New Platform steps maybe ???

The boat buckle is marginal with Ameristeps for me. I can't imagine it working for these steps.

I completely agree. I'm not a fan of the single step climbing systems either.

I also don't think these would work with a boat buckle. With these steps, I believe a ratchet strap is a necessity for a platform.

Why do you say that? I was using a boat buckle but curious for your thoughts.

Oh ok. I’m gonna have to do a video. I get my boat buckle so tight.

Don't get me wrong, I used my boat buckle for 7 straight days in Illinois. It definitely works. But it doesn't get as rock solid as a ratchet. That's my only complaint.

Ill agree a boat buckle can get pretty tight but a ratchet will always get tighter because of the mechanics of the device where a boat imho is more based on how much force one can generate to cam it over. If you look @Boudreaux photos the difference between these and ameristeps is that little extra attachment peice where the straps go through.

Because its a hair higher on the ameristeps vs flush with these steps is all the difference. Its a small design detail but it is what provides the stability when attached. Ameristeps do move but for me it’s usually a downward when pressure is applied to the step they do not appear to ever pull away from the tree the least bit. Any step will slightly move or flex downward when pressure is applied.

In conclusion I am waiting on what cranford develops for 2018. If not these would be great for a ratchet and may pick up a few just for presets which i could leave out throughout the season.

I think either would be ok but i think the 1 inch strap needs to be stii almost like denim or carhart material
Stiff or rigid. The ratchet im gonna use ive been practicing and testing it. And the frigin steps keep flipping and twisting its frustrating Any advice?

IMO based off my limited testing, the bullman outdoors steps just aren't great for a platform. With the boat buckle I can get strap on ameristeps tight so they don't pull away from the tree. Because these steps are designed where you stand on top, I could not get them tight enough where they don't pull away from the tree and start twisting.

In 2018 cranford is supposed to be coming out with a strap on platform option so you might want to hold out for that or look for the plastic ameristeps on the used market.

I didn't think they'd work well with the OCB. However, @Boudreaux said they'll work with a ratchet strap. I'd use them on presets. For mobile setups I'll only use the boat buckle. It's completely silent and works great with 2-3 Ameristeps.

Yep I figure I'll use my set to do a couple of presets with a ratchet strap

I tried them with both OCB and ratchet, yes they will work, but they still have movement which for me is undesirable at best. Last thing I want is for my stepping on a step to make noise as it shifts or drop a piece of loose bark. Sadly, it is all we have currently available. Today, if I was goign to purchase steps to walk around a tree I would opt for the Jim Stepp as they have much larger foot surface and once set properly are not going to move every time you step on them. CON for Stepps are that they take longer to set and are heavier/more bulky. PRo is no ratcher strap required - quieter to install

Should i get plastic or aluminum ameristeps for platform?

I did some testing with these this morning and they work great for climbing as they are intended! I only have 6 and I was fooling around with them with my aider, but they are very solid to stand on.
