Off season plans

So far my off season has derailed. The business has picked up sooner than normal this year so I come home from work to see the kids and then go to work for myself for another six to eight hours. Everytime I have time to go scouting we get another snow storm. I fell on the ice a few weeks ago and screwed up something in my hip, finally made it to the doctors and going to get x-rays tomorrow.
On a good note I have a lead that might help me get permission on another boarding property which is where the main bedding area is. So hopefully that works out and I can get into where I've wanted to hunt for years.

Busy working during the week. Fortunate though to spend at least one day every weekend working on fun stuff - scouting for beds, marking stand sites, clearing shooting lanes, on public. On my private lands I have been hinge cutting, and taking soil samples, planning. Funny, how the planning, and preparation can be as much exciting as the hunt.

I enjoy scouting at least as much as I do actually hunting :D

Spent my days off this week in the back yard. Had contractors in to replace the fence, and then came in after a tilled garden beds against it, amended, and planted. I'm a bit sunburned, and I picked the worst day to transplant tall tomato seedlings. (20-30 mph sustained wind speeds with gusts up to 40mph) The tallest seedling is 33 inches tall AFTER cutting the bottom 3 leaf clusters and planting the root ball deep enough the ground level come close to the fourth leaf.

The tallest seedling, all my "black Vernissage" were very tall.

That is a serious fence.

I haven't been in the woods since pigmageddon. Fishing has come on strong this year for me.
Tried that senko Thursday. Had one on and he escaped before getting to the boat. I think it's going to be a great tool but I need to practice with it more.

Killed it last night with a 5.25" weighted weedless swimbait. Top 5 fish combined for 97", the biggest was 20.75in 4.74lbs. Not to shabby for Michigan.

Nice! What body of water is that? I pulled up a 20.5" largemouth from an inland lake in Lewiston last summer. A buddy and I fished the Black River near port huron and pulled up a few rock bass and a couple of pike just last weekend. Fun getting on the fish again!

Come over to battle Creek and I'll hook you up, but my buddies would kill me if I put that on the net.

Haha.. almost forgot how fisherman are about their "spots" lol. I blame it on not being able to ice fish at all this year!!

The fishing has been really crappy here the last couple weeks. The dinks are around - but even they're not acting very hungry. I think the cold front we had in mid-march really messed them up. Hopefully it picks up soon.

Our spring crappie season did the same thing down here.

I have been skunked for the season so far.

@flinginairos what too good to tag a brother that was with you?! we did have a great outing. I scouted this area for turkeys in the morning then was invited fishing and had to oblidge. I ended up with 2 LMB 14.5" and 13.5" a 11.25" crappie and several gill over 8". I am very much looking forward to another trip. I was drifting a nightcrawler about 11, while casting a 1/2oz jig&pig ... awesome way to spend the day.

I have been scouting lots already. I have 4 cameras out 4 of which are on public land. this year I am only scouting natural trails that I found while walking the land. no attractants at all and im hoping to get lucky. there is just a crazy allure of hunting public land deer that keeps me coming back for more even when I don't get bucks. I started hunting way too early last season, I am hoping I can be patient and not wear myself down this season like last and I can really spend some time in the woods during prime time. Gonna attempt some self filming again this season as well so im reviewing some budget friendly camera options and tweaking my packing setup.

Got a good stringer of gills from the yak this morning. Been a long time since I've targeted just bluegills but it was a blast!

Haha sorry man!

I'm excited to see how you do up there this year. If you need a scouting partner sometime holler at me!
