cause I'm sure my wife would freak out if we had everybody here, but that's no big deal. One of the problems I have with bear hunting is finding enough guys to help get one out of the woods. I was considering learning to quarter for next year.

Edited to add:

For reference, we don't have normal sized bears around here. I routinely see 300 pound bears, and over the past few years I know of at least 2 800+ pounders killed. The first one they had to use a bucket loader to get him out, they're lucky they were on private land.

OK, what's the timeline on this hunt? New Jersey, right? And Sundays are no hunt days?

So it would be around the second week of October. Its a 6 day hunt, Monday through Saturday. All 6 days are archery, the last 3 are also muzzleloader. Deer hunting is open while you are bow hunting also. We do have bow hunting for deer on Sundays but that's it.

This was the first year they had the October portion of the hunt with archery. I'm assuming it will continue, especially because it was so successful. I have not read our game laws recently to see how long the hunt was approved for. They do have some funny rules. You can bait the bears, but you can't hunt within 350 feet of bait while you're in a tree. You can sit on the bait pile on the ground though.

Hit me up for tracking and/or dragging. I haven't hunted bear due to the pain of getting one out of the woods, and not sure how good eating they would be. I'll be ready with my 0.75 oz bear spray.

LOL.

I appreciate the offer! If you decide you want to hunt them too we can get together and kill some bears. I really want to thin the population, but they are just so much work. The more guys we can get the easier it will be.

I am in. Hunting, dragging, whatever. I hunt deer zone 13, so am somewhat familiar with that area. And work in Warren, NJ. And I pay the out of state archery and firearms license, so an extra couple of dollars for a bear tag would be fine. The only negative is the property I hunt is deer only. I couldn't shoot a bear unless it was trying to eat me.

Have 0.75 oz bear spray, will travel.

Sounds good! I hunt all over. I hunt zone 13 also but its park land so only deer. I shot my bear in deer zone 6, but I have lots of spots all over NW jersey where I know bears come through so I'm pretty sure I could get us on some.

BTW I have 2 good friends from college from Warren. They don't live there now though.

Red,
We do the gutless method on bears in Colorado. You skin them on the ground and either quarter or bone, one side at a time. Put meat in game bag and haul out on your pack with hide and skull. FYI if you have never skinned a bear they look like a human with there skin off, freaky. I advise against gutting them as there is no need to. You don't want to see what's inside them. I love bear meat, it is some of the best game I've eaten. I've heard ones shot over bait depend on what they baited with as to taste of meat, but I personally don't know. The amount of meat on a bear is surprisingly small for their size, mostly belly.

I've been looking into the gutless method for deer, so I will look into it for bear too. Thanks. I agree with you on bear meat. My bear was absolutely delicious. The steaks tasted just like pork chops to me. I have heard opinions all over the map on their taste, but that was my experience.

You were not kidding man thats alot of bears!!!!

Definitely down to hunt some bears. We have a list of guys on a local forum here that offer their assistance when a hunter needs to drag or find a deer. We email out contact info to all that sign up. I helped me once when I had thought I lost the one in my avatar.

Bear pooloza would be cool theme.

Bear apooloza. I'll keep tabs on that status of the season and we'll bring it up again over the winter or spring.

I would be in for an archery bear hunt. If the stars aligned I would make the trip.

I finally made it into a tree. Took the Ken Sling and no knee pads. This was a short hunt so I was a leaner on my Cranford Deluxe steps.

Wind was crazy. Nothing moved. I didn't see any dear in the fields on the drive home either. But it finally cooled off enough that I would consider dragging a deer. Of course this means it is on!!!
