The red squirrel climbing aider

Wow that is serious two stick and an aider and your at fourteen feet , I like to get up there a bit for whitetail. I hunt pressured ground in New Jersey. Im excited to try this out , do you like the wild edge over the climbing sticks for mobility? Or does it depend on where your hunting, and how far in you have to go?

Right now I have been going back and forth between them. I used the stepps most of the season and I've been tinkering with sticks again the last month. Everything has is pluses and minuses.

Same here. Back and forth. I love how the stepps fit right into my backpack. Platform and clothing strapped to the pack, bow in hand, and one free hand for maneuvering.

This is what I have been interested in, as far as transport , and what your finding works better

So I mentioned a while ago that I left my WE stepps and platform in the a tree. I shot a doe and hopped down instead of using the aider... all good but I left the aider up at platform level. Lol. So today I hopped on the quad and took a ride to the tree to grab my stuff. I used my tether w ropeman and a webbing aider in the biner and use the RedSquirrel method. It was really nice and easy! Great idea @redsquirrel

I've been putting off diving into this thread because it's so long. I was waiting for the movie to come out. I hadn't planed on climbing the WE Stepps but it seems more and more guys like the Stepps and they may be easier to carry into some of the thick nasty stuff I intend to hunt this fall. So...here goes.

The aider system(s) transform the stepp ladders to a viable solution for many hunters.

This was the bag: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NTS3REQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I wasn't optimistic about it when the dump pouch portion of it came off while I was rigging it up. But I finished ripping it off and it will be better that way. I replaced all the metal zipper pulls with paracord. The inside is pretty durable and it slings very nicely over my shoulder so it should work pretty good.

I just use strap on steps. There is a set of aluminum steps in the bottom.

How do you grab your Stepps out of the bag on the way up if it's on your back? Do you drop them on the way down and pack later or repack as you remove them?

I've just been using the actual bag from wild edge lately, I haven't found anything that works better. But the bag that you quoted hangs over your shoulder to your side, so I would just pack them up as I remove them.

very true!

FWIW, I have only had an aider kick out on me 1 time ever.. and that was with the aider off to the side. It seems like the aider inline with the tree is more secure to me. Though it may just be mental, it has proven to be true thus far.

I have 14 or 15 of the steps and I plan on leaving them on the tree for some preset setups in the coming year. I am thinking i'll leave the top ones up and then just hide the bottom few or something like that.

(they would only be sat out for a couple days as I would try to scout mid week and hunt that weekend.

I’m going to going to do the same thing

did a test run today with winter gear and layers on and it was 65 degrees in Charlotte today. DRENCHED :sweat: So setting first stepp at nipple height for me is 4 1/2 ft. What I ran into that I didn't account for was after setting the tether as high as I could reach flat footed that the loop would pull down once my body weight was applying pressure to it so the amount of rope I had to slide the ropeman up was about 6 inches shorter than I planned. Standing on my toes and wiggling the rope higher I can just get enough clearance to step up onto that 4 1/2 ft stepp. I had to let a good bit of slack in the LB to do it, then cinch back up tight again to reset the tether up high. I ran 3 stepps a few times today and got to 13 1/2 ft so with 5 I can be at 22 1/2 - add 2 for the platform and I'm still down to 7 stepps. Suffice it to say was that significantly lighter. Even if I drop to 4 ft per stepp I'm still at 20 ft with same # of stepps. Real deal tomorrow and Thursday

Try a castration band on the loop of your tether. That'll keep it up snug to the tree and you won't get so much sagging when you load your tether.

I tried it. However, I found that using a long moveable foot loop attached to top steps of sticks, is far easier and stable, and it accomplishes the same thing. I have no problem getting to 20 foot with my three modified helium sticks (22 inch between steps) and 1 aider. I made a video talking about this system and plan on doing one soon showing me actually climbing with my system. Just need to find a dang photographer.

Bring your sticks and aider with you when you come to Wisconsin and I'll video you.
