Not sure how tall you are but I would think most guys could easily get 4 foot to first step (aider at 2 foot, step at 4 foot)? With that, and if you use aider to get 2 foot and then step into platform you should be able to hit 20 foot with 4 steps and your platform (or steps)
I'm not following red's method as written. I have tweaked it to what works best for me.
(After multiple edits) Here is my method:
1.) Install stepp above head. I tie the knot at head height, move the stepp up the tree, adjust tension, and set.
2.) Install second stepp is at chest level.
3.) Wrap tether around the tree above the highest stepp. This also keeps my tether in place. I keep a triangular screw link in my pack when I need to go around a lot of branches. I put this on at the base of tree as needed.
4.) Place foot in ascender loop at comfortable height. Ensure enough slack in lineman belt before making move. With one hand on top Stepp and other hand on tether rope tag, advance the ascender while raising your leg to max.
5.) Step onto chest high stepp. Cinch linemans belt.
6.) Adjust height of top step to head/chest height depending on clothing
7.) Repeat Steps 3-4
8.) Step onto highest step. Cinch linemans belt
9.) Set next step at head height.
10.) Repeat steps 7-9.
Depending on step placement this a 4 to 5 feet per move on average, so 6 steps gets you 24-30 feet.
As for coming down, I find that easier. Just use the aider to get low enough to get a hold of the stepp. Cinch the linemans belt, remove the stepp, and repeat.
Sorry for the edits. My mind isn't working right and blizzards and touchscreens don't play nice together. Wish the deer were moving better.
